The latest single from Katy Perry’s upcoming sixth studio album, 143, finds the singer and Florida rapper Doechii clapping back at “hoes” who creep into their partners’ DMs. The midtempo “I’m His, He’s Mine,” which the duo previewed at Wednesday night’s MTV Video Music Awards, follows the more dance-oriented singles “Woman’s World” and “Lifetimes,” but where those songs felt instantly dated, “I’m His, He’s Mine” is much more on trend.
Constructed around a downturned sample of the iconic organ riff from Crystal Waters’s 1991 hit “Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless),” the three-minute “I’m His, He’s Mine” is a low-key slow burner. Fully committed to the interpolation, Perry slides into a variation of Waters’s infectious “la-da-dee, la-da-da” hook during the post-chorus. She and Doechii also nod to another club classic, Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman,” throughout: “I’m every woman he knows exists…...

A cotton candy career of hits becomes a futuristic, post-apocalyptic dream. At Wednesday night’s VMAs, Katy Perry took the stage to deliver a medley of her greatest hits (and her new album, 143) as she celebrated receiving the coveted Video Vanguard Award.
Perry’s performance opened with a montage of her greatest videos. She kicked off her medley of hits by floating in the middle of a circle as she performed “Dark Horse.” Perry was wearing a futuristic, alien-like top as she flew over the crowd and was brought to the ground.

Katy Perry has worn a number of hats at the MTV Video Music Awards over the years, from winner to performer to presenter. Heck, she even hosted one year. But after Wednesday’s VMAs, Perry can add one more elusive title to her impressive resume: Video Vanguard.
In addition to accepting this prestigious honor — one recently presented to Shakira (2023), Nicki Minaj (2022) and Missy Elliott (2019) — Perry also took the stage to perform a medley of the hits that paved the way to this career-defining moment.

In less than two weeks, Katy Perry will release her latest album, 143. The album era began in July with “Woman’s World” and continued with “Lifetimes” in August. Neither single has been received exactly how Perry seemed to hope they would as far as her comeback goes, so she’s breaking out a secret weapon — and not the one that has been the source of controversy in her album release. The Florida rapper Doechii will appear on the next 143 single, “I’m His, He’s Mine,” out Friday, Sept. 13.

Katy Perry’s album 143, which is out Sept. 20, has been a long time coming, marking her first LP since 2020’s Smile. The singer officially launched her 143 era in June when she dropped the lead single “Woman’s World.” The song immediately faced pushback for its stereotypical imagery — which Perry later said was intentional — and generic pop sound. Rolling Stone later confirmed that Perry had worked with some of the producers behind Teenage Dream and Prism, including Max Martin — and, to the disappointment of many, Dr. Luke.
Perry followed “Woman’s World” with the electro-pop single “Lifetimes.

Singer Katy Perry has addressed her decision to continue working with Dr. Luke on her upcoming album ‘143’ – after Kesha accused him of sexual abuse.
In a discussion on the September 4th episode of Call Her Daddy With Alex Cooper podcast, Perry, 39, had expressed, “I understand that it started a lot of conversations, and he was one of many collaborators that I worked with.”
However, she emphasized that the core of the music is her own creation: “The truth is, I wrote these songs from my experience of my whole life, going through this metamorphosis, and he was one of the people to help facilitate all that — one of the writers, one of the producers.”
Dr. Luke’s History With Katy Perry
Dr Luke, whose real name is Lukasz Gottwald, has a long history with Perry too, producing her breakout hit ‘I Kissed a Girl’ in 2008, as well as her recent ‘Woman’s World’ single.

Katy Perry is speaking out on the backlash she received over working with Dr. Luke (Lukasz Gottwald) on her new album.
While appearing on the Call Her Daddy podcast, the singer was asked about the producer’s involvement in her upcoming sixth album. Perry received criticism over choosing to work with Gottwald given he had been in a legal battle for nine years with singer Kesha Sebert, known as Kesha, after she alleged she was drugged and sexually assaulted and wanted out of her recording agreement. Meanwhile, Gottwald maintained the accusation was false and sued for defamation and breach of contract. They reached an agreement last June, less than a month before the case was set for trial.

Katy Perry is facing scrutiny from Spanish authorities over the filming of her latest music video on protected sand dunes without proper authorization.
The Spanish government has launched an investigation into the production of Perry’s video for her new single “Lifetimes,” which allegedly includes scenes shot on ecologically sensitive dunes on S’Espalmador, a small uninhabited island in the Balearic archipelago.
Officials from the Balearic Islands’ environmental department claim that WeOwnTheCity, the production company responsible for the video, failed to obtain the necessary permits to film at the location. While the majority of the video was shot on the larger islands of Ibiza and Formentera, the unauthorized filming on S’Espalmador has raised concerns.

Katy Perry’s latest music video, which features her enjoying a beach setting, is under investigation for allegedly being filmed in a restricted area without the necessary permits.
In a press release written in Catalan, the Balearic Islands’ Ministry of Agriculture announced on Tuesday that it has initiated an investigation into the production of the “Lifetimes” music video.
The ministry claims that the production company did not secure the required authorization to film at Ses Salines Natural Park, located between Ibiza and Formentera, an area recognized for its sand dunes.
The ministry emphasized that this incident is not considered an environmental crime. Reports from The Guardian and Billboard indicate that the restricted area is marked off with ropes.
Capitol Records’ Response
A spokesperson for Capitol Records, Perry’s music label, provided a statement to USA Today on Wednesday, explaining, “The local video production company assured us that all necessary permits for the video were secured.

She’s set to perform some of her greatest hits — with her new single, “Lifetimes,” which came out last week, likely to be part of any medley. Her high-profile appearance will come nine days before Perry releases her new album, “143,” on Sept. 20.
Perry’s appearance will mark her first time on the show since 2017, when she collaborated with Nicki Minaj for that telecast’s finale.
“Katy is a musical powerhouse and true pop culture icon,” said Bruce Gillmer, the president of music, music talent, programming and events for Paramount and chief content officer, music, for Paramount+. “With her game-changing creative vision, she has become a global phenomenon and taken over the world’s biggest stages.

Sixteen years after topping the charts with “I Kissed a Girl,” Katy Perry is set to receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.
The pop star will also perform at the event, taking place Sept. 11 at Ubs Arena in Belmont Park, New York. The show was originally supposed to air live on Sept. 10 but changed to avoid airing opposite the presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.
Perry, who has won five VMAs, was last at the awards show in 2017, when she hosted and performed. Since 2008, she has released 14 Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including nine No. 1s. Her sophomore album, Teenage Dream, launched five No. 1 singles — matching a record set by Jackson in 1987 with Bad.

Former American Idol judge Katy Perry seems to have found herself in some hot water in Spain, including a major investigation. So, what did Perry get herself into this time around?
Katy Perry Left American Idol To Pursue Other Things
As is typically the case when you have celebrity judges on a reality competition, at a certain point, they leave in order to pursue other things. Viewers have seen this with celeb judges on programs like The Voice. In Katy Perry’s case with American Idol, it was very much the same.
After serving as a judge on American Idol for years, Katy Perry left in order to pursue other things. The one silver lining from this is the fact that Carrie Underwood is on board to replace the Dark Horse singer. So, in many ways, this switch worked out well for everyone.

Spanish officials have opened an investigation into the production company for Katy Perry‘s latest music video for filming in protected dunes of the Balearic Islands without permission.
The Stillz-directed video for Perry’s newly released single Lifetimes from her sixth studio album 143 shows the singer partying and clubbing on the Mediterranean islands, but Spanish authorities released a statement Tuesday saying authorization was not sought to film on the ecologically sensitive land on the isle of S’Espalmado in Formentera.
Officials are looking into possible damage to the dunes, though Perry and the production team are not at risk of being persecuted for any “crime against the environment” because videos and photography “can be authorized” upon request.
The ministry in charge of conservation of the area said “in no case had the production company requested authorization from the ministry to carry out the filming” and that is why a preliminary investigation has been initiated.

Following the disastrous rollout of her recent single, “Woman’s World,” Katy Perry appears to have found herself in more hot water, this time for the unauthorized filming of her new music video, “Lifetimes,” on Spain’s Balearic Islands.
According to a translated statement from the regional government’s environmental department, an investigation has been opened after the production company responsible for the music video didn’t request the necessary authorization to film at the protected dunes at Ses Salines Natural Park.
Other parts of the music video showing Perry on various beaches, at clubs, and dancing through cities were filmed in different parts of the region, but the interior of the dune system of s’Espalmador is an especially fragile ecosystem the Balearic government describes as holding “great ecological value.”

Zhang Yimou, director of many of China’s most spectacular and successful movies, is to try his hand at sci-fi. He will direct a film adaptation of “The Three-Body Problem.”
The project was announced Sunday by Wang Changtian, founder and CEO of Enlight Media, one of China’s top three studios, at a forum organized within the Shanghai International Film Festival.
Wang said that Zhang is in the early stages of preparations for the film. “We hope that director Zhang Yimou can grasp the essence of the ‘Three-Body Problem’ novel and make some breakthroughs and innovations, and gain something in the international market,” said Wang. Chinese state media subsequently reported that copyright holder The Three-Body Universe Cultural Development had confirmed Wang’s information.

It has been commonplace in academic circles to divide up and label Chinese filmmakers into generations that reflect socio-political currents as much as cinematic style.
Chen Kaige and Zhang Yimou, who were educated at the end of the Cultural Revolution, are considered the leading lights of the “fifth generation.” The rebellious cluster that followed them, Zhang Yuan, Wang Xioashuai, Jia Zhangke and Lou Ye are among those labelled as “sixth generation.”
But with substantial bodies of work under their belts and international reputations already established, the sixth generation are no longer quite so new, nor so angry.
The four Chinese films selected for the main competition – all world premieres – at this year’s Shanghai International Film Festival represent a showcase of directors who are also known-quantities, but who are worthy of higher profiles. (The festival’s Asian Talent selection has a further selection of six more directors seeking to break through.

Nobody really makes AIDS dramas anymore, which seems as good a reason as any to make one now. The disease that, forty-odd years ago, decimated a generation of queer people and prompted a prejudice-driven global panic hasn’t gone away — least of all in various developing countries, where it isn’t popularly defined by gender or sexuality, and death rates are still high. But its narrative has changed. For many, advances in antiretroviral and preventative drugs have stripped HIV of its aura of terror, making it something to be lived with, not a ticking clock to the end. With little posturing or overtly groundbreaking intent, French writer-director Gaël Morel unusually and sensitively bridges these eras of HIV/AIDS in his gentle romantic melodrama “To Live, To Die, To Live Again” — beginning in a distinctly Nineties register of mainstream queer cinema, before looking ahead to the 21st century.

Even for viewers unfamiliar with Zhang Yimou's oeuvre, there's a certain je-ne-sais-quoi about one of the opening scenes of his 1994 masterpiece, “To Live”. Clearly, the protagonist Fugui (Ge You) is made to be unlikeable — or perhaps an unlikely hero, there's a creeping thought — as he ignorantly loses all his money to his greedy opponent while his wife pleads for him to return home. The sequence of events gives such a rich portrait of who Fugui is at this stage in his life and also sets the stage for a number of other events throughout the film. The scene's dramatic arc delivers punch after punch as the viewer watches Fugui slowly lose everything to his opponent — and to his ego.
The bald young Fugui, already a gambling addict, goes to the parlor once again to play. With a confident stance and slight smirk, he faces his opponent Long'er (Ni Dahong) in craps,...

"Takano Tofu” claimed double honors on the closing night of the Far East Film Festival in Udine, Italy. It won the Golden Mulberry audience award and the MyMovies Purple Mulberry award.
Directed by Mihara Mitsuhiro, “Takano Tofu” is a melodrama about an elderly tofu-making craftsman, who is stuck in his ways but is also experimental and who is kindly, but whose stubbornness brings suffering on those around him. Udine’s Japan selector, Mark Schilling compared the work to that of master director Ozu Yasujiro.
The prizes were handed out in the early hours of Friday after a marathon day of celebratory activity that started with Chinese director Zhang Yimou on hand for a screening of his “Raise the Red Lantern,” continued with a generous-spirited masterclass and in the evening continued with the handover of Zhang’s lifetime achievement award. Two more films – Zhang’s “To Live” and the premiere of...
