Over the past 20 years, Sandra Oh has been a darling of the Emmys, accumulating 14 nominations across multiple genres. But surprisingly, she hasn’t won yet. This year she’s nominated for Best TV Movie for producing “Quiz Lady,” in which she also stars with Awkwafina as sisters trying to pay off their mom’s gambling debts. It looks like a close race as none of the five films in the category have any other nominations, so knowing that this is a chance to finally award Oh her first Emmy might tip the scales in her favor.

The nominations for the 76th annual Emmys have dropped. There were some records broken, a lot of surprises including 36 first-time nominees and some major snubs. And a lot of fun facts and trivia about this year’s nominees. FX’s period drama series “Shogun” earning 25 Emmy nominations this year, the most of any dramatic series this year. The original NBC miniseries adaptation of the James Clavell best-seller which starred Richard Chamberlain and the legendary Toshiro Mifune received 14 nominations and won for limited series, costume design, graphic design and title sequences. Hulu’s “The Bear” broke the record for most nominations for a comedy series earning 23 nominations. NBC’s “30 Rock” had held the record with 22 nominations since 2009. Native Americans finally have some representation in this year’s nomination with Lily Gladstone and Kali Reis earning outstanding supporting actress nominations for Hulu’s “Under the Bridge” and HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country.

Some things about the Emmys are predictable. Every awards observer figured that FX’s Shōgun and The Bear would get lots of nominations today, and they did: 25 and 23, respectively, the latter a record for the comedy categories in the case of The Bear.
But unexpected things, both good and bad, always happen when the Emmy nominations are announced, and this year’s list was no different. Let’s run through some of those.

Elsbeth, a show about a lawyer who catches criminals with the NYPD, was not only a hit with viewers, who immediately fell in love with the charming title character, but it also seems to have paved the way for a show that had not been greenlit by CBS for years.
CBS loves its procedurals, but for some reason, the procedural Einstein, from the creators of the cult classic Monk, hasn't been able to get on the air since 2019. Now, on its third try, a remake of the original German series of the same name is in development.

NCIS fans may not be happy with this news, but CBS appears to have some schedule space (and money) for welcoming one more police procedural drama to its collection, making it clear that there’s officially no way for NCIS: Hawai’i to ever come back to the screen.
According to Deadline, the network just returned again to its long-planned project titled Einstein which comes as CBS’ own adaptation of a German series of the same name.
Initially released back in 2017 and canceled after three seasons in 2019, Einstein follows Felix Winterberg, Albert Einstein’s great-great-grandson who actually nobody knows about.
Still, Felix’s origin might be quite a curious matter for his surroundings since his genius mind, inherited from his world-famous relative, allowed him to become the youngest professor of theoretical physics in a prestigious German university.

And here we are with the perfect recommendations for viewers of this modern Columbo-like series: here are 5 shows you'll definitely enjoy watching while waiting for season 2.
1. Flight Attendant (2020-2022)

Last year, the nominees for both Best Drama Guest Actor and Best Drama Guest Actress were drawn from just two shows: “The Last of Us” and “Succession.” The former reaped a lucky seven nominations while the latter nabbed five. We don’t think any show will manage to snag that many nominations across these two drama guest acting categories this year but we do think one show will land more bids than any other: Amazon Prime Video’s “Mr. And Mrs. Smith.”
The spy-thriller series, created by Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane, is a reboot of the 2005 movie starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Glover stars in the lead role opposite “Pen15” actress and creator Maya Erskine. The two multi-hyphenates feature as a pair of spies (John and Jane) who must pretend to be a couple and complete missions together. The episodes each depict the stages of a relationship through the prism a spy thriller.

Rest easy, Resident Alien fans. The show has officially been renewed for a fourth season!
It was a close call at NBCU about the show's future, so this is excellent news.
The big difference is that the show will no longer air on Syfy but on the sister NBCU site, USA Network.
We all wish USA's Blue Sky programming were still going today.
They've been out of scripted originals for a couple of years, but with the announcement of The Rainmaker last month, they're back in business.

Deadline reported earlier this year that the Resident Alien renewal was questionable, and they're breaking the news about it today, just as they expected by jumping networks.
At the time, they also said there would be a significant budget reduction, so when we return, things may not be the same in Patience, Colorado.

BET wants some Emmys.
In a year where major streamers and legacy networks dominate the Emmy conversations, BET Media Group, which includes BET+ and BET Studios, has had a record-breaking year for its critically acclaimed content, such as Lee Daniels’ racy sitcom “The Ms. Pat Show,” the drama thriller “Average Joe” and the dark comedy “Diarra From Detroit.” All in all, the legacy broadcast media network has submitted in over 35 Primetime Emmy categories, the most in its history.
BET+ surprised many in 2022 and 2023 when it picked up back-to-back nominations for “The Ms. Pat Show” director Mary Lou Belli. A veteran in the TV business, she’s helmed notable episodes of “Sister, Sister,” “Monk” and “NCIS.” After dropping its fourth season on May 23, Belli is up for consideration once again for the premiere episode “I’m the Pappy,” alongside co-creator and showrunner Jordan E. Cooper for “The Book of Denise” episode.

Erich Anderson, the familiar character actor who made his film debut in Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, played Keri Russell’s father on Felicity and recurred on shows from Steven Bochco, has died. He was 67.

“We ended on such a high note, we were very proud of the final two episodes and how the series wrapped up,” reflects Tony Shalhoub on the emotions that were involved in revisiting a character he had bid farewell to so perfectly 15 years ago. For eight seasons, the Emmy Award winner portrayed detective Adrian Monk on the series “Monk,” a character who returns in the Peacock original film “Mr. Monk’s Last Case.” The star – who also serves as executive producer – says the whole team wanted to “match that or outdo what we did at the end” of the show, which felt like a “daunting proposition.” Watch our exclusive video interview.
Shalhoub makes his return to the role look effortless, but it was important to the actor that he not play the character exactly as he had when he bid the detective farewell in 2009. He says that he and the rest...

Erich Anderson, racked up over 100 credits during a screen acting career that stretched from 1983 into the 2020s, but he may be best known for playing the role of Rob in the 1984 slasher classic Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter. A character out for revenge, Rob looked like he had a shot at being able to take down hockey-masked killer Jason Voorhees for good… but when Rob finally caught up with Jason, things did not go well for him at all. Among Friday the 13th fans, Rob has become a favorite due to the fact that he seems so cool and capable at first, but then whiffs his shot at vengeance in a major way. Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, as the eligibility period closes Friday, we discuss two last-minute limited/TV movie hopefuls.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re at the end of 2024 Emmys eligibility, and not without some last-minute entries. This week, Netflix added “Eric” to its stable of limited series contenders — joining fellow May release “A Man in Full,” as well as “Ripley,” “Griselda,” “Painkiller” and presumed frontrunner “Baby Reindeer.” Meanwhile, over at HBO, “The Great Lillian Hall” is here, a TV movie that puts Jessica Lange in contention for Best Limited/TV Movie Actress. It’s funny: Neither of these projects feels like they connected with critics and the late drops are always dicey when there are too many shows to watch in the first place.

HBO broadcast its first women’s boxing bout, between Kali Reis and Cecilia Brækhus, in 2018. Just six years later, Reis is one of the stars on HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country,” where she plays Detective Evangeline Navarro alongside Jodie Foster. That could very well be the first time any HBO lead was first seen on the pay cabler in a boxing match.
“What’s really great about this whole journey is that things that are so far fetched are like not impossible in some part of my brain that understands that it’s a possibility,” Reis tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast. “And I think that’s one of the many things that keeps me grinding so hard.”
In the series, Reis plays Evangeline Navarro, a half-Dominican state trooper in Ennis, a fictional town in rural northern Alaska. Reis spoke to the Awards Circuit Podcast about her interpretation of...

Even though it’s not the guest stars who make the show, but the regular cast, there is some magic about one-episode characters played by someone the audience knows and loves. Just like every major procedural on TV that has been running long enough, NCIS had its fair share of actors, hosts and even political figures joining the team.
Here are 8 biggest names who have joined the NCIS family throughout the years, and where exactly in the show you can find them.
Troian Bellisario
Best known for her portrayal of Spencer Hastings in Pretty Little Liars, Bellisario appeared in two episodes of NCIS as Agent McGee's sister, Sarah. Her appearance on the show before her big break is easy to explain, as Troian is the daughter of Donald P. Bellisario, the mastermind behind both Jag and NCIS.

Amateur sleuth shows used to be popular in the pre-csi era of television.
These series showcased detectives who were not police officers, were often quirky, and could best the cops at solving murders -- if they could get them to listen.
You're right if you think that sounds exactly like CBS' Elsbeth. Elsbeth has more in common with amateur sleuth series of the past than with the show it spun off from, The Good Wife.
Elsbeth is a modern take on classic shows like Columbo, Murder She Wrote, and Diagnosis Murder. Most shows it owes a debt to are no longer on television, but streaming services have given them new life.
Elsbeth Heralds the Return of Amateur Sleuth Shows
Amateur sleuth shows are part of the cozy mystery genre.
Nowadays, they've fallen out of favor -- these mysteries mostly air as movies on the Hallmark channel.

“After 14 years to get the cast back together, the team back together, it was a blast,” declares Randy Zisk about directing the 2023 Peacock original film “Mr. Monk’s Last Case,” a follow-up to the original series starring Tony Shalhoub. “Everyone was so excited to do it. It came together pretty well and pretty easily.” We talked with Zisk as part of our “Meet the Experts” TV directors panel. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Created by Andy Breckman, “Monk” originally ran from 2002 to 2009 on USA, winning Shalhoub three Emmys for Best Comedy Actor for playing the title detective who suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder. “Mr. Monk’s Last Case” brings him back to solve the murder of his stepdaughter’s fiancé, for which a ruthless billionaire (James Purefoy) is the prime suspect. Monk is reluctant to return to solving crimes, however, as his mental illness has intensified and he’s contemplating suicide.

“Monk” is the epitome of the classic blue-sky show. Its mysteries are gripping, but the show’s characters are inviting — always giving viewers a reason to laugh. That’s still the case with Peacock’s reunion movie “Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie.” And yet, there’s something surprisingly dark about the state of obsessive-compulsive detective Adrian Monk when we catch up with him, post-pandemic.
“At this point we find Monk is really in a in a dark, dark place,” star Tony Shalhoub tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast. “He’s in a deep hole. His team is not really close by and he’s kind of lost his purpose. And (exec producer) Andy (Breckman) presented this idea that Monk was entertaining thoughts of suicide. It hit us hard in the beginning. We thought, ‘geez, we’ve gone dark in the show before, but not this dark!'”

He appeared in such TV shows as Arrested Development, Monk, The Shield, Judging Amy and The Kingpin, among others. He also was on the talk show Lopez Tonight.
Survivors include his wife, Arlene, and children.
Tributes to Moreno were posted online by his friends:
I am devastated. I am gutted today. One of my favorite people in this world has passed away. The Godfather of comedy is gone.
Rudy Moreno has left the world! He was not only a great comedian, he was an even better friend.
I will honor your name forever! I love you Rudy!

Given its warm critical reception and past PGA and SAG Award notices, it makes sense that “Mr. Monk’s Last Case” has maintained a massive lead over its Best TV Movie competitors ever since we opened our 2024 Emmys predictions center. However, because the original “Monk” was never even nominated for Best Comedy Series during its eight-season run, the one-off Peacock continuation can’t exactly be considered a shoo-in. In truth, it faces quite a few strong challengers, including the laugh-packed Netflix offering “Unfrosted.”
Hours before its May 3 premiere, “Unfrosted” rose above its 100/1 Gold Derby odds and pulled ahead of both “Finestkind” and “Genie” to become this year’s seventh most likely TV movie nominee. Its next immediate challenge is passing sixth place runner “Scoop” (also from Netflix), which is currently a predicted nominee among our editors and experts.

There are two types of people who enjoy crime dramas: some prefer their shows to be brooding and dark, the gorier the better, while others tend to enjoy the mystery element mixed with a heartwarming comedy. Elsbeth is a sure-fire hit for the second group, but it's not the only show you might want to check out.
Here are 8 other shows that will give you as much pleasure as Elsbeth without having to wait weeks to see a new episode.
White Collar (2009-2014)
Starring Matt Bomer as charismatic con man Neal Caffrey, the show follows his journey to become a great detective after getting out of prison in exchange for helping the FBI's White Collar Crimes Unit. The show is light-hearted, yet features some of the best crime cases you will ever see on television. Plus, there is a chance that it will get a reboot soon enough!

AMC Networks’ plans to submit the zombie spinoff “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” as a limited series for the Emmys have been killed.
The cable network had announced plans to submit the six-episode spinoff, created by Scott M. Gimple, Danai Gurira, and Andrew Lincoln, for outstanding limited or anthology series at the Primetime Emmys. However, Variety has learned exclusively from two sources with direct knowledge that the show is ineligible to submit in the category.
In 2021, the Television Academy defined what constitutes a limited or anthology series, stating that the story must be resolved within its season without any ongoing storylines. This criteria affected past winners, such as the second season of “The White Lotus,” which was required to compete as a drama due to Jennifer Coolidge’s recurring character. According to the Academy’s ruling at the time, “the reappearance in a subsequent ‘season’ of one character...

Before you make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best TV Movie, take a look through our photo gallery featuring the telefilms most likely to land in this year’s lineup. As it stands, Peacock’s “Mr. Monk’s Last Case” (a continuation of the eight-time Emmy-winning 2000s comedy series “Monk”) is comfortably leading the race.
“Mr. Monk’s Last Case” would be the first Peacock movie ever nominated in this category, as would “Genie” or “Shooting Stars.”
Last year, Hulu’s “Fire Island” and “Prey” were both passed over in favor of The Roku Channel’s “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” but the streamer could soon avenge those losses with “No One Will Save You,” “Quiz Lady,” or “Self Reliance.”
Netflix – which won this award for three “Black Mirror” installments (2017-2019) as well as “Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square” (2021) – can now achieve its fifth victory with “Scoop” or “Unfrosted.”

After Monk ended its run on USA in 2009, creator Andy Breckman never stopped taking notes and coming up with movie ideas for Tony Shalhoub’s alter-ego. But nothing ever quite worked out, recalls Breckman on a panel at Deadline’s Contenders Television — that is, until the pandemic “nudged things along for us.”
That’s when Shalhoub and his wife Brooke Adams made a four-minute film that depicted Monk during the lockdown, which helped to get the ball rolling for Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie. The flick, which dropped in December on Peacock, follows the San Francisco-based detective with obsessive-compulsive disorder returning to solve one last, very personal case involving his beloved stepdaughter Molly.
“At first it sounded kind of risky,” Shalhoub said. “We wanted to raise the stakes, we did not just want to come back with episode 126. We wanted this to be more special. We wanted...

What happened to Tate on Days of our Lives? That’s a question Days fans are asking after the character looked a lot different today.
It’s been a big week for Tate following Holly (Ashley Puzemis) finally admitting the drugs she overdosed on were hers.
Although Tate was cleared of all charges, the teen hasn’t been staying out of trouble, thanks again to Holly.
Despite strict orders from his parents, Brady (Eric Martsolf) and Theresa (Emily O’Brien), to stay clear of Holly, Tate can’t seem to quit her.
Just as this teen romance begins to heat up even more, there’s been an actor switcheroo in the role of Tate Black.
Jamie Martin Mann is out as the troubled teen, and a new face has taken over the role.

Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen opened with a bang on Netflix.
The series, a spinoff of Ritchie’s 2019 film, delivered almost 1.21 billion minutes of viewing over its first four days (it premiered March 7), according to Nielsen’s streaming rankings for March 4-10. It ranked second among all streaming series for the week, behind Love Is Blind (1.5 billion minutes), which repeated as the top overall title.
Netflix also got a big first week for Millie Bobby Brown’s movie Damsel, which edged The Gentlemen for second place overall: Damsel had 1.209 billion minutes of viewing to 1.205 billion for The Gentlemen. Two other shows also topped the billion-minute mark — Bluey (1.1 billion on Disney+) and Brooklyn Nine-Nine (1.04 billion on Netflix and Peacock).
After a huge opening and a strong second week, Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender fell by about 51 percent to 950 million minutes, still good for sixth place overall and third among original series.

Tulsa King season 2 has now started shooting, and Deadline reports that Craig Zisk (Weeds) has signed on to direct and executive produce the Paramount+ series.
It was reported last year that showrunner Terence Winter would be stepping down from the series following some creative differences with creator Taylor Sheridan. However, he decided to come back as a writer for the second season, which would keep his interactions with Sheridan at a minimum.
While Winter is still involved as an executive producer, he will primarily focus on writing for the show as well as working closely with Sylvester Stallone. “He loves these characters and loved working with Sly and was glad his post-strike schedule allowed him to return to write but not run the show,” a source said. Instead of bringing in another showrunner, the production decided to follow in the footsteps of the other shows produced by Sheridan’s 101 Studios...

What happens when you plan an extravagant worldwide tour… and nobody shows up?
That, unfortunately, seems to be the case for Girls5eva, the sharp and sassy music-industry comedy that moved from Peacock to Netflix for its third season this month. The show — staring Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Busy Philipps and Paula Pell as the members of a forgotten Y2K-era girl group attempting a middle-age comeback — was never properly appreciated during its two Peacock seasons, and it felt like a lifeline when it got picked up by Netflix for Season 3, since the streaming giant routinely turns its acquired shows into monster hits.

Exclusive: Rob Kirkland will return as Police Captain Walter in Season 3 of the Paramount+ Original series Mayor of Kingstown, currently in production.
He is the second actor returning to the series following Deadline’s announcement revealing Natasha Marc will reprise the role of Cherry. Kirkland’s last appearance in Mayor of Kingstown was in the 10th episode of Season 1, however, he played the character in Season 5 of Yellowstone.
Co-created by Oscar nominee Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon, Mayor of Kingstown follows the McLusky family, power brokers in Kingstown, Michigan, where the business of incarceration is the only thriving industry. Tackling themes of systemic racism, corruption and inequality, the series provides a stark look at their attempt to bring order and justice to a town that has neither.

The live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender had a big premiere week.
The remake of the beloved Nickelodeon animated series opened at No. 1 overall on Nielsen’s streaming charts for Feb. 19-25. Avatar had 2.56 billion minutes of viewing in the United States over its first four days (it premiered Feb. 22), the second biggest week for any streaming title in 2024 so far (behind the 3.04 billion for Fool Me Once in early January).
Love Is Blind also had a big week for Netflix. The dating show more than doubled its total viewing time from the previous week, growing to 2.41 billion minutes as Netflix released the second batch of episodes from season six.
HBO’s True Detective had its best showing of the year to date the week after its fourth season finale, growing by 15 percent to 889 million minutes of viewing on Max (that tally doesn’t include any linear viewing on HBO’s...

appearance on Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings, clocking in with just under 2.6 billion minutes watched in its first four days of availability.
That’s nearly double the debut seen by Netflix’s most recent comparable series: “One Piece,” the live-action adaptation of the popular manga of the same name that hit 1.3 billion viewing minutes in its first four days.
Interestingly, when Netflix released its proprietary data regarding “Avatar” last month, it was only 15% ahead of “One Piece’s” debut. However, the Netflix Top 10 measures worldwide viewership on all devices, whereas Nielsen only accounts for TV screens in the U.S. Therefore, “Avatar’s” Nielsen performance implies that the series was more successful in stateside than in other countries.

The debut of Season 6 of “Love Is Blind” helped propel the show to the top of Nielsen streaming Top 10 charts.
The unscripted series pulled in 907 million minutes viewed for the week of Feb. 12-18, putting it in third place on the overall top 10 and first place in the streaming originals top 10. Netflix debuted the sixth season of Love Is Blind on Valentine’s Day, and the show captured a lot of viewers’ hearts — or at least their eyes.
The dating show easily led Nielsen’s original streaming series rankings for Feb. 12-18, drawing 907 million minutes of viewing time in the United States. It also finished third overall, behind library shows Bluey (1.17 billion minutes on Disney+) and Young Sheldon (1 billion on Netflix and Max). Those two swapped spots from the previous week.
Netflix’s romance One Day had 460 million minutes of watch time, a healthy 55 percent improvement over its opening. Apple TV+’s World War II drama Masters of the Air hit the rankings for the first time with 243 million minutes, with three fourths of that total coming from the episode that premiered Feb. 16.
Oppenheimer also had its streaming premiere on Peacock that week, leading the movies top 10 with 612 million minutes of watch time.

Jeffrey Wright is finally an Oscar nominee. The actor’s storied career had already brought him under the direction of masters such as Sidney Lumet, Ang Lee, and most recently, newcomer Cord Jefferson in the satirical dramedy “American Fiction.” But with his Oscar nom, Wright says he feels more supported than ever by the Hollywood community and studios.
“I’ve never had this level of support behind a project that I was central to from the powers that be, the business side of our industry,” he tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast. “I’ve never had it until now. I’m really grateful for that. We’re here now, and I’m so pleased the film has been recognized across the board. With a small movie and 26 days of filming, our budget was probably the catering budget for the last Bond movie I did.”
