Dabney Coleman, the character actor who delighted audiences in films like 9 to 5, Dragnet, The Muppets Take Manhattan, Tootsie, WarGames, Cloak & Dagger, You’ve Got Mail, and the TV shows The Guardian and Boardwalk Empire, has died at 92. The news leaked earlier today but has only just been confirmed by his daughter, Quincy Coleman. Often underappreciated in Hollywood’s vast populous of show-stopping performers, Dabney Coleman was a master of playing smarmy, selfish, hot-headed, and dick-ish characters with class and playfulness. Details about Coleman’s passing spread quietly on Twitter before getting confirmed by mainstream outlets, with many showing their love for Mr. Coleman’s rich body of work and unforgettable contributions to the entertainment industry.
Dabney Coleman made his Broadway debut in a brief run of A Call on Kuprin before setting up camp in the television space with roles in Kraft Suspense Theater’s The Threatening Eye and as Dr.

I was a kid just as the drive-in craze was coming to a close. I can recall packing into our giant boat of a Chrysler station wagon and trekking out to see some first-run movies with my family back in the early 80s. I vividly remember seeing The Muppets Take Manhattan, Superman III (which terrified young me to no end), and Return of the Jedi on the massive screens of the Starlight Drive-In that stood for decades after the projectors were shut down and the lot converted into a gigantic swap-meet. Unfortunately, I was far too young to take in the legendary exploitation fare of the period. Sometimes I wish I had been born fifteen or twenty years earlier so I could have experienced the heyday of Aip, New World, and their ilk firsthand, but living through the dawn of the home video boom wasn’t a bad trade off.

Greta Gerwig received the director of the year award at the Palm Springs Film Awards on Thursday night, where she reflected on her journey to helming the biggest movie of 2023 with Barbie.
Accepting her honor from Margot Robbie and America Ferrera, Gerwig mused how in 2020 she presented the same award to Quentin Tarantino for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, “and I cannot believe and I am beyond honored that tonight it is being given to me.”

The Muppet Babies say they’ll make our dreams come true but do they mean it? How long has it been that you’ve seen an episode of Muppet Babies? For some of us maybe since it went off the air in 1991 while the rest of us probably most recently caught it during its reruns not long after. And unless we’re talking bootlegs or VHS rips, that will probably be the last time we see the animated show. So what gives? Where are the diaper-clad versions of Kermit, Piggy, Fozzie, and the rest of the gang?
According to Guy Gilchrist, who worked under Jim Henson (albeit not on Muppet Babies), the reason we will never have the show has to do with rights. If you remember, the show would frequently incorporate clips of classic movies, TV shows and more as part of the Muppets’ fantasies, putting them in the...

This post contains minor spoilers for the "Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "The Inner Fight."
Throughout the fourth season of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," audiences have seen a mysterious white UFO, its motivations unknown, cruising about the galaxy attacking and destroying numerous alien vessels. Details about this UFO have slowly been revealed throughout the season, but its true secret remains. Who is flying it and why is it attacking non-Federation ships?
In the latest episode, called "The Inner Fight," it is also revealed that the UFO may be targeting specific Starfleet officers, again for reasons unknown. Captain Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) notes that one of the potential targets may be Dr. Beverly Crusher, once the chief medical officer on the U.S.S. Enterprise. Lieutenant Boimler (Jack Quaid), being intimately familiar with Starfleet history, immediately begins to geek out. He will get to meet the Dr. Beverly Crusher? He is giddy just at the possibility.

Look at us! Here we are! Right where we belong ... in 4K Ultra HD, that is!
It's true: "The Muppets Take Manhattan" is getting a fresh coat of paint for its new release on home media courtesy of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The third "Muppets" feature film and, sadly, the last one that creator Jim Henson and puppeteer Richard Hunt worked on prior to their untimely deaths, "Manhattan" sees Kermit and the gang graduating from college and headed to New York City in the hopes of turning their humble little stage musical, "Manhattan Melodies," into a Broadway sensation. But as you might expect, the suits that run the theatrical industry aren't quite as enthused about the prospect of a show all about frogs and dogs and bears and chickens and ... stuff.

It’s been a big year for Prime Video. From The Boys season 3 to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power to even the terrible games presented on Thursday Night Football, there were many hits to satisfy Jeff Bezos’ bottom line. How is the Amazon streamer planning on closing out 2022? Why, with another potential hit, of course!
Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for December 2022 is highlighted by the return of an old favorite. Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan season 3 premieres all eight episodes on Dec. 21. This time around John Krasinki’s CIA analyst will be dealing with a potentially nuclear conflict with Russia. The only other original TV series of note this month is Three Pines on Dec. 2. The mystery series stars Alfred Molina as Chief Inspector Armand Gamache.
Over on the movie side of things, Prime Video is bringing forward a major holiday tile on Dec.

At this year's D23 Expo, Brian Henson announced that his directorial debut "The Muppet Christmas Carol" would finally be coming to Disney+ in its complete and uncut form later this year. After a number of years of trying, the studio has finally found a way to properly restore the song "When Love Is Gone" to the film, so now it can be viewed the way it was originally intended.
However, "original" is a relative term in this instance because this beloved holiday classic that has become a seasonal staple for three decades was originally intended to be a TV special similar to the recent "Muppets Haunted Mansion." During the panel celebrating the film's legacy — and the new life it's about to receive thanks to this release — Henson shared the origins of what is regarded as one of the most faithful adaptations of Charles Dickens' iconic tale to date.

You ever notice how HBO’s releases tend to do the heavy lifting in HBO Max’s content library? The Queens Drive-In, which became a lifeline for New York film distributors, festival organizers, awards campaigners and cooped-up cinephiles in 2020, has booked an encore for this spring.
Kicking off the 2021 slate will be a screening of Coming 2 America on March 5, the same day the Eddie Murphy sequel will start streaming for Amazon Prime subscribers. The event is free and open to the public with RSVP, and Amazon Studios will provide free food and merchandise.
Screenings at the venue, which can accommodate up to 200 cars, are slated to continue through June. The drive-in news follows word from New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo earlier this week that indoor movie theaters can reopen in the city on March 5, with limited capacity. The coronavirus pandemic has kept theaters shuttered for nearly a year.
For now, drive-in showings will be offered only to moviegoers inside of vehicles due to Covid-19 precautions. Organizers said they...

With Muppets Now headed to Disney+ next year, we celebrate Kermit and company’s small-screen history...
Between all the news about Ms. Marvel and Obi-Wan Kenobi, it feels like Muppets Now was one of the less-discussed Disney+ announcements from last month’s D23 convention. Described as an unscripted short-form series featuring Jim Henson’s loveable creations alongside celebrity guests, the new show is intended to premiere on the House of Mouse’s new streaming service in 2020.
The series will be the latest in a long line of small-screen reboots for the Kermit-led puppet troupe, who have bounced between TV, movies, and the web since they first enchanted viewers in the 1970s.
But it’s not easy being evergreen and there seems to be a persistent impulse to put the Muppets in modernised vehicles, which doesn’t always pay off. The 2011 big-screen reboot concluded that the Muppets don...

During Disney+’s presentation at Disney’s D23 Expo event Friday, the company confirmed a short-form series featuring the Muppets. The “unscripted” series, titled Muppets Now, will debut in 2020.
The variety show, featuring celebrity guests, harkens back to the classic The Muppet Show, which too featured a celebrity guest in each episode.
The Muppets are among the most recognizable characters in the Disney IP library, and Disney+ had been trying for more than a year to get a new scripted series with them off the ground, going through two rounds of development with different creative teams, including a take co-written by Josh Gad, Muppets Live Another Day, which went to pilot. Set right after the events in 1984’s The Muppets Take Manhattan, that project features Kermit and the gang searching for Rowlf.

With a performing and directing career like Frank Oz’s, one with plenty of contributions to storytelling franchises still going strong after decades of existence, chances were good that not all of them would continue the way he’d wanted. Speaking at a SXSW event at the Austin Convention Center on Monday afternoon moderated by IndieWire’s Eric Kohn, the veteran filmmaker and voice of a number of characters spoke about his lengthy career, including the existing state of a handful of beloved film and TV series.
“Unfortunately ‘Sesame Street’ is only a shadow of what it was because now they’re just aiming it to little kids. And I’m unhappy about that. I would like to be there. I used to go like two days a year just to show everybody how it used to be,” Oz said.

It’s not easy being computer animated, especially if you want to look more like the puppets on which you’re based. The team behind Disney Junior’s “Muppet Babies” worked countless hours to create a technique that makes today’s animated versions of Kermit, Piggy, Animal and the rest of the gang appear like the puppets used in 1984’s “The Muppets Take Manhattan,” where they were first featured.
“One of the things that we wanted to solve was tying the animated Muppet Babies to the adult puppets in a way that a kid could see baby Kermit and then see adult Kermit and go, ‘Oh, it’s the same.’” explains Matt Danner, co-producer, supervising director and the voice of Kermit on the series. “We got to work with all the puppet makers at the Muppet Studio and the real Muppets, and we spent a lot of time developing CG...

The third season premiere of “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” opened with a song entitled “Where’s Rebecca Bunch?” to address the second season’s cliffhanger: how and when Rebecca (Rachel Bloom) would react to being stood up on her wedding day. “It was way more plot-driven than we normally do,” executive producer Aline Brosh McKenna says of the vibrant musical number. “We had to explain a lot about the world and reset the world because it was right at the beginning of the episode. She didn’t really have the nerve to go full-[on] revenge mode, and the song tells you she’s disappeared, everyone’s looking for her, and she’s holed up in a hotel, depressed, gathering the resolve she needs.” And it was all done as a period piece.

Previously-mooted Disney+ scripted series Muppets Live Another Day has been taken off the developmental slate.
The Muppets are, unsurprisingly, not done with television, thanks to Disney’s grandiose streaming self-distribution designs with the November-launching Disney+; an idea recently confirmed with the news of an unscripted Muppets short-form reboot series. However, the late Jim Henson’s fuzzy anthropomorphic oddities might just have a zero-sum dynamic at Disney, since the other series they had in development, a scripted offering titled Muppets Live Another Day, has been taken off the Mouse’s streaming slate.
News of the cancelation of Muppets Live Another Day, which arrives via THR, reveal that Disney has gone in a different direction from the project, which first blipped the news cycle radar back in February 2018, though was never officially announced. Consequently, the series plans have imploded after creative differences led to the exit of its primary trio,...

Hannah Horvath is going to be a mom.
But her brief foray into playing mom (to her own mom, no less) on Girls Season 6 Episode 5 didn't go so swimmingly.
After the game-changing reveal that Hannah is pregnant on Girls Season 6 Episode 4, "Gummies" made clear that Hannah's first thought to keep the baby isn't something that she'll just be changing her mind about on a whim. No, the latest installment of Girls made it undeniably obvious that Hannah is diving into this mom thing, head on.

With that in mind, here’s a list of 25 movies that are almost-guaranteed to make you smile and restore your faith in humanity...

In truth, any of Charlie Chaplin’s films are perfect for those times when you just need to smile.

Disney is planning a Muppet Babies reboot, reviving the popular zany, infant-filled quasi-prequel of the 1980’s.
Even though Disney’s last attempt to bring The Muppets back to television resulted in an ABC series cancelled after a single season, plans are in the works for more small screen Muppets mayhem.

Disney Junior has announced that the one and only Muppet Babies will be getting the reboot treatment on the young children’s cable channel. While the original 1980’s CBS Saturday morning standard featured conventionally drawn animation, the upcoming reboot will instead manifest as a CGI-based series (as seen in the picture above), structuring each episode into a duo of 11-minute stories. Per the Disney Junior branding, the new Muppet Babies will be aimed at children ages 4-7.

Muppet fans should prepare to forget what they thought they understood about the balance of power in the relationship between Miss Piggy and Kermit The Frog. The video mashup specialists at Darth Blender have created a profoundly not-right little concoction entitled “Fifty Shades Of Muppets” that is everything its title implies.
Yes, this is a parody of the trailer for the 2015 film version of Fifty Shades Of Grey starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan, only with Kermit and Piggy in the lead roles. Clips from various Muppet movies, especially Muppets Most Wanted and The Muppets Take Manhattan, are employed to create the illusion that Kermit is portraying mysterious businessman Christian Grey and that Piggy is naïve college student Anastasia Steele. Here, it is kinky Kermit who indoctrinates prudish Piggy into the world of sadomasochism. This stands as a direct rebuke of decades of films and TV shows that have ...
