Joss Whedon has had a dramatic career trajectory in Hollywood. But before his rise to fame after the huge reception of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, he was just a normal writer trying to etch a place for himself in Tinsel Town. In the 80s, he started lending his scriptwriting skills to blockbusters such as Alien: Resurrection and Twister, to name a few.

Dexter‘s titular character was a serial killer who went undetected for years, so it makes sense that a prequel about his teen years will contain secrets of its own — even for diehard fans of the original series.
TVLine’s Keisha Hatchett caught up with Molly Brown, who plays a young Deb in the upcoming Dexter: Original Sin, at San Diego Comic-Con Saturday, to get the lowdown on the new series. “The scripts are so good,” Brown teases in the video above. “There’s some really, really good stuff at the end of the season.”

“It’s not a remake. It’s not a sequel. And it’s not based on a Japanese one.”
Hatchet‘s festival tagline — a quote from a major studio’s rejection of the film — served as a rally cry for horror fans. Despite its roots planted firmly in practical effects-driven ’80s slashers a la Friday the 13th, Hatchet felt fresh and exciting when it arrived in 2006; a gory but lighthearted reprieve from torturous studio horror littered with janky CGI and cheap scares.
Willed into existence by writer-director Adam Green based on a character he conceived as an 8-year-old summer camper, the Hatchet franchise centers on Victor Crowley — the hulking, vengeful spirit of a deformed boy that haunts the swamps of New Orleans. Alyson Hannigan’s cinematic career has been marked by several beloved and iconic roles. The actress started her career with several supporting roles in movies like Impure Thoughts and My Stepmother Is an Alien in the 1980s. In the modern age of streaming and prestige TV, less is often considered more. A season of TV will be six, eight, or if you’re really lucky, 10 episodes long. It has been a bone of contention. During the recent writers’ strike, shorter seasons of streaming shows was one of the fields of conflict.
On the other hand, in a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Star Trek’s current head honcho Alex Kurtzman argued, “it’s funny you can talk to old writers of old Trek series, and they’re like, ‘Man, there’s a bunch of filler episodes in there. We are just trying to get to 22 a season,’ you know, and, and we all know which of those episodes were [filler], we know the ones that were truly stellar from the ones that felt like they were kind of spinning their wheels.”

A little over a year ago, Showtime announced that they were ordering a series – then known as Dexter: Origins, now known as Dexter: Original Sin – that would serve as a prequel series to their popular show Dexter, which finished its eight season initial run back in 2013, then recently came back for a new season (called Dexter: New Blood) that appeared to wrap things up for good… We’ve been hearing Dexter: Original Sin casting announcements here and there in recent weeks, and now Deadline has unveiled a batch of images that give us our first look at a few of the cast members in action! Featured in these images are Patrick Gibson of Shadow and Bone as the young Dexter Morgan, Christian Slater of Mr. Robot as Dexter’s dad, Harry Morgan, and Molly Brown of Senior Year as Dexter’s younger sister, Debra Morgan, and they can be seen...

With fewer eligible series — a consequence of both last year’s strikes and of a general post-Peak TV contraction — it seemed unlikely that the Emmys (the second such ceremony this year!) would provide much in the way of surprises.
Perhaps, though, awards-watchers shouldn’t have counted them out.
Wednesday morning’s nominations announcement featured at least one major contender (Emma Stone in “The Curse”) shut out, and included heartening and unexpected recognition for other stars whose names hadn’t been part of the conversation to this point. (Congratulations to Idris Elba and Matt Berry!)
In all, the Emmy nominations depict an industry in rapid transition — relatively few returning series made the cut. But nowhere was the competition more pitched, and the volume of surprise omissions as high, as in the limited series field. (Read the full list of nominees here.)

The end-credits scenes have become something of a Marvel Cinematic Universe staple, but perhaps the greatest one of all came about because Robert Downey Jr., who plays Iron Man, thought a very basic line could use a little punching up. Downey was already comfortable advocating for himself and throwing out ideas. He even got the team behind the first "Iron Man" to let him sneak in a bit about a life-changing sandwich. So when it came to the final moment in the first big superhero team-up in the MCU, "The Avengers," the actor had some ideas about how he wanted things to go.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the cast of "The Avengers" and its writer and director, Joss Whedon, revealed that Downey was the impetus for the movie's now-famous and much-beloved post-credits shawarma scene. The scene, which takes place after the final credits have rolled, shows the Avengers...

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
For nearly as long as movies have been a form of mass entertainment, the disaster genre has brought excitement and thrills to the big screen, dating back to 1933's "Deluge," which picks up in the aftermath of a massive earthquake in New York. At some point, these films became big business, commanding big budgets in Hollywood. Look no further than 1998, when both "Armageddon" and "Deep Impact" opened mere months from one another, offering radically different takes on the whole asteroid colliding with the Earth scenario. The '90s also gifted us a very important entry in this enduring genre in the form of director Jan de Bont's "Twister."

Editor’s note: this list was originally published in October 2022. It has since been updated with new selections.
If horror’s limitless capacity for remakes, re-imaginings, and spinoffs teaches us anything, it’s that our nightmares never really change. Since before “Nosferatu” darkened the silent film scene in 1922 — heck, even before Bram Stoker terrified readers with “Dracula” in 1897 — vampires have transfixed audiences with their chilling blend of romance and menace. Movies like “Twilight” and “Interview with the Vampire” are memorable for weaving epic undead dramas for the big screen, but vampire sagas have arguably seen more creative permutations on TV, with whole casts of blood-sucking stars appearing in shows like “True Blood” and “Castlevania.”
The best vampire TV shows examine the archetypal underpinnings of the gothic-infused subgenre by referencing them in unexpected ways. Classic situational comedies like “Dark Shadows” make entertaining light of garlic, coffins, and the (pun intended) stakes of it all.

We've seen hundreds of times how brilliant ideas turned into mediocre works in the wrong hands. But the opposite examples are no more common than seeing a vampire on the street on a sunny day.
The premise of Buffy the Vampire Slayer would fit into a B-movie horror movie concept at best, but certainly not into a cult TV show. But first impressions are deceiving: Joss Whedon's most famous show turned out to be the gem you never expect to find – but once you see it, you never tire of admiring it.
The growing popularity of Buffy led to Whedon and The WB launching a spin-off series, Angel, simultaneously with the fourth season of the original show.
What Was the Story Behind Angel?
The bloody path of the vampire Angel ended when the Kalderash people revived his human soul. Horrified by his own atrocities, the vampire decided to atone for his crimes.

Maybe I've simply been in the game too long, but spoilers just don't bother me anymore. /Film's Bj Colangelo put it best in her own takedown of spoiler culture and media: "Without actually seeing the spoiler in action or having context, we can't know the execution of the scene, the tone, or see the reactions characters have to the moment ... all necessary cues to a moment's impact." I myself have gone in fully spoiled for many films and TV series I've seen in recent years (such is the nature of this industry), yet I usually come away feeling either far less annoyed or more deeply moved by major reveals or character deaths. It all depends on how they're handled.
I get it, though. For casual viewers, investing years of your life in a story only for some jagoff to ruin the ending or a shocking twist must be infuriating. It...

The Dexter prequel series, Original Sin, is getting a new addition to the cast in the form of Sarah Michelle Gellar. Longtime fans know that the actress has an iconic resume for all things macabre, so, it’s not hard to imagine her fitting right in. What do we know so far?
Dexter Is One Of The Most Popular Shows Of All Time
The original Dexter show premiered all the way back in 2006. It featured Michael C. Hall as the title character. Dexter was a forensic analyst specializing in blood splatter analysis by day. This made him the ideal person to know how to get away with murder as a twisted vigilante who also collected blood slide trophies.
Since premiering in 2006, Dexter fast became one of the greatest shows ever made. The fact that, nearly 20 years later, they are still continuing the story, proves that there is genuine interest in exploring the character,...

“My Lady Jane” may be chock full of corsets but this is not your average bodice ripper. A feminist retelling of the life of Lady Jane Grey – famous for being on the throne for a mere nine days before she got the chop (literally) – the series stars Emily Bader as a kickass Jane who dreams of running away from her overbearing mother and forced marriage to write a compendium about medicinal herbs.
The show, which drops today on Prime Video and is based on the books of the same name, also contains plenty of cursing (not the magical kind), anachronisms and a sprinkle of romantasy (a sub-plot involves persecution of people who can turn into animals at will). So it’s not surprising that showrunners Gemma Burgess and Meredith Glynn took delight in peppering the show with both Tudor and pop culture references including, in no particular order, Mark Smeaton...

Sarah Michelle Gellar will boss around a certain serial killer in training in Dexter: Original Sin. In a special guest starring role, Gellar will play Tanya Martin, the CSI Chief at the Miami Metro Police Department and Dexter Morgan’s (Patrick Gibson) new boss.
The 10-episode original drama series from Paramount+ With Showtime, set in 1991 Miami, follows Dexter, a student who is refining his killer skills with the help and support of his adoptive father Harry (Christian Slater). In his dad, he finds solace and understanding, especially as his bloodthirsty urges grow and can no longer be ignored. As his only confidant, Harry teaches Dexter a code that’s designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to die — all while avoiding getting caught by law enforcement. Former Fox Broadcasting Network Chief Operating Officer Jamie Kellner. (Still frame via C-span broadcast)
Jamie Kellner, one of the most-influential broadcast television executives of the late 20th century who oversaw the development and launch of two upstart networks, died last Friday at the age of 77. The cause of death was attributed to cancer.
Kellner served as the first President and Chief Operating Officer at the Fox Broadcast Network in the mid-1980s, orchestrating the build-out of Fox’s programming slate and helping it secure distribution on over-the-air stations in key markets and cable platforms in hard-to-reach corners of the country.
Kellner helped champion programming like “In Living Color,” “Married…with Children,” “21 Jump Street” and “The Simpsons” and “Cops,” which help set the tone for American television across two decades. He left Fox for the WB Network in 1993, which operated as a joint venture between Warner Bros Television and Tribune Broadcasting.

Jamie Kellner, the charismatic and crafty executive who expanded the broadcast television landscape by helping hatch the Fox and WB networks in 1987 and 1995, respectively, had died. He was 77.
Kellner died Friday at his Montecito, California, home after a battle with cancer, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
While still riding high atop The WB, Kellner in March 2001 was given additional responsibilities overseeing TBS, TNT and CNN as chairman and CEO of Time Warner sister company Turner Broadcasting System. But he was at that for just two years, before he retired and served out the remainder of his contract back in Burbank.
Meanwhile, Kellner was chairman of the station ownership group Acme Communications — named after the company in the Road Runner cartoons at Warner Bros. — from its launch in 1997 until it was liquidated in 2016. He was the rare network TV exec who also had a hand in the station business; Acme’s first nine stations,...

Son Kiefer Sutherland writes on Twitter, “With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.”
Donald Sutherland made a handful of notable pit stops in the horror genre throughout his multi-decade career on the screen, which kicked off back in the early 1960s. Boreanaz said his abilities as a writer were developing. “I’m really good at the dialogue writing. I’m very good at that. I’m getting better at structure. You know, it is work in progress for me. But I love character breakdowns.

Arguably, the 2000s produced some of the best movies in the genre. It saw a growth in popularity, especially among the teen demographics. The 1990s laid a strong foundation for the subgenre growth with its infusion of comedy in film and television productions such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. Alongside witches, vampires have dominated the horror genre for centuries. Although a growing number of the genre’s audiences argue that it has watered down from its true horror, over the years, the horror genre remains one of the leading Box Office earners in Hollywood. In revisiting one of the...

Ensembles are the lifeblood of television. "Scooby-Doo" had the Mystery Machine team. "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" had the Scooby Gang (no relation). "Riverdale" had its polycule, which it ultimately dubbed the "Quad." With its distinctive blend of humor and horror, Hart Hanson's "Bones" followed the motley crew at the Jeffersonian Institute as they cracked murder cases week in, week out. But when you really drill down to its core, you'll find that a lot of the show's most endearing players weren't around for as long as you might think.
Takes Dr. Sweets. Everybody's favorite nerdy FBI psychologist infamously died a heartbreaking premature death after John Francis Daley's directing career went into overdrive. Still, you'd be forgiven for forgetting that he didn't actually show up until season 3, episode 4, "The Secret in the Soil," considering he ultimately appeared in an eye-watering 138 episodes (albeit out of 246 total). The same goes for Cam.

You can probably thank director Renny Harlin's "Die Hard 2" for the influx of vehicle-based "'Die Hard" riffs that flooded the market in the '90s, including those set on planes ("Air Force One"), trains ("Under Siege"), and automobiles ("Speed"). Director Jan de Bont's "Speed," in particular, might just represent the peak of this formula. The 30-year-old film saw the first-time helmer, who had previously honed his visual sensibilities as a cinematographer on the likes of "Cujo," "Black Rain," and "The Hunt for Red October," delivering a tight-as-hell, crowd-pleasing thrill ride.

Jane Schoenbrun's audacious, original "I Saw The TV Glow" mesmerized audiences at its Sundance Film Festival debut earlier this year and was given a theatrical release by the folks at A24 last month, but according to The-Numbers, that release only made its way to 469 theaters across North America. Compared to the thousands of theaters that play big movies like "The Fall Guy" or "Inside Out 2," it's safe to guess there are likely a lot of folks who were interested in seeing "I Saw The TV Glow," but it simply wasn't playing in a theater near them. Thankfully, the movie is now available to watch at home digitally, so hopefully the folks who are curious about it will be able to track it down and let it wash over them.

Stars: Justice Smith, Brigette Lundy-Paine, Ian Foreman, Helena Howard, Fred Durst, Danielle Deadwyler | Written and Directed by Jane Schoenbrun
On school election night in 1996, 7th grader Owen (Justice Smith) meets 9th grader Maddy (Brigette Lundy-Paine), who is engrossed by an episode guide of her favorite TV show, The Pink Opaque. Her enthusiasm for the series catches Owen’s interest, and the pair begin to watch the show together. Years pass by and The Pink Opaque still keeps the pair connected, until the show becomes more than just fiction.
Few films have been as unexpectedly poignant as I Saw the TV Glow. It’s one that viewers are possibly best coming into blind, leaving absolutely every 90s-themed twist and turn to the expected. There’s an incredible amount of nuance and yet, thanks to Jane Schoenbrun’s skilled creatorship, it’s all amazingly accessible. Absolutely anybody watching can understand why this...

Most of the surface-level conversation surrounding Jane Schoenbrun’s brilliant and dark horror film I Saw The TV Glow revolves around the similarities between its central piece of pop culture and a particular TV touchstone: Buffy The Vampire Slayer. This makes sense since The Pink Opaque, the fictional cult TV show that captivates main characters Owen (Justice Smith) and Maddie (Brigette Lundy-Paine), shares multiple elements pertaining to Buffy: kickass female protagonists, a blend of ‘myth’ episodes, and even references to a Bronze-esque venue for teen heroes to unwind after battling monsters. A cameo by Amber Benson, a favorite from Buffy, further...

Alyson Hannigan Fondly Remembers Her Role In American Pie(Photo Credit –Instagram)
Following the 25th anniversary of the first 1999 American Pie movie, Alyson Hannigan made a stunning revelation about her role as the lovable band nerd Michelle Flaherty and how she nearly missed out on the sequels.
During an interview with Vulture, Hannigan added, “The best story from the whole thing was that you know, it was a low-budget movie with all these tiers of negotiations. There was an A-tier and a B-tier. I think I was on the bottom C-tier with Seann [William Scott].”
She continued, “I was like, ‘Okay, fine.’ It was seven days and it was more of a passion project. Then, in the contract, there was a sequel clause. I said, ‘Look, I’m getting paid scale plus 10. I’m not going to sign for a sequel. That doesn’t make sense.’ I sound like I was being really difficult,...

Where are all my witches at?
I, like many women of my age, spent a formative part of my youth enamored with the idea of witches. While Buffy the Vampire Slayer wasn’t quite my bag, I adored Charmed. My VHS copy of Practical Magic got more play than a yo-yo. And, of course, I was an avid viewer of Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
Did I myself dabble in magical arts, though? No, and I won’t pretend I did either. But man, did I so often wish that one day I’d just wake up with magical powers. I also wished I’d wake up one day and have a twin, too, as I also voraciously devoured the T*Witches novel series.
When it came to classic Halloween tropes, witches often received the lightest treatment for a long time. Witch media, post the long-standing green-face, wart-nosed, pointy-hat likeness instead...

Matt Bomer is an actor known for starring in projects like White Collar, Fellow Travelers, and, Magic Mike. Being an openly gay actor in the early 2000s, Bomer recently talked about a certain Superman role that he continuously auditioned for but was ultimately rejected.

“There’s something out there waiting for us, and it ain’t no man.”
The typical slasher movie formula sees a group of people, often teens, stalked and hunted by a relentless killer with bladed weapons. Predator, released in theaters on June 12, 1987, retooled the slasher rules, swapping out vulnerable adolescents with a well-armed elite military squad prepared to take on guerilla camps in the jungle. Yet, not even they were equipped for the extraterrestrial threat that targeted them as worthy prey.
Seeing special ops so effortlessly dispatched in the grisliest ways is one effective way to increase the threat level of any horror antagonist, alien or otherwise, but director John McTiernan layers in gradual reveals about the eponymous hunter in a way that launched a franchise and clinched the creature’s movie icon status.
