April 25, 2024 – A trio of stellar actors give voice to the featured members of the Dickens family as Academy Award winner Kenneth Branagh portrays Charles Dickens, Oscar nominee Uma Thurman plays Catherine Dickens and Golden Globe nominee Roman Griffin Davis gives life to Walter Dickens in Mofac Animation’s upcoming The King of Kings, an animated family film inspired by a little-known short story by Charles Dickens depicting the life and times of Jesus Christ.
Renowned for his big screen adaptations of William Shakespeare and Agatha Christie tales, Branagh changes gears to portray one of the greatest authors of the ages for The King of Kings. As Charles Dickens, Branagh portrays a man conflicted between his burgeoning career and his role as father to the Dickens clan and, in particular, his youngest son Walter (Davis). The Academy’s tendency to award trophies to Holocaust movies has long been whispered about — and even occasionally joked about by cheeky comedians.
In 2009, shortly after Kate Winslet won a Golden Globe for her performance as a former Auschwitz guard in “The Reader,” presenter Ricky Gervais pointed to her in the audience and deadpanned, “I told ya, do a Holocaust movie; the awards come.”
Winslet, who would go on to receive an Academy Award for her part in Stephen Daldry’s film, had several years earlier appeared on Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s HBO comedy “Extras” as an actor who stars in a film about the Holocaust in the hopes that it will earn her an Oscar.
The night of the Globes, Winslet laughed at Gervais’ ribbing, as did many in the crowd. It was a much a jab at the industry as much as it was at her.

The best Tom Hiddleston roles are spread across stage, television, and film. While he gained international recognition for portraying Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the English actor’s versatility extends to different genres, including comedy. Captivating audiences with his exceptional performances has been Hiddleston’s strong suit since his 2001 screen debut. Tom Hiddleston’s celebrated career began in the late 1990s on stage before his television debut in 2001. During the budding stage of his career, Hiddleston played minor roles in television films such as Conspiracy and Armadillo. His film career which began on the set of Unrelated (2007) marked the...

The new Showtime limited series “Fellow Travelers” received rave reviews and is now being embraced by awards groups, with three bids at the Critics Choice Awards and a pair of nominations at the Golden Globes. This eight-part period piece is an adaptation of the 2007 book of the same name by Thomas Mallon. Centered on fictional characters Hawk Fuller (Matt Bomer) and Tim Laughlin (Jonathan Bailey), it tells an expansive love story inspired by the breakthroughs and setbacks American gay men experienced throughout the second half of the 20th century.

Horror fans will recognize Adam Marcus as the director of Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday and the co-writer of Texas Chainsaw 3D, two divisive but oft-discussed entries in their respective franchises. He recently returned to the genre to helm Secret Santa, a holiday horror-comedy streaming exclusively on Screambox.
The final installment in our three-part interview with the raconteur focuses on Secret Santa and the trials and tribulations of independent filmmaking. He also teases several projects that are in the works, including a monstrous collaboration with special effects legend Robert Kurtzman.
Secret Santa was born out of Marcus and his writing partner/wife Debra Sullivan’s frustration with the lack of creative control they had on their two previously produced screenplays, 2013’s Texas Chainsaw and 2015’s Momentum. “Artistically, it just started to feel really hollow. Nick Oliveri has announced two career-spanning compilations, N.O. Hits at All Vols. 8 and 9, continuing his running series of the same name. Both arrive January 19th via Heavy Psych Sounds.
As a teaser, Oliveri offered up the Vol. 8 opener “Chains and Shackles” — the first official release of a 2010 collaborative track with Slash.
The song originates as an outtake from Slash’s 2010 self-titled album and is finally receiving a proper release on Oliveri’s comp. His unhinged snarls and Slash’s frenetic riffing call back to the stoner-punk that the former contributed to the early Queens of the Stone Age albums. The track was even produced by Eric Valentine, so that sound is definitely there.
“Slash wrote the music and Eric Valentine and myself wrote the words,” said Oliveri in a press release. “I feel the song is hard-driving and it has the right amount of uncensored dirt, filth, sex,...

This Star Trek: Lower Decks article contains spoilers.
Okay, leaving aside the super-racist episode “Code of Honor,” we’re all agreed that “Shades of Gray” is the low point of Star Trek: The Next Generation, right? Sure, there’s still “Masks” and “Rascals” and I get why people don’t like “Sub Rosa” (I said what I said), but “Shades of Gray” is hardly an episode. Riker gets an alien infection, Dr. Pulaski sticks a doo-hickey on his head, and then he… rewatches highlights from the first two seasons. And that’s because “Shades of Gray” is that most dreaded product of 1980s syndicated television: a clip show.
Fortunately, clip shows have become a relic of the pop culture past rendered unnecessary in our always-on digital age. But Lower Decks never forgets, so it’s no surprise that the series would do its own version of a clip show. And...

In the era of post-truth, where privacy is a commodity up for sale, information is simultaneously valuable and unreliable. Adding to that a mechanism that can bypass the most stringent scrutiny to circulate fabricated narratives, the very real threat of man-made global catastrophe might seem imminent. MCU’s latest entry released on Disney+, Secret Invasion, adapted from the source comic series of the same name, examines this scenario in an almost uncharacteristically grounded manner, which feels like a breath of fresh air after the unnecessary levity introduced throughout the over-the-top nature of previous storytelling phases.
In Marvel Comics, Secret Invasion holds a special place as one of the most important narratives dealing with issues of political unrest, identity crisis, general mistrust, and propaganda—issues that couldn’t be more relevant at this given point in time. To make the live-action adaptation even more intriguing, in the Disney+ series, superheroic shenanigans...

English actor Thomas William Hiddleston — aka Tom Hiddleston — made his TV debut in the 2001 British TV film ‘The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby.’ And although we didn’t get to see his character — Lord — a lot, the appearance opened several doors for Hiddleston. The same year, he was featured in another TV film, “Conspiracy.” However, his fame seems to have come following his role as the Marvel Cinematic Universe character Loki — the God of Mischief.
Sadly, last year, Hiddleston hinted that his tenure as Loki was concluded, and someone else would replace him. In an interview with Variety, he said, “I’m a temporary torchbearer. I’ve always thought that. It’s a great role. It’s an archetype, the trickster god, the agent of chaos. I’m just here interpreting that for the time being. Loki has been here for centuries and will be here for centuries more,...

Made-for-tv movies have developed from their Hallmark stereotype in recent years, thanks to the rise of companies such as HBO. Although these films feature lower budgets and smaller casts than larger productions, they offer directors and actors greater freedom – leading them toward more successful results.

This post contains spoilers for "Star Trek: Picard" season 3, episode 6.
As it crosses into the back half of its third and final season, "Star Trek: Picard" finally brings back Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton). It's good to see him again: let's acknowledge that. Episode 6, "The Bounty," also hints at the end that season 3 might finally give Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) something more to do than yelp about how her son "just vomited all over engineering". Back then, all we had to worry about in "Picard" was one shaky subplot with Worf (Michael Dorn) and Raffi (Michelle Hurd).
In episode 6, the subplot merges with the main plot. Dorn acquits himself admirably, but he continues to be saddled with dialogue like, "Breakups on my homeworld seldom end without bloodshed," as Worf and Raffi beam aboard the USS Titan and take us on a subsequent trip to Daystrom Station for an Easter egg hunt,...

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Is Finally Delivering On The Promise Of A Classic Next Generation Episode
This post contains spoilers for "Star Trek: Picard," season 3, episode 5, "Imposter."
Someone call a Code 47, because we need to open a secure channel about the latest episode of "Picard" season 3. The show has gone to some familiar places this season — so many of them, in fact, that its continuing mission seems to be boldly going where "Star Trek" has gone before. By way of an example, in episode 5, "Imposter," Ro Laren (Michelle Forbes) shows up out of the blue after 29 years, and we learn through expository dialogue that, in the interim, she's repeated her history of being court-martialed, imprisoned, and then set free to rise through the ranks of Starfleet again.
Ro's return draws on the penultimate episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," and thanks to the combined acting skills of Forbes and Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard, their scenes crackle with drama and help ratchet up the tension...

Some new faces are set to hit Middle-Earth. “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” has added seven new cast members for its second season, which is currently in production in the United Kingdom.
Gabriel Akuwudike, Yasen Atour, Amelia Kenworthy, Nia Towle, Ben Daniels, Nicholas Woodeson, and Sam Hazeldine have been cast in the series, which serves as a prequel to J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy series. Hazeldine replaces Joseph Mawle, who played the Ork leader Adar in the first season of the series; a reason for the casting change was not given. The other new cast members’ roles are currently being kept under wraps, but all of them join the show in a recurring capacity.
Akuwudike has appeared in the TV series “Hanna,” “Ridley Road,” and “War of the Worlds,” along with the films “1917” and “Brexit.” Atour was a cast member in Season 2 of Netflix’s “The Witcher,...

“The Conspiracy” is a documentary that traces the history of anti-Semitic conspiracy theory, and it’s a film you may be surprised that no one has made until now. The subject, of course, couldn’t be more timely. The film arrives at a moment when these insidious ideas, which seem to have the life of Hydra heads (you can cut them off but can’t kill them), are reasserting their way back into politics and culture. Kanye West and his crackpot tweets grab headlines, but it’s important to note that Ye’s point-of-view mirrors the mindset of increasing numbers of right-wing true believers in Europe and America. That gives “The Conspiracy” value as a weapon against injustice.
Beyond that, though, there’s a vital and disquieting fascination to seeing a film connect the dots of hate, fear, and false narrative that have demonized Jewish people by turning the conspiracies...

Conspiracy truthers can be the worst. Sure, it's important to question authority and make up your own mind about things, but some people exist purely to be contrarian and turn their quest for knowledge into an excuse to provoke others. It's one thing to believe in conspiracy theories, and entirely something else to insist that everyone else believe them too. Truthers don't just want to share their beliefs, they want to convert everyone. Unfortunately, it appears that even in a future where all food can be replicated and most diseases can be treated with the push of a button, there are still truthers trying to poke holes in what's accepted as fact and they are just as annoying as the ones in our own world. You may be surprised to learn that the first Hollywood film that dealt with the Holocaust was released during the height of World War II. The 1944 Andre De Toth film, “None Shall Escape” shows a group of Polish-Jews gunned down by the Nazis while they are being forced into boxcars for deportation. Over the subsequent decades, the horrors of the Holocaust have been depicted on the big screen in such classics as 1959’s “The Diary of Anne Frank”; 1982’s “Sophie’s Choice,” for which Meryl Streep won her first Best Actress Oscar; and Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-winning 1993 masterpiece “Schindler’s List.”

In 2021, “WandaVision” star Paul Bettany made history as the first man to be Emmy-nominated for a lead performance on a Marvel TV series, thus laying the groundwork for 2022 hopefuls Tom Hiddleston (“Loki”), Oscar Isaac (“Moon Knight”) and Jeremy Renner (“Hawkeye”). Although he lost the last Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor race to Ewan McGregor (“Halston”), he may now get an immediate second shot at the same prize based on his work on “A Very British Scandal.” Luckily for him, there is ample precedent for back-to-back bids in this category.
The first man recognized twice in a row for TV movie and/or limited series roles was Mickey Rooney. His example has been followed by 16 others, beginning with George C. Scott. Next came Hal Holbrook and Laurence Olivier, the latter of whom then became the category’s first three-time consecutive nominee with his 1975 bid for “Love Among the Ruins.”

Since his breakthrough performance as Mr. Darcy on the 1995 BBC miniseries “Pride and Prejudice,” Colin Firth has made stiff romantic characters his specialty, even going so far as to embody the Austenesque Mark Darcy in the Bridget Jones film trilogy. He has, however, also demonstrated plenty of range over the last quarter century, and his newest role is perhaps his most demanding yet. The 61-year-old’s distinctively dark portrayal of convicted wife killer Michael Peterson on the HBO Max limited series “The Staircase” could earn him his first Emmy, which would nicely complement the Oscar already in his awards collection.
Firth won the favor of the film academy 11 years ago for starring as King George VI in “The King’s Speech.” This was his second consecutive try for a Best Actor Oscar, as he was first recognized for 2009’s “A Single Man.” His first and only Emmy nomination to date came...

Did you catch all of these Star Trek references and Easter eggs in Discovery's "An Obol For Charon"?
The fourth episode of Star Trek: Discovery’s second season is all about death, and perhaps, in some senses, rebirth.
The title of the episode, is “An Obol for Charon,” which references the Greek mythological god Charon and the specific way you bribe him. In order to get your soul taken to the right place in the underworld, you’re supposed to give Charon an “Obol” or payment. In ancient Greece, this sometimes meant putting money in the mouths of dead people. In this Star Trek episode it seems to reference the price everyone is paying for flirting with death, or in the case of the Spore Drive, traveling to the “underworld.”
Anyway. Beyond the big Greek Mythology lesson, the latest Disco also referenced a ton of existing...

Darren Criss spent five seasons charming viewers and critics with his performance as Blaine, the charming and clean-cut crooner on Ryan Murphy‘s hit musical-comedy “Glee.” Now, Criss is turning the tables on audiences by playing a character who is anything but charming: serial killer Andrew Cunanan in Murphy’s new FX anthology series, “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,” and industry observers are taking notice. In her review of the series, USA Today’s Kelly Lawler wrote that Cunanan is “brought to life with disturbing energy and commitment by Criss, who has decidedly left his wholesome ‘Glee’ character in the dust.” Will Emmy voters take notice of Criss’s killer performance?
“The Assassination of Gianni Versace” follows Cunanan’s destructive path which led him to murder famed designer Gianni Versace (Edgar Ramirez) on the footsteps of his Miami home. Throughout the series, we see Cunanan’s path to Versace,...

It was the coupling heard 'round the world, and now it's the breakup heard 'round the world. When Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston got together at the beginning of the #SummerofHiddleswift, it was near impossible not to leer. Just look at these two—they were tailor-made (or should we say Taylor-made) for celebrity exhibitionist wonder. They're beautiful! They fell in love at the Met Ball (maybe)! They frolic on rocky beaches! Everyone everywhere instantly became enamored with the idea of their love. Except for those who didn't...because those who didn't were too busy being paranoid. And that's how we came to know the Hiddleswift Conspiracy...

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

In a truly inquiring film of complex ideas, the quiet, subtle Colin Firth has the ability to lead the spectator into the heart of mystery
It's tempting to buy the notion that Colin Firth has "arrived" – not least because he is as amiable as he is deserving. As it is, he has won the Volpi Cup at Venice for his George Falconer in A Single Man. He added to that the Bafta, and he must be in with a chance at the Oscars on Sunday. Indeed, on another page of this paper, I have declared that he "should" win that Oscar for A Single Man. However, not to endorse that endorsement, I have to admit that my opining for Firth was part of a liking for the actor and a sympathy for the man who did so much to overcome, ignore and resist the quite remorseless and disastrous affectations with...

Our two resident Emmy experts — forum moderators Chris "Boomer" Beachum and Robert "Rob L" Licuria (AwardsHeaven.net) — also agree on the five men who will contend for best actor in a TV movie or mini-series. They anticipate Kevin Bacon ("Taking Chance"), Brendan Gleeson ("Into the Storm") and Kevin Kline ("Cyrano de Bergerac") earning their first Emmy recognition when nominations are announced on Thursday. Both of them think Ian McKellen ("King Lear") will land his fourth Emmy nod while previous champ Kenneth Branagh ("Conspiracy") should reap his fourth Emmy bid in this category for "Wallender." And unlike the lead actress in a movie/mini race, both Boomer and Rob think this could be a competitive category with seven other actors in the mix. Best Movie/Mini-series Actor

Branagh Repelled By Nazi Holocaust Planner
Actor Kenneth Branagh's most difficult role was playing Adolf Hitler's "soulless" henchman Reinhard Heydrich in the new TV movie Conspiracy. Heydrich was the mastermind behind a 1942 meeting of top Nazis, which sealed the fate of the European Jewish population. This pivotal meeting is the subject of the new Home Box Office movie, which also stars Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci. And Branagh admits that Heydrich was a real challenge for him and ultimately one of his most disturbing acting experiences. He says, "Heydrich was unique for the ferocity and the cruelty of what he did, and the ruthless efficiency with which he did. In my preparation I thoroughly researched him, but I found that when it came to playing him, the inner man seemed invisible. Our scriptwriter, Loring Mandel, tried to do a psychological profile of Heydrich, looking for elements of behavior that may not appeal but perhaps lend to understanding his character, whether it be hatred of parents, a childhood trauma, some physical or mental disability, something that might illuminate his motives. Nothing seemed to make conventional psychological sense. His utter lack of compassion, lack of pity, revealed a man who has a buried conscience. There is something purely evil about him that is absolutely repellent and I'll be very happy not to wear his uniform to play him ever again."...
