The ‘90s are back – also in Naima Mohamud’s upcoming “Halima,” produced by Finland’s It’s Alive Films, behind Oscar entry “Euthanizer,” and No-Office Films.
“It was a wild time. The hair! The clothes! I really wanted to go back to when boybands, Tamagotchis and popper pants were all the rage. And Aqua, the greatest ‘90s pop band in the world, [behind] ‘Barbie Girl’!” enthused the director, who used to be “obsessed” with its singer Lene Nystrøm.
“I tried cutting my own bangs and dyeing my hair with food coloring to rock her hairstyle. It didn’t work, of course, and the following months were agony. I got told off for wasting food coloring my mother needed to make Somali dessert halwa.”
In Mohamud’s partly autobiographical “down-to-earth dramedy about loneliness, childhood and conquering your fears” – currently in development and eyeing a 2025 shoot – it will be Halima’s turn to experience such “heartwarming and humorous” misadventures.

Editor’s note: this list was originally published in July 2023. It has since been updated with new entries.
To quote Alice Cooper (and poorly paraphrase “High School Musical 2”), school’s out for summer. With Boppenheimer hitting air-conditioned theaters midway through July — just as countless actors and screenwriters head into the heat to join picket-lines in New York and Los Angeles — summer 2023 will no doubt prove a memorable one for Hollywood. What better time then to consider how the movies themselves represent the reason for the season?
The best summer vacation movies range in subject matter and can appeal to all sorts of different audiences. Kid-centric flicks, like “The Parent Trap,” and adult slashers, like the “Friday the 13th” films, explore the traditions and perils of sleep-away camp from spectacularly different view points. Meanwhile, road trip flicks, like the Audrey Hepburn-starring “Two for the Road” and Hindi film “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara,...

Lindsay Lohan recently told ABC’s “Nightline” that returning to the Disney lot to film “Freaky Friday 2” has her feeling like a little kid again as it’s the place where she filmed not only the original “Freaky Friday” but also some of her biggest hits, like her breakthrough role in 1998’s “The Parent Trap.” Lohan stayed in the Disney family in the years that followed with films such as “Life-Size” (2000), “Get a Clue” (2002) and more.
“I think really for me was when I went onto the Disney lot,” Lohan said. “And being back on the Disney lot because that’s not just ‘Freaky Friday’ for me. That’s ‘The Parent Trap,’ that’s ‘Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen,’ that’s ‘Herbie.’ It’s so many moments for me. So when I got there, I kind of felt like this essence of a little kid again.”

Lindsay Lohan felt "like a kid again" returning to the Disney set for 'Freaky Friday 2'.The 38-year-old former child star is reuniting with her screen mom Jamie Lee Curtis, 65, for a long-awaited sequel to the 2003 body-swap classic as Anna and Tess Coleman, respectively, and she has been feeling very nostalgic about her Disney years and "emotional" reuniting with her co-stars.She said of recently returning to the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California, on 'Nightline': “Jamie [Lee Curtis] and I have stayed in touch over the years.“You know how they say when you have a best friend or someone you’re really close with? If you cannot see them for years and years, but when you see them again, it’s like you never separated."Lindsay continued: “I think really for me was when I went onto the Disney lot. The first trailer for legendary director M. Night Shyamalan's newest thriller, "Trap," appeared to spill the beans about the movie's biggest twist. Josh Hartnett, seemingly playing a nice and caring father, takes his teen daughter (Ariel Donoghue) to a concert where fictional pop superstar Lady Raven (real-life singer Saleka Shyamalan) is performing. Hartnett's character quickly learns that the entire concert is actually an elaborate trap orchestrated by the police to capture a serial killer named The Butcher, who they suspect will be in attendance.
Oh yeah, and Hartnett's character? He's The Butcher.
As we continue to wonder whether Shyamalan is hiding an additional story surprise up his sleeve here, Warner Bros. has released a brand new trailer for the movie that showcases more of what happens after The Butcher discovers he's been cornered like an animal. I initially wondered if the concert might just be the setting for the first act of the movie,...

10. The Thing (1982)
You can’t imagine a list of the best horror movies in history without The Thing. Directed by John Carpenter, this brilliant film was a remake of 1951’s The Thing from Another World, but few people know about it. First, because Carpenter really made the concept his own, and second, because the original film was never exactly popular.
You can watch The Thing (1982) on Netflix and Prime Video.
9. Scarface (1983)
The original 1932’s Scarface was the pinnacle of a classic noir movie, following the same character on his way to build the most impressive criminal empire. But after Brian De Palma’s remake half a century later, barely anyone remembers the original: Al Pacino absolutely owned this movie. It’s his now, and who’s going to take it away?
You can watch Scarface (1983) on Hulu and Prime Video.

Bend the knee! This article contains major spoilers for the latest episode of "House of the Dragon."
Fiction has taught us that war typically begins after epic events and first strikes from which there's no coming back. "The Lord of the Rings" had the Battle of Helm's Deep usher in Middle-earth's second and decisive war against the Dark Lord Sauron. "Game of Thrones" kicked off the bloody War of the Five Kings after the one-two punch of King Robert Baratheon's death and Ned Stark's brutal killing, both of which plunged the Seven Kingdoms into blood and chaos. "House of the Dragon," however, has taken a noticeably different approach to its central Dance of the Dragons -- the civil war that's closer than ever to erupting in earnest among the Team Green and Team Black factions of House Targaryen.

For the last three decades, the multi-hyphenate Lisa Ann Walter, who began her career in stand-up comedy, made her mark as a character actor in films such as Bruce Almighty, Eddie and Shall We Dance? However, for most millennials, Walter is best known for playing Chessy, the beloved nanny in Nancy Meyer’s The Parent Trap. These days, nearly a quarter of a century later, Walter has emerged in the spotlight on ABC’s award-winning mockumentary Abbott Elementary, where she plays the Italian-American spitfire Melissa Schemmenti, a second and third-grade teacher at an underfunded Philadelphia public school. Here, she discusses the joys of playing the elementary school teacher and her own educational upbringing.
Deadline: You’ve returned to doing stand-up recently. How has it been going back on stage versus being behind the camera on Abbott Elementary?

Veteran actor Dennis Quaid has announced his support for former President Donald Trump in the upcoming 2024 presidential election.
Quaid, known for his roles in films like The Parent Trap and the upcoming biopic Reagan, shared his reasons for backing the Republican in an interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored.
Quaid, who had previously expressed reservations about the former president’s conduct, has now decided to support Trump and cited his performance in office as the primary factor. “As president, the only thing I liked about Trump was everything he did,” Quaid stated, with special praise for Trump’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic back in 2020.
The actor, who has described himself as an independent voter, said he initially hesitated to support Trump but has since changed his stance. “It just makes sense. I was ready not to vote for Trump until what I saw as — more than politics — I see a...

There is not a more divisive filmmaker working today than M. Night Shyamalan. Everyone can basically agree that his 1999 breakthrough "The Sixth Sense" is a supernatural classic, but after that? Slip on the brass knuckles and get ready to rumble. Shyamalan's early 2000s hits "Unbreakable" and "Signs," along with his 2017 comeback "Split," generate the least amount of friction, but aside from those three, it's so very on. You'll hear reasonable defenses for just about all of his films (save for the singularly atrocious "The Last Airbender"). While it's hard to sway folks on a movie as wackadoodle as "The Happening," it is only a good thing to have a major filmmaker knocking out provocative original movies for major studios.
Shyamalan's latest provocation, "Trap," will be his first project under his first-look deal with Warner Bros., and as is typically the case with a new Shyamalan movie, we know next to nothing about it.

Lisa Ann Walter admitted that Abbott Elementary being renewed for a fourth season was the first time she’s honestly felt “safe” in her acting career.
Though the actress is known for her beloved character Chessy in 1998’s The Parent Trap, she said in an interview with People magazine, “Just because you’re in a movie doesn’t mean you’re rich.
“I wasn’t a star. I was the woman that made you cry in The Parent Trap, and you’re still looking for a job the next week,” Walter explained. “So honestly, feeling safe? The season four pickup of Abbott.”
The actress shared that her role as teacher Melissa Schemmenti in the hit ABC sitcom allowed her to afford to take her four children on their first major family vacation — a trip to Italy last summer.

To combat the ominous atmosphere of the Ides of March, Netflix has another Lindsay Lohan film, “Irish Wish,” which is now streaming. The follow-up to “Falling for Christmas” in Lohan’s deal with the streamer to make two films, “Irish Wish” focuses on love, luck and a little bit of magic in the rom-com that arrives right before Saint Patrick’s Day.
Lohan portrays a smart book editor, except when it comes to matters of her heart. It takes a wish granted by a mystical woman out in the beautiful Irish countryside to get Maddie to realize that what she hopes and dreams for might not be what she wants or should want in life.
Featuring music from Lohan’s younger sister, Aliana, and a guest appearance from her brother, Dokota, the cast is stacked with other familiar faces as well. We’ve rounded up the “Irish Wish” cast and...

Always a bridesmaid, never a bride — unless, of course, your best friend gets engaged to the love of your life, you make a spontaneous wish for true love, and then magically wake up as the bride-to-be. That’s the pickle in which Lindsay Lohan finds herself in the upcoming romantic comedy Irish Wish.
Directed by Janeen Damian (Falling for Christmas), produced by Brad Krevoy and Michael Damian, and written by Kirsten Hansen, Irish Wish follows shy book editor Maddie Kelly (Lohan) on a supernatural, romantic journey of self-discovery. “She’s been ghostwriting for the writer she works for and she’s hopelessly in love with him, and she’s expecting him to love her back,” Lohan tells Tudum. But when reciprocation proves elusive, she takes matters into her own hands — only to find that romantic fantasies don’t always hold up to the harsh light of reality.

Lindsay Lohan may not like watching her own movies, but admitted she got emotional when she saw her son watching one of her beloved films.
The actress stopped by The Drew Barrymore Show on Thursday, where the host asked her whether she watches the films she had starred in. Drew Barrymore noted that she can’t because it feels “indulgent.”
While Lohan said she doesn’t seek out her movies, she will occasionally have one on in the background. “I mean, if someone wants to watch it and I’m there, I put it on and I’m like cooking in the kitchen or I have to run upstairs or I’m busy doing something else, ’cause it’s hearing my voice that I’m like, ‘Eh,'” she explained.
However, the actress recently caught her 8-month-old son Luai watching 1998’s The Parent Trap, where she played twins Hallie Parker...

After shooting to fame in films like Disney’s The Parent Trap, Freaky Friday and Tina Fey’s Mean Girls, there followed a well publicised period of instability after which she began the process of reviving her film career. Beginning with indie dramas like The Canyons, she then signed a deal with Netflix to produce and star in a series of films for the streaming service. It began with seasonal romcom Falling For Christmas, which was released in 2022.
Irish Wish is Lohan’s newest film produced under the deal, the synopsis reads as follows:

Dennis Quaid has signed on for a leading role in the upcoming Paramount+ series “Happy Face,” Variety has learned.
Quaid will appear alongside previously announced star Annaleigh Ashford. The series is inspired by the podcast of the same name from iHeartMedia and Melissa Moore, the book “Shattered Silence” written by Moore with M. Bridget Cook, and Moore’s true-life story.
In real life, Moore discovered at 15 that her father was the serial killer known as “Happy Face,” due to the smiley faces he drew on evidence where he bragged about his crimes. As an adult, she has changed her name and guarded her secret while her father has been serving life in prison.
The official description for the series states that it jumps off from Moore’s real life story. “Happy Face (Quaid) is an incarcerated serial killer who also is Melissa’s (Ashford) once-beloved father,” the description reads. “After decades of no contact,...

We all know what happened after 2004’s Mean Girls – Regina became a lacrosse champ, Karen used her psychic boobs to present the morning weather announcements, Gretchen co-opted the Cool Asians, and Cady floated in a newly repaired girl world… while keeping a beady eye on any emerging Young Plastics set to reinstate the old hierarchy. Now there’s a film of the musical of the film.
But to the actors who played them in the original? Oscar nominations, pop careers, Hallmark Christmas movies, prestige streaming dramas, LGBT+ firsts, and much more.

That's what director Mark Waters told Entertainment Weekly in 2014 about his reaction to reading Tina Fey's script for "Mean Girls." At the time, it was called "Homeschooled" but the title didn't matter. What mattered was what was on the page. Those words on those pages would inspire one of the most successful movies about the high school experience ever made.

2023 may have been a complicated year for the film industry, but it was a great year for movies. So, hey: No pressure, 2024.
As we sit here in the January doldrums, we can only look at the months and ahead and hope. Will those massively anticipated sequels live up to the hype? Will the latest releases from bona fide masters be worth the wait? Will everything that is supposed to come out this year actually come out this year? The anticipation is killing us.
This is far from a comprehensive list of every intriguing movie hitting theaters in 2024, but it does represent the titles that have the /Film team's attention already. Naturally, we expect dozens of incredible surprises to emerge from out of nowhere, especially as the film festival season starts to kick off. Fans of Judy Blume’s “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.” had to wait more than 50 years to see the classic children’s novel transferred to the big screen, but their patience was finally rewarded this spring. Written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig (“The Edge of Seventeen”) and featuring such A-listers as Rachel McAdams and Kathy Bates, the faithful film adaptation boasts an awe-inspiring Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 99% and was even described by its source’s author in a “Today” interview as “better than the book.” As the 2024 movie awards season begins, its best shot at a Golden Globe nomination lies with its 15-year-old star, Abby Ryder Fortson, who would be the fifth youngest contender in the history of her category.
At this point, Fortson is hovering directly outside of Gold Derby’s predicted six-person Best Comedy/Musical Actress lineup with the support of just over a quarter of our oddsmakers.
