Hinds’ long-awaited LP Viva Hinds isn’t coming out until Sept. 6, but the Spanish alt-rock duo of Carlotta Cosials and Ana García Perrote have been slowly rolling out singles from it all year. The latest one, “Superstar,” centers on the pain of being ghosted after a longterm relationship.

Spanish indie rock outfit Hinds have announced a new album, Viva Hinds, which is set to drop September 6th via Lucky Number. The band has also confirmed a North American tour and dropped the Beck-featuring single “Boom Boom Back.”
Viva Hinds serves as somewhat of a rebirth for the act, as songwriters Carlotta Cosials and Ana Perrote faced numerous Hinds-related struggles throughout the last few years. They split with their management, label, drummer, and bassist, succumbing to something of a creative rut as a result. Four years after their last release The Prettiest Curse, though, Cosials and Perrote are set to return with a brand new project that seeks to rejuvenate Hinds and, notably, houses the band’s first Spanish language songs.

Match #1: Noam Dar def. Dijak The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
The numbers game of the Meta-Four proved dividends for Noam Dar as Supernova 11 conquered the much larger Dijak thanks to Lash Legend, Jakara Jackson, and Oro Mensah. Dijak laid into the Scottish Superstar, crushing him with brutal chops, strong strikes, and back-breaking tosses across the ring. Dar was even on the receiving end of a ring-shaking sit-out chokeslam. Dar managed to rally and hit a Fisherman Buster on the larger Dijak, parlaying that move into an armbar that incapacitated his arm. After trading incredible shots, Dijak became distracted by Mensah who jumped on the apron, allowing Dar to hit Nova Roller to pick up the huge win.
My Score: 3.5 out of 5 Match #2: Lola Vice def.

Since the ’80s, several pro-wrestling giants have attempted to transition into the realm of movies, but only a few did manage to prevail on the silver screen. And similar was the case for John Cena for nearly a decade, when he started out in showbiz back in the 2000s but was met with little success, as his movies failed to make it big at the box office.
While it seemed his acting career might’ve been heading towards the same track as Hulk Hogan, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and Triple H’s run in showbiz, one change ended up salvaging his career.

Cody Rhodes has much to celebrate. The “American Nightmare” won the 2024 WWE Royal Rumble and punched his ticket to the main event of WrestleMania 40. It’s the first time in more than 25 years since someone, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, has done it back-to-back. This came a few days after the news broke the popular superstar would forever be immortalized on the cover of the upcoming “WWE 2K24” video game. Adding even more meaning to the occasion is the fact players who pre-order the standard edition will receive the “Nightmare Family Pack.” It’s a bonus pack of content featuring four playable superstars including two alternate versions of Rhodes’ past personas (The “Undashing” masked Cody and Stardust) and the 1976 version of his late father, Dusty Rhodes, and one of the WWE Hall of Famer’s biggest rivals in “Superstar” Billy Graham. Netflix has ordered another Spanish film, My Dearest Señorita, and unveiled a first look at upcoming dram series Superstar at an event in Madrid.
My Dearest Señorita, produced by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, is an adaptation of the 1972 Oscar-winning film of the same name directed by Jaime de Arimañán, who co-wrote the script with José Luis Borau starring José Luis López Vázquez.
The 1970s film was a romantic drama that explored themes of intersexuality, and was one of very few to tackle sexual orientation in General Franco’s ultra-conservative Spain. It won the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film at the 1973 Oscars.
“My Dearest Señorita is an adaptation,” said Calvo and Ambrossi in a statement. “Times have changed, and we believe it is a good time to revisit this story, a story of gender identity and wonderful, mainstream love. The creative challenge is how far we can update it without losing the essence.

Vince McMahon resigns from Tko amid battery and sex trafficking allegations, ending 40+ years at WWE
The WWE’s annual Royal Rumble isn’t until tonight but already the company has seen a major elimination, as Vince McMahon has officially resigned from his position at Tko following a lawsuit launched by a former employee over alleged battery and sex trafficking.
Vince McMahon bowing out as executive chairman and board of directors member stems from Janel Grant suing the sports entertainment icon over the aforementioned claims. More specifically, she says she was offered a job at WWE that soon enough put her in the position of sexual acts not just with McMahon but with other company employees, including former Head of Talent Relations John Laurenitis. Grant also alleges that she was used as a bargaining chip to lure a former talent back to the ring; while the person has only been described as “both a UFC and WWE talent”, that’s about all the WWE Universe needed...

As comedian Will Ferrell walked across the magnificent stage of The Kennedy Center to accept the greatest honor an America funny person can receive, The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, something happened that made us all remember why he is getting this prestigious honor. The award instantly slipped from Will’s hilarious fingers, shattering this legendary humorist’s bust all over the floor. An obvious gag, that was so damn fitting to what Will represents in the history of the art of doing silly stuff. Without breaking character for a second, Will hilariously tries to pick up the pieces as the world just sat back and laughed… but not laughing at him, we were laughing with him. The appeal of Will Ferrell comes from his innocent “I don’t give a f*ck” attitude that elevates simple stupid jokes to performance art. As Mr. Ferrell once said, “What I...

Welcome to this review of this past Monday’s episode of WWE Raw, right here on Nerdly. Let’s see what went down on this week’s show!
Match #1: Tommaso Ciampa def. Finn Bálor The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
After Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano took out an interfering Damian Priest, Johnny Wrestling grabbed Bálor’s feet as he was suplexing his opponent back into the ring. This helped Ciampa fall onto the Judgment Day Superstar and pick up the three-count. As a result, #DIY moved one step closer to an Undisputed WWE Tag Team Title opportunity.
My Score: 3 out of 5 Match #2: Kofi Kingston vs. Ludwig Kaiser (Double Count-Out) The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
One week after Giovanni Vinci’s injury, a match between Ludwig Kaiser and Kofi Kingston ended in a double count-out. Although Kingston initiated a post-match brawl, Kaiser struck with a thumb to the eye.

Superstar is my favorite new-to-me film of 2023. What's yours?
As the year draws to a close, it's time for reflection and hopes for the year to come. All over film publications, lists dominate, cataloging the best pictures of 2023, rushing to proclaim their champions before the ball drops. Here, however, let's do another exercise. Looking back at the past twelve months, I like to think about my favorite first-time watches of years gone by, classics and other sorts that were new to me, even if they were well known to everybody else.
I think of Brian De Palma's Body Double, a perverse predilection I discovered on my travails through Erotic Thrillers. Then, there was Labyrinth of Cinema, Nobuhiko Obayashi's swan song, and a wild counterpoint to Nolan's Oppenheimer. While I wrote about those two, I have yet to mention my affection for Jafar Panahi's rebellious...

This article contains spoilers for "Barbie."
What if I told you that Greta Gerwig's 2023 summer blockbuster "Barbie" wasn't the first movie that explored the complex feminist issues with Mattel's world-famous doll?
"May December" director Todd Haynes started as an experimental filmmaker who made waves in the underground cinema scene back in the '80s with his stop-motion music doc, "Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story." Haynes' film might not have been as record-breakingly successful as Gerwig's was, but it helped jumpstart what became an incredibly successful career for the director. "Barbie" was the first corporate-sanctioned film that explored the doll's complicated relationship with women and their bodies, but Haynes technically did it first back in '87. Mattel and Warner Brothers executives were even concerned that Gerwig might get a little too inspired by Haynes' dark take on the toy.

During a roundtable discussion for The Hollywood Reporter, Gerwig admitted that “Barbie” producers were “nervous about the possibilities” of bringing the Mattel doll to the big screen in part because of Haynes’ use of the dolls in “Superstar.” Haynes’ experimental 1987 short film focused on singer Karen Carpenter’s battle with anorexia, with Barbie dolls used to convey the star’s disintegrating state in the public eye. Richard Carpenter sued over the licensing of The Carpenters’ music, and the film was never properly distributed.
“I was going to say, you made the original ‘Barbie’ movie,” Gerwig said to Haynes. “There was a bootleg of it at Cannes.”

Exclusive: Harland Williams (Dumb and Dumber) has wrapped production on Wing Man, his sophomore feature behind the camera, in which he also stars opposite comics Russell Peters (The Opening Act) and Jamie Kennedy (Malibu’s Most Wanted).
Others rounding out the cast of the indie comedy, written and directed by Williams, include Evan Marsh (Workin’ Moms), Shiva Negar (The Cleaning Lady), Kayla Wallace (When Calls the Heart) and Dylan Flashner (The Card Counter).
The film watches as Bob (Marsh) loses his fiancée Terri (Negar) to the wealthy Kazeem (Peters), hiring the Wing Man, Turk (Williams), to help him get her back. Subsequently, though, the Wing Man faces off against his arch enemy — the other Wing Man, Eddie (Kennedy) — who has other plans for Bob. Todd Haynes has come a long way since self-distributing his unauthorized cult classic “Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story” in 1988, but he’s still grateful for the people who helped him turn the short film into the foundation for one of the most celebrated careers in independent filmmaking.
Haynes, whose Cannes hit “May December” is one of the most acclaimed movies of 2023, was honored with the Vanguard Award at the 2023 IndieWire Honors. When Haynes took the stage to accept the award at NeueHouse Hollywood on Wednesday, December 6, he reflected on the initial boost that he received from influential New York film critics and the ways that critics continue to shape his career.
Haynes recalled his attempts to screen “Superstar,” which used Barbie dolls as puppets to tell a satirically biographical story about pop music legend Karen Carpenter, in New York after graduating film school. He credited critics with responding to his...

In any form of adaptation of real-life events, even the direct ones, the formation of a barrier between fact and fiction turns out to be the most crucial indicator by which to measure the qualitative aspects of the said adaptation—more so in the case of crime-oriented cases. So often, it happens that for mass appeal, reality is distorted in adaptations, thereby trivializing the impact of a crime on the lives of the people involved. In that regard, May December, a movie adaptation of one of the most sensitive scandals in the United States—the infamous case of Mary Kay Letourneau, a middle-aged woman who seduced one of her minor students and went on to have a family with him—was always going to be the most scrutinized entry. Most importantly, the way Mary Kay as a person became a household ‘topic’ during the late 90s due to the media...

Taylor Swift performs two surprise songs for the acoustic set during every show of her Eras Tour and she has already performed a ton of incredible tracks during the first U.S. leg.
The 33-year-old singer is getting ready to continue the South American leg of the tour and you might be wondering what songs are remaining.
Taylor made a rule that she’s allowed to repeat songs if she messes them up the first time or if they’re from Midnights, her most recent studio album.
It’s unclear if Taylor is going to continue these rules for the remainder of the tour as she’ll likely reach the point where she has no more songs left to perform!

Few directors show their cinematic influences as readily as Todd Haynes. Just watch one of his movies, and the filmmakers that helped shape his style — Douglas Sirk and Nicolas Roeg, to name two — become incredibly apparent. His stylized melodrama and favored themes of social taboos and celebrity carry the DNA of both directors. But at the same time? His work is entirely his own.
Born in Los Angeles during 1961, Haynes studied art at Brown and cinema at Bard College, where he made the short film that first brought him notoriety. Made entirely with dolls, 1987’s “Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story” tells the story of the titular popular pop singer and her struggles with anorexia. Its unauthorized nature, unflattering portrayal of Carpenter’s brother and music partner Richard, and unlicensed use of the Carpenters’ music made it the subject of a lawsuit, and it remains withdrawn from circulation. Available only via bootleg,...
