It’s almost August, which means two things: It’s the last month of the summer movie season, and we’re into the traditional “Dog Days of Summer” when studios often dump a lot of crap in hopes that moviegoers, at least those not taking their last-minute vacations, might go see them. Oddly, this month we also have a number of original films with just two franchise reboots, and a couple movies based on popular books and one video game. Read on for Gold Derby’s August 2024 box office preview.
“Alien: Romulus” (20th Century – Aug. 16)
Uruguyan filmmaker Fede Alvarez (“Don’t Breathe”) is the latest director to take over this long-running horror sci-fi franchise that began all the way back in 1979 with Ridley Scott‘s “Alien.” Scott is still involved as a producer after directing “Prometheus” and “Alien: Covenant” in 2012 and 2017, respectively, the former being the highest-grossing movie in the franchise with $402.4 million worldwide.

When it came to reworking the horror genre with a modern twist, M. Night Shyamalan achieved great success with his breakthrough film in Hollywood, The Sixth Sense. He followed up this Oscar-nominated effort with the equally impressive Unbreakable in 2000, and Signs in 2002, which further cemented his place as filmmaker with a niche approach to horror and supernatural narratives.

As the law of averages always dictates, his subsequent efforts in The Village and The Happening did not garner the kind of responses he had would have hoped for. Despite these films crashing at the box office, fans still remember many of his iconic scenes from his early films. One particular scene in Signs still makes viewers’ blood curdle even after 22 years of its release.

After taking the world by storm with The Sixth Sense, which made M. Night Shyamalan a household name, his next film, Unbreakable, while a success, was not held in the same regard as the ’99 horror. In order to prove he was not a one-trick pony, the acclaimed director started working on his next horror thriller, Signs, which many still consider his scariest work yet.
Initially perceived as joyous and almost childlike in its point-of-view, the Mel Gibson-led sci-fi thriller ended up being a nightmare for an entire generation of audience.

M. Night Shyamalan is a rare director known for his unique story structure. The director’s films have become known for the ‘big twists’ that change the trajectory of the narratives. Films like The Sixth Sense, Signs, The Village, Unbreakable, The Visit, etc. are examples of Shyamalan’s great works, and many scenes from these films have become iconic in pop culture.

Gladiator doesn’t seem like the type of movie that demands a sequel. Sure, it won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and sure, director Ridley Scott is still going strong more than two decades later. But the story of Maximus had a definitive arc and ending. As portrayed by Russell Crowe, the general-turned-gladiator Maximus died after leading a revolt against Rome and the corrupt Emperor Commodus (a wild Joaquin Phoenix).
So what is the point of a sequel 20 years later? Yes, the empire limps on for a few more centuries, but that’s not enough to justify a direct sequel to a standalone story from the previous film.
Fortunately, the trailer for Gladiator II clarifies the connection between the first film and the sequel. The trailer opens with narration from Lucius (Paul Mescal), the nephew of Commodus in the original movie and former heir of the Empire before the death of his father.

M. Night Shyamalan is only a month away from releasing his latest horror feature Trap starring Josh Hartnett. The story of a serial killer on the backdrop of a pop concert, Trap takes a loving father-daughter duo as they navigate their way through, well… a trap. Shyamalan is best known for his out if the box stories that get fans hooked without even trying. And with Hartnett returning for a leading role after so long, fans are understandably excited.

This spoiler-free review is based on all six episodes.
Movie superheroes are intrinsically tied to comic books. The language, the shape of the narrative arcs and the visuals are nearly always either inspired by or reacting against the genre as established in four colours. Even supposedly grounded and gritty takes like M Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable use Bruce Willis’s poncho to signify a cape, with every shot framed to look like a comic book panel.
The most faithful screen realization of that imagery is usually the lavish CGI cinema spectacle, with TV all too often seen as its poor relation. The truth is, TV superheroism is now a genre all of its own, with its own tropes, rules and language that have for the most part left the comics far behind.

Director M. Night Shyamalan has earned quite a reputation as both a visionary filmmaker and the king of twist endings, and oh- how could I forget that he also makes some very whack movies? It’s interesting to think that the same genius who made The Sixth Sense also made The Happening. However, one thing that cannot be debated is that this man has also made some extremely awesome movies. One of those movies has been begging for a breakdown of this show since the very beginning. An unmistakable classic that unknowingly started a trilogy and uprooted comic book cinema in a very unexpected way. Today, we’re talking about Unbreakable.

Superhero movies have surged in popularity over the past decades, with the MCU standing as one of the largest and most lucrative cinematic universes today. While many modern superhero films lean towards PG-13 ratings with action-packed thrills and intrigue, some embrace elements of horror and gore.

Hollywood and nepotism are two things that go hand in hand it seems. While the concept of nepotism is not new, recently it has gained more traction as more and more people are pointing out how every other actor that gets inducted into the Hollywood regime turns out to be a son, a daughter, a niece or nephew of another Hollywood personality.

British filmmaker Paul Raschid is developing a new interactive film. Deadline reports Raschid's latest project, The Run, is an "interactive horror-thriller" that puts the fate of its protagonists into the viewer's hands. Ouch, poor them. If you watched Black Mirror's Bandersnatch or enjoy visual novels, you'll have an idea of what to expect.
Raschid is no stranger to this hybrid genre, having previously worked on interactive titles like the hostage-thriller The Gallery, the romantic comedy Five Dates, and its sequel, Ten Dates. Both rom-coms function like visual novels and are available on platforms like Steam, Apple's App Store, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.

In 2002, M. Night Shyamalan had already done the impossible in Hollywood: He was a director who became a household name. At the time, you couldn’t probably only say that about a handful of directors, the usual suspects: Spielberg, Scorsese, Tarantino. Maybe a few others. But after the blockbuster success of 1999’s The Sixth Sense, which became one of the biggest movies of all time, not to mention a Best Picture nominee, Shyamalan was now a brand. One year after The Sixth Sense, Shayamalan brought us Unbreakable, a brooding, suspenseful drama about a man who’s burdened with a great responsibility he doesn’t even know about. To say it was an unusual take on the superhero genre would be an understatement, and as hard as it is to believe, superhero movies were not a “thing” when Unbreakable came out. So the movie, while respected and destined to build a loyal following,...

But as much as he is a passionate filmmaker, he is also a passionate cinephile: having absorbed the best that contemporary cinema has to offer since childhood, Tarantino bases his work on the most recognizable tropes and directorial styles, creating a refined pop culture mishmash. And as a huge film buff, Tarantino shared a list of the 20 films he 'admires the most' in a conversation with Sky Movies in 2009.
20 Must-Watch Movies According to Tarantino
Before we get to the list itself, it's important to note that it's not in order of importance, but in alphabetical order. Except for the number one, because for Tarantino it is 'favorite movie that has come out in the last 17 years.' Besides, as he pointed out, this is one of the few movies he would personally dream of directing.

It’s the end of the world, and Mulligan has turned the apocalypse into one big joke.
Created by 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt alums Sam Means and Robert Carlock, the animated comedy series about Matty Mulligan — the everyman who becomes president after Earth is destroyed by aliens — is getting a Part 2. The upcoming 10 episodes include a party cruise ship full of new characters, lavish musical numbers, guest stars, and a newly invented meat substitute that takes on a (terrible) personality.
Means and Carlock are frequent collaborators of Tina Fey — who also happens to voice Dr. Farrah Braun, the last scientist on Earth — which means they’re experienced in packing half-hour episodes with jokes on jokes. “It’s the kind of show we’ve been writing for years — 30 Rock, Kimmy Schmidt, Great News,” says Means, “but with the palette and the scope that you can...

Michael Jackson was the King of Pop and every king has a court. It’s no surprise he worked with several other megastars across genres over the course of his life. Some of those collaborations are classic and others are tragic.
1. Justin Timberlake
“Love Never Felt So Good” is a posthumous disco duet with Justin Timberlake. It’s not as good as Jackson’s classic disco tracks but it has an infectious, cherry energy. It feels more like a prequel to Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” than anything else.
The song has some great timing. It came out in 2014. 2013 saw a huge revival of disco music with hits like Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines,” Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky,” Bruno Mars’ “Treasure.” while it was a song from the vaults, “Love Never Felt So Good” felt practically modern! The tune appeared on the posthumous album Xscape. Xscape is not Thriller,...

Amazon Prime Video has ordered a series adaptation of the Michelle Frances novel “The Girlfriend” with Robin Wright set to star and direct, Variety has learned.
In addition, Olivia Cooke, Laurie Davidson (“Mary and George”), and Waleed Zuaiter (“Gangs of London”) will star alongside Wright.
The official description of the series states: “Laura (Wright) wants for nothing. She has a glittering career, a loving husband, Howard (Zuaiter), and, above all, she has Daniel (Davidson), her precious only son. But Laura’s seemingly perfect life is blown apart when Daniel brings home Cherry (Cooke), the girlfriend who changes everything. After an uncomfortable first meeting, Laura grows convinced that Cherry isn’t who she says she is. While no one else can see what she sees, Laura refuses to stand by and watch Daniel be deceived. M. Night Shyamalan hit the jackpot with his 1999 movie The Sixth Sense, which established him as a brand in suspense-thriller movies. While pitching the story to different studios, Shyamalan wanted them to fulfill a few of his conditions. The director knew that he was making a risky gamble since he was only known in the industry for writing a few spec scripts at the time. However, his gamble paid off as studios were fighting each other to bid for his film.

Shyamalan’s story revolved around Haley Joel Osment’s Cole who claims to see dead people in the movie. He has the caring psychologist Malcolm Crowe, played by Bruce Willis, guiding him through his newfound abilities. However, Crowe doesn’t realize that he’s helping himself by helping the kid.

M. Night Shyamalan is a visionary filmmaker, who has amazed audiences with his idea in films and television alike. From The Sixth Sense to the Unbreakable trilogy, his movies have managed to go deep into the psyche of his audience with immaculate storytelling and intricate plot details. Currently, the director is gearing up for his upcoming venture, Trap, starring Josh Hartnett.

M. Night Shyamalan's filmography has been uneven, but the director has always returned with a new hit after a failure, which in itself makes him a unique auteur. On August 9, 2024, the director's next project will be released, titled Trap, which is already fascinating viewers with its trailer alone.
In honor of this, we offer a list of Shyamalan's films to watch and revisit – not including The Sixth Sense, which needs no introduction.

Several couples with their children come on vacation to a paradise island that ordinary people don't know about. The beach turns out to be amazing, but terrible things happen on it: first the tourists find the body of a girl, and then the children suddenly start to grow up by leaps and bounds. Time passes faster on this beach, and it is impossible to get out of here: any attempt to do so results in losing consciousness.

M. Night Shyamalan is one of the pioneer directors of our times, whose movies transcend our general perception. And among all his movies, the Unbreakable trilogy – Unbreakable (2000), Split (2017), and Glass (2019), are three movies that have weaved a story beyond comprehension. With intricate plot points and details, the trilogy is one of Shyamalan’s very best works to date.

Now, the director is back with yet another mystery thriller, Trap, which is set to release in August this year. The first trailer of the movie, starting Josh Hartnett, was recently released, and fans are already making up theories about what we can expect.

Usually, when it comes to M. Night Shyamalan’s movies, fans have to wait until the very end to figure out the twist. But this time it felt rather easy for netizens, as they seem to have cracked the code to his upcoming movie Trap. Starring Josh Hartnett in the lead role, the film recently dropped its first trailer at CinemaCon 2024, when people started pointing out the twist in the story.

The trailer showed Josh Hartnett and his teen daughter attending a concert when things start getting strange as the event turns out to be a setup to catch a serial killer on the loose named The Butcher. But shockingly, the trailer ended with a revelation that implied Hartnett was the serial killer. Considering how M. Night Shyamalan gave out the suspense himself, fans deduced the real twist in the story.

Guess who's back ... back again? With no disrespect intended towards Slim Shady, he's got nothing on the run that M. Night Shyamalan is currently on. The horror-focused writer/director might remain as divisive as ever, but he's all but put to rest any doubts about whether he still has the juice or not (as the kids say). After wrapping up his "Eastrail 177" trilogy -- that's "Unbreakable," "Split," and "Glass" for the uninitiated -- and getting the franchise fever out of his system, Shyamalan has focused almost exclusively on bold adaptations like "Old" and "Knock at the Cabin." Meanwhile, on the television side of things, he brought the Apple TV+ series "Servant" to an unsettling end and has even found time to watch his daughter Ishana Night Shyamalan get ready to make her feature directing debut with the upcoming "The Watchers."

Writer/director Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile is aiming for an October 18th theatrical release date – and with that date just six months away, Paramount decided to start building the hype for Smile 2 during their panel at CinemaCon today. They showed a teaser trailer to the people who attended their panel, and in the audience was JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek!
Lance describes what he saw in this teaser: “Story appears to be set around a Taylor Swift type of mega-star artist (Naomi Scott) who gets sucked into the curse of Smile. The sequel has a bigger budget and slicker look, seems to be bigger in scope. There was a very cool scene where a crowd of people under control of the entity are in a tight backstage hallway chasing Naomi Scott, all of the smiling in that creepy way. Plot-wise, it doesn’t give much away.

There is not a more divisive filmmaker working today than M. Night Shyamalan. Everyone can basically agree that his 1999 breakthrough "The Sixth Sense" is a supernatural classic, but after that? Slip on the brass knuckles and get ready to rumble. Shyamalan's early 2000s hits "Unbreakable" and "Signs," along with his 2017 comeback "Split," generate the least amount of friction, but aside from those three, it's so very on. You'll hear reasonable defenses for just about all of his films (save for the singularly atrocious "The Last Airbender"). While it's hard to sway folks on a movie as wackadoodle as "The Happening," it is only a good thing to have a major filmmaker knocking out provocative original movies for major studios.
Shyamalan's latest provocation, "Trap," will be his first project under his first-look deal with Warner Bros., and as is typically the case with a new Shyamalan movie, we know next to nothing about it.

Last week, Denzel Washington's thriller "The Little Things" topped the Netflix charts after having originally debuted in 2021 and failing to make much of an impact. It was a nice little post-release bump for the film, which, though it wasn't all that well received initially, had grand ambitions to do something different with the crime thriller genre by providing no actual answers to its central mystery. Now, a week later, "The Little Things" is maintaining its dominance on the Netflix charts. But all the while Denzel has been reigning supreme, two other films have been threatening him to usurp him.
Back in 2017, director M. Night Shyamalan debuted "Split," a self-financed stealth sequel to his 2000 film "Unbreakable." Rather than marketing the film as such, he kept the revelation that this was a follow-up to his earlier, Bruce Willis-led thriller, under wraps. These days, actress Robin Wright is likely best known for her six seasons as Claire Underwood on “House of Cards.” Her character’s trajectory on Netflix’s often-rancid take on underhanded politics saw her ending up becoming the 47th President of the United States after co-star Kevin Spacey was forced to leave the show due to allegations of sexual misconduct. Wright collected six Emmy nominations as Best Drama Actresss and two for being an executive producer on the show. Wright also earned directorial stripes while calling the shots behind the camera for 10 episodes as well.
That experience led her to make her directorial film debut with “Land,” in which she played Edee, a woman filled with suicidal thoughts after suffering a tragic personal loss. She decides to go off the grid while moving into a grungy cabin in amongst the scenic mountains of Wyoming. Her attempts to chop wood, hunt...

During the pandemic, most of us apparently watched Chris Hemsworth's actioner "Extraction" more than anything else, with the 2020 film becoming the most popular Netflix original movie at the time. But I remember being much more excited for "The Little Things."
This neo-noir crime thriller from writer-director John Lee Hancock seemed to have it all — especially if you happened to be a '90s kid with fond memories of "Seven." The trailer for "The Little Things" promised Denzel Washington in full jaded cop mode as Kern County Sheriff's Office deputy Joe Deacon, tracking down a serial killer in early-'90s Los Angeles with the help of a much younger, idealistic L.A. cop in the form of Rami Malek's James Baxter. It might have sounded a tad formulaic, but I'll take any noir-tinged thriller promising to give us a peek under California's carapace and reveal the seedy underworld therein.
This neo-noir crime thriller from writer-director John Lee Hancock seemed to have it all — especially if you happened to be a '90s kid with fond memories of "Seven." Mercer died Feb. 12 at his home in South Pasadena after a battle with younger-onset Alzheimer’s, his wife, Tegan Jones, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Sam Mercer, who produced seven M. Night Shyamalan films including The Sixth Sense, headed Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light & Magic and was location manager on several classic 1980s pics, has died. He was 69.
His wife Tegan Jones told Deadline that Mercer died February 12 of younger-onset Alzheimer’s.
“He was the best big brother I could have hoped for,” Shyamalan said in a statement. “He made every movie a family, and I’ve tried to emulate that in every film since.”
Mercer moved to Los Angeles from Weston, Ma, to work in the movie industry. He began his career as a location manager on such 1980s gems as Stripes, National Lampoon’s Vacation, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, Peggy Sue Got Married and The Witches of Eastwick before moving to Walt Disney Studios.

Girls5eva, which is headed into its third season this week, tells the story of four women who were members of a briefly popular girl band and are now back together, two decades later, in a second attempt at success. The show pokes fun at the absurdity of the real pop culture landscapes in both the ’90s and today, but the cast and crew want to be clear: The laughs are made with love.
“The show, for us, has always been this beautiful kind of healing,” star Renee Elise Goldsberry tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It gives refuge.”
The Tiny Fey-produced comedy is written and created by Meredith Scardino (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and stars Goldsberry, Sara Bareilles, Paula Pell and Busy Philipps.
Part of that healing, Goldsberry and her castmates say, comes from their regard for Scardino’s source material.

From December through February, we followed the progress as writer/director Parker Finn assembled the cast for a sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here) – a project we’re referring to as Smile 2 until we hear otherwise. The cast includes Naomi Scott of Aladdin and Charlie’s Angels, Lukas Gage of The White Lotus and You, Rosemarie DeWitt of La La Land and the Poltergeist remake, Dylan Gelula of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Dream Scenario, Raúl Castillo of Army of the Dead and Knives Out, Miles Gutierrez-Riley of The Wilds and On The Come Up, and Kyle Gallner (Red State), reprising the role he played in the first movie. The film is aiming for an October 18, 2024 theatrical release date, so we knew it had to be going to production soon, if it wasn’t already filming – and now Gage has confirmed that production is already underway.

Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender recently released on the streaming platform on February 22nd, 2024. The live-action series which is a remake of the popular 2005 animated show, has been at the center of a lot of discussions prior to its release. From speculations about changes to key characters to modification of plotlines, not all the hype surrounding the show has been positive.

Netflix, in an effort to raise excitement and expectations, chose to keep the audition process under wraps by giving away very little information regarding the casting of characters. This approach led to quite a bit of confusion even for prospective actors like Ken Leung. Not being aware of the original series, Leung mistook the ‘Avatar’ in the title as a casting call for James Cameron’s epic masterpiece.

They’re gonna be famous 5eva! Girls5eva‘s finally back as Season 3’s trailer arrives ahead of the show’s official Netflix debut on Thursday, March 14. The show from creator Meredith Scardino and 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt executive producers Tina Fey and Robert Carlock will settle into its new home after originally debuting on Peacock where it streamed for two seasons. Girls5eva centers around the members of the titular late ’90s girl group – Dawn (Sara Bareilles), Wickie (Renée Elise Goldsberry), Summer (Busy Philipps), and Gloria (Paula Pell) – as they continue to work on their comeback tour after having reunited and recorded their new album Returnity. (Credit: Netflix) The only catch is that they don’t have a plan, tour manager, or venues secured for such an endeavor, forcing the ladies to pile into a van and hit the road to promote their album and get back on top.

Dylan Gelula may be best known for playing the role of Xanthippe Voorhees in 13 episodes of the Netflix series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt… but since I haven’t gotten around to watching that show yet, where I know her from is the recent Nicolas Cage movie Dream Scenario, where her character has a very memorable interaction with Cage. Since Gelula’s section of the movie is also the part that sticks with me more than any other, I’m glad to hear (via Deadline) that she has been cast in writer/director Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here) – a project we’re referring to as Smile 2 until we hear otherwise.
