Christopher Nolan Once Blamed Harvey Weinstein For Compromising Oscars Integrity. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Long before taking home the coveted Academy Award for Best Director for Oppenheimer, Nolan slammed the ceremony and blamed Harvey Weinstein’s aggressive 1999 Oscar campaign for compromising its integrity. Nolan believed Oscar compromised their core values and succumbed to the disgraced Miramax producer’s marketing campaign.
Christopher Nolan was first nominated for the Oscars in 1999 for the Original Screenplay of Memento, which he lost to Gosford Park. He was again nominated for Best Director for 2016 Dunkirk and again lost to Guillermo Del Toro for The Shape of Water. After a string of losses, despite making blockbuster films, Christopher Nolan finally won the Academy Award for Best Director for his WWII biopic Oppenheimer.

In Hollywood, where dreams are made and broken with the toss of a coin, sometimes it seems like the deck is stacked against even the most deserving actors. Take Tom Cruise, for example, who has charmed audiences with his megawatt grin and natural charisma. Yet, according to director Oliver Stone, the actor was unfairly denied the chance to clutch an Academy Award in his hands.
Cruise’s role in Born on the Fourth of July truly mirrored his acting chops. And thus, it seemed like he was destined for greatness and the coveted ‘Best Actor’ award at the Oscars. However, as fate would have it, the actor found himself up against a fierce competition that included the likes of Kenneth Branagh, Morgan Freeman, Robin Williams, and Daniel Day-Lewis. The latter ultimately took home the Oscar for his role in My Left Foot.

At one time, Harvey Weinstein was the most influential and powerful Hollywood producer. Through his production company Miramax, various award-winning films were made and every actor/actress wanted to be associated with him. The studio was responsible for Oscar-winning films like Pulp Fiction, The Crying Game, Good Will Hunting, and Shakespeare in Love.

In Steven Spielberg's 1998 war film "Saving Private Ryan," a poor beleaguered American mother saw her four sons -- Sean, Peter, Daniel, and James -- shipped off to fight during World War II. Not too long thereafter, the former three were killed in action. James Ryan (Matt Damon), the survivor, was stationed far away and was incommunicado. The U.S. Army, wanting to spare Mother Ryan the trauma of four dead sons (three was enough), assigned Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) to locate and rescue Private James Ryan and bring him home.
The bulk of "Saving Private Ryan" is told from the perspective of Captain Miller and his platoon. As they trek closer and closer to Private Ryan, their mission becomes more and more dangerous, and it won't be long before some of them begin getting killed in action as well. As one might imagine, Miller and his surviving platoon members...

Geoffrey Rush is one of the rare few who have achieved the triple crown of acting, meaning he has received an Emmy, Oscar and Tony Award (all three major acting awards) for his work (he refers to it as the Toe while waiting on his Egot).
Rush was an acclaimed actor in his native Australia for nearly two decades before the film “Shine” made him a known commodity in the rest of the world. He was 45 years old when suddenly his whole career changed and he was being considered for major roles in various mediums. That film about a pianist dealing with scars from his childhood won Rush the Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG Award for Best Actor. Those awards and acclaim launched him into a highly successful international career. Joseph Fiennes and Natascha McElhone have joined the cast of Amazon Prime Video’s “Young Sherlock” as series regulars.
Fiennes — the uncle of Hero Fiennes Tiffin, who plays Sherlock Holmes — has been cast as Silas Holmes, Sherlock’s father, who is described as a “scientist, explorer and self-made businessman.”
McElhone will play Cordelia Holmes, described as “Sherlock’s devoted mother, artist and matriarch of the Holmes clan.”
Fiennes is best known for playing William Shakespeare in 1998’s “Shakespeare in Love” and Commander Fred Waterford in the first four seasons of Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale.” His other prominent credits include starring in “The Mother” opposite Jennifer Lopez, the Cate Blanchett-led biopic “Elizabeth” and Jean-Jacques Annaud’s “Enemy at the Gates.” Most recently, he led the James Graham play “Dear England.” Fiennes is repped by the Artists Partnership and WME.

Judi Dench has enjoyed one of the world’s most glittering careers on both stage and screen, but she has hinted this week her time on film might be over for good.
The Oscar winner last appeared in the 2022 movie Spirited, but this week when she attended the Chelsea Flower Show in London, she revealed she had no other movie projects in the pipeline, telling a journalist: “No, no. I can’t even see!”
The Mirror newspaper reports that, when asked for further comment on Dame Judi’s remarks, her agent had nothing further to add.
Dench is 89 and suffers from macular degeneration of her eyes, a condition that affects 1.5 million people in the UK. The age-related version (Amd) affects more than 700,000 people and is the biggest cause of sight loss in the UK (according to the Macular Society).

In 2017, a number of sources confirmed that Malia Obama, the eldest daughter of Barack and Michelle Obama, had secured an internship with Harvey Weinstein, the former Hollywood producer being accused of s*xual harassment.
The 72-year-old was given a 23-year prison sentence after being found guilty in 2020 of first-degree criminal s*xual act and third-degree r*pe. However, in the case that served as a catalyst for the MeToo movement, New York’s highest court on Thursday overturned the Oscar-winning producer’s 2020 s*x crime conviction.

Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 r*pe conviction was overturned by the Court of Appeals in New York, marking a significant reversal in the historic #MeToo movement case. The former Hollywood producer was found guilty of two of the five felony counts of r*pe in 2020.
Given that his prior actions had resulted in an unfair trial, the court granted a new trial. Since February 2020, the 72-year-old has been housed in an upstate New York correctional facility, serving a 23-year sentence stemming from charges of r*pe and s*xual assault.

Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 rape conviction has been overturned by the New York Court of Appeals.
On Thursday, the court found in a 4-3 ruling that the judge in Weinstein’s trial — a landmark moment in the #MeToo movement that the 2017 allegations against him started — had shown prejudice by allowing women to testify about allegations that were not part of the case. The court has now ordered a new trial.
Weinstein, the Oscar-winning producer of “Shakespeare in Love” and “Good Will Hunting,” is serving a 23-year sentence at the Mohawk Correctional Facility, a medium-security prison in Rome, N.Y. He will remain imprisoned as he was also convicted of rape in Los Angeles in 2022 and sentenced to an additional 16 years in prison. However, Weinstein was acquitted in the Los Angeles trial on charges involving a woman who testified in his New York case.
Weinstein spokesperson Juda Engelmayer said in a statement: “We’re cautiously excited.

Ben Affleck wouldn’t be anyone’s top pick for the best Batman actor, but he is not entirely at fault for how his portrayal turned out. Affleck’s character appeared in some of the troublesome productions within the Dceu and he revealed that he hated every minute of being on set for these films. While he blames no one at DC or WB for his experience, he revealed that it was Matt Damon who came along and helped to seal the fate of his unsatisfying Batman role.
Ben Affleck was not happy in his Batman role in the Dceu
Ben Affleck debuted as Batman in Zack Snyder’s review-bombed film Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. He later appeared in a cameo role in Suicide Squad before leading the problematic theatrical version of Justice League. Interestingly, a solo film for the character never happened in the Dceu.

Ben Affleck may have quietly taken a crucial step in his acting career, something that not all of his fans will approve of. Affleck revealed that he no longer had fun playing the protagonist in films. After playing the Dceu’s Batman, Affleck has been largely focusing on playing the supporting characters in recent films. He added that the side characters gave him more scope for performance rather than his lead roles.

Ben Affleck was recently seen playing the secondary character, Count Pierre d’Alençon, opposite Adam Driver in The Last Duel. He also played the supporting character, Uncle Charlie, in George Clooney’s 2021 film The Tender Bar opposite Tye Sheridan.

[This story contains spoilers from the series premiere of Mary & George.]
In 2018, while flicking through the LGBTQ+ section of a copy of Time Out magazine, television producer Liza Marshall found a listing for a lecture about the sexuality of James VI and I, who reigned as the king of Scotland from 1567 to 1625 and, following the death of Queen Elizabeth I, also became the first Stuart king of England from 1603 to 1625. Despite having studied history during college, Marshall was surprised to discover that James had three significant relationships with men in his lifetime — the last of which forms the basis of the new historical drama Mary & George, which premiered Friday on Starz.
“It’s fair to say, at the beginning of the process, nobody wanted to make this show. No one knows anything about the Jacobean era,” Marshall tells The Hollywood Reporter of the 22 years that James spent as the ruler of both England and Scotland. “We know about Elizabeth I,...

The original Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey was easily one of the worst films of last year, but based on its outrageous premise and low budget, it managed to turn a profit. That of course means a sequel, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2, with all the usual claims of a bigger budget, more kills and better effects. Conspicuously absent were promises of a decent script or acting, however.
Taking place a year after the original, Blood and Honey 2 opens with the introduction of Owl, who looks more like a vulture than anything. He joins Pooh and Piglet in their fun and games, starting with the torture and killing of three scantily clad campers.
Elsewhere, Christopher Robin, now played by Scott Chambers, aka producer Scott Jeffrey,...

Gwyneth Paltrow is voicing her thoughts on superhero fatigue!
Marvel and DC’s consistent saturation of the movie release calendar has led many viewers to grow bored of the superhero genre.

Gwyneth Paltrow is sharing her thoughts on Hollywood’s push into superhero movies, saying, “You can only make so many good” films within that genre.
The actress appeared on the latest episode of Hot Ones, where host Sean Evans brought up a point Cord Jefferson made during his recent Oscar speech. While accepting his Academy Award for best adapted screenplay, the American Fiction director issued a plea for industry leaders, saying, “Instead of making one $200 million movie, try making 20 $10 million movies.”
“I absolutely understand where he’s coming from,” Paltrow said in response. “You want to have the best chance of having a strong Roi. People put a lot of money into these things and they want them to be profitable. But I think if I look at the industry as a whole, this big push into superhero movies…you can only make so many good ones that feel truly original,...

Gwyneth Paltrow confirmed on “Hot Ones” that a rumor about Bill Clinton sleeping through a screening of “Emma” at the White House is true. The 1996 Jane Austen adaptation was directed by Douglas McGrath and featured Paltrow in the title role. She earned critical acclaim for the performance, which continued her hot streak as one of the most recognizable actors of the 1990s indie film boom.
“Is it true that Bill Clinton passed out asleep during a White House screening of ‘Emma’?” host Sean Evans asked Paltrow.
“True!” Paltrow answered. “He was snoring right in front of me. I was like, ‘Wow, I guess this is going to be a real hit movie.’ But it was! So fuck you, Bill Clinton!
“Emma” was a box office success with nearly $40 million worldwide on a production budget under $8 million. The film picked up two Academy Award nominations, one for costume design and another for original score.

We are somehow now into the spring season, and while cinemas have been a tad dull, noteworthy new books have arrived at a frantic pace. Here are some that should be on your radar, and please note that our next column will include, among other treats, a lengthy rundown of recent noteworthy novels.
The Art and Soul of Dune: Part Two by Tanya Lapointe with Stefanie Broos (Insight Editions)
Dune: Part One, the first of Denis Villeneuve’s adaptations of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi classic, spawned a handful of painstakingly crafted, info-packed hardcover books. The Art and Soul of Dune: Part Two takes the same approach that made these earlier texts so satisfying. Tanya Lapointe was on set every day, and her accounts of the pre-production, production, and post-production processes are captivating. New in theaters is “One Life” starring legendary actor Anthony Hopkins as real-life British humanitarian Sir Nicholas Winton. Just three years ago he led French playwright Florian Zeller‘s feature directorial debut “The Father.” It not only managed to win him a second Oscar for Best Actor following “The Silence of the Lambs” back in 1991, but it also made headlines. One reason was how it was unconventionally the final award presented during the telecast that year because the sentimental favorite, Chadwick Boseman (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”), was widely expected to win posthumously. Hopkins pulled off a huge upset, though, and he wasn’t even there to accept it. How did that win happen? Here are five reasons.

Christopher Nolan has been the recent recipient of the Oscar for Best Director and Best Picture for last year’s war biopic Oppenheimer. The film had a dream run during awards season this year, winning the top awards at the ceremony. However, this was Nolan’s second nomination as a director, with his first coming a few years ago for the war drama Dunkirk.
The World War II drama about the evacuation of British soldiers from Dunkirk Beach lost the Best Director Award to Guillermo Del Toro, who won for Shape of Water. Back then, Nolan had reportedly been hopeless about the ceremony and blamed Harvey Weinstein’s aggressive Oscar campaign for Shakespeare in Love for ruining the Oscars.

Ben Stiller puts a major part of his time into his career as a director these days and he has some amazing projects in his portfolio. Stiller directed acclaimed films like Tropic Thunder and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. He also served as the director and executive producer of the AppleTV+ series, Severance. However, there were a few scripts he had to turn down for reaching such height in his filmmaking career and some of them turned out to be huge successes.

Rather than fulfilling general expectations by becoming the first film since “Slumdog Millionaire” (2009) to win eight Oscars, “Oppenheimer” left the 2024 Academy Awards with seven, including the coveted Best Picture prize. Although its eventual haul was far from the most impressive ever, it still comfortably ranked as the biggest winner of the night and officially joined a stellar, eight-decade-spanning roster of 12 movies that each merited a lucky seven competitive academy honors.
In addition to the top award, “Oppenheimer” racked up victories for Best Director (Christopher Nolan), Best Actor (Cillian Murphy), Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, and Best Original Score. Of the dozen films that preceded it in winning seven Oscars, the one that comes closest to matching its exact haul is “The Bridge on the River Kwai” (1958), which took Best Adapted Screenplay rather than Best Supporting Actor (Sessue Hayakawa).

Over Hollywood’s century-long history, women have played an integral part both as actresses on the screen, as well as creators behind the scenes. Many have fought to establish themselves in a male-dominated world, and have earned their place in history alongside the best, even managing to show out at the most prestigious awards ceremony — the Academy Awards. In celebration of Women’s History Month 2024, and the recent 96th Oscars ceremony, following is a list of 26 women who have earned eight or more Oscar nominations. Scroll through our photo gallery above (or click here for direct access).

The 96th Academy Awards are over and have left us with the Oscar winners for this year’s award season. Undoubtedly, all eyes were on Oppenheimer as the film was expected to win big at the ceremony, which it did. However, what would have happened if Oppenheimer ended up losing to some other film in the Best Picture category? Well, it goes without saying that if this happened, it would’ve caused a major upset among fans of the film industry since Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece was a fan favorite nominee.
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
Things like this have happened before. Viewers have been enraged by the fact that other films ended up taking the Best Picture award home rather than the film they believed was more deserving. For example, in 1999 Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan was defeated by Shakespeare in Love. Thanks to this, the audience’s disappointment was off the charts.

Gwyneth Paltrow was in hair and makeup at home during the 2024 Oscars, but she made sure not to miss the chance to see her longtime Marvel co-star Robert Downey Jr. win his first Academy Award. Paltrow shared a video to her Instagram story as she rejoiced over Downey taking home the Oscar for best supporting actor thanks to his acclaimed role in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.” She watched the moment on her laptop. As they say in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: “Whatever it takes.”
Paltrow is an Oscar winner herself, having won the best actress trophy at the 1999 Academy Awards for her role in “Shakespeare in Love.” She’s been friends with Downey for well over a decade, after the two were cast as Tony Stark and Pepper Potts in 2008’s “Iron Man,” which kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The first film to win Best Picture at the Oscars was “Wings” in 1928. Until 1950, the Oscar was awarded to the studio or production company. Since then, it has gone to the credited producers and after five of them won for “Shakespeare in Love” in 1998, a cap of three has been set.
At the first Oscars, there were three Best Picture nominees. In each of the next three years, five films contended. The category was expanded to eight in 1933, to 10 in 1934, and to 12 in 1935, before going back to 10 in 1937. In 1945 it was cut to five and stayed that way until 2009 when it once again was raised to 10. Since 2011, there have been a varying number of nominees from five to 10, with champs including “The Shape of Water,” “Green Book” and “Parasite.”

Lily Gladstone got teary eyed watching Scott George and the Osage Singers’ powerful performance of “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)” from Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon at the 2024 Oscars.
The performers joined forces to collectively bang a drum, dressed in traditional Osage attire, as the women sang.

George previously shared how special the nomination was with The Hollywood Reporter. “With Lily, it’s not surprising to me that she’s been nominated. She’s great. With us, if you really wanted to look at it, our music is probably thousands of years old. For it to be recognized maybe for the first time ever, it’s overwhelming in that sense,” the drummer, singer and composer said.

It’s always nice to see the deserved films get recognition on the night of the Oscars, but there have been a more than few instances when things don’t go as fans imagined. While started as the ceremony to celebrate the best films, over the course of 96 years, there have been several notable snubs, including the Academy’s decision to crown Green Book over BlacKkKlansman.
But the most infamous snub in the Academy’s history, which changed the Award landscape for all the years to come, involves Miramax’s Shakespeare in Love, which defeated Saving Private Ryan.

Believe it or not, the Academy Awards have a connection to Kate Middleton, Prince William, and the British royal family. Sure, the pair attend award shows and movie premieres from time to time and rub shoulders with actors. But one Oscar-winning movie is said to have impacted what royal titles the couple received. Ahead, the award-winning film that, in a way, helped determine their titles.

Los Angeles, March 10 (Ians) ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ star Lily Gladstone, who’s a huge fan of Cate Blanchett, recently told ‘People’ magazine that she was disappointed when her “ultimate actress” did not win the Academy Award for her role as Elizabeth I in Shekhar Kapur’s 1998 biographical period drama, says The Hollywood Reporter.
“I have idolised Cate Blanchett since I was a teenager.
