Many film websites published “decade’s best horror films” lists in late 2009/early 2010. While these lists collectively provided a rough snapshot of the genre’s ups and downs during that time, with more time to reflect, it becomes increasingly clear what an important period the 2000’s were for the horror genre on a global scale.
Not only did this decade easily and obviously eclipse the comparatively arid 1990’s in both volume of production and overall quality, the 2000’s can also be looked at as a crucial one for horror cinema despite the justified outrage about the American film industry’s widespread strip-mining of classics and foreign films for remakes/re-boots and its saturation of the market with teen-friendly PG-13 rated horror films.
While by no means as groundbreaking as the 1970’s or as sentimentally regarded as the 1980’s, the 2000’s will be recalled as the decade that, despite well-founded criticisms...

Danny Pang, still best known as one half of the brotherly directorial duo responsible for the 2002 hit “The Eye”, takes another shot at recapturing his past form with “Fairy Tale Killer”, which as its title suggests follows the police hunt for a murderer who bases his methods around children’s fables. As with any Pang production, the film is a glossy affair with slick visuals, and this time has a couple of big headlining stars in Lau Ching Wan (“Life Without Principle”) and Wang Baoqiang (“Mr. Tree”), with support from the likes of Elanne Kwong (“Love Lifting”), Elena Kong (“A Simple Life”), Joey Meng (“All About Love”), and ultra prolific Hong Kong character actor Lam Suet (“The Great Magician”). The film opens with a strange, stammering young man with white face makeup called Ng (Wang Baoqiang) turning up at the police station of Inspector Wong (Lau Ching Wan) and confessing to a murder.

When discussing the careers of the Pang Brothers, it doesn't take long before you start repeating yourself. After a couple of promising Thai thrillers, Danny and his twin brother Oxide scored a massive international hit with 2002's The Eye - and, whether working together or separately, have been struggling to match that success ever since. They have come close on occasion. I think there's a fair amount to appreciate in 2006's re-teaming with Oxide's off-screen partner Lee Sinje, Re-Cycle, and their Bangkok-based cop thriller The Detective, starring Aaron Kwok, also has plenty going for it. Outside of these few entries, however, the brothers' prolific back catalogue is largely devoid of pedigree. Despite all this, I still find myself giving the Pangs the benefit of the doubt,...

Inside we've added the official poster and international trailer for The Eye co-director Danny Pang's Fairy Tale Killer. "Jun confesses five murders at police station, but he fails to illustrate the details. The Police believe Jun is mentally deranged as his claims of murder just dont match the facts. Soon after, a cold-blooded murder unveils a series of mysterious deaths in the district where Detective Han (Ching Wan Lau) stations resides. Each of the victims is executed by different but equally brutal ways. Instinct tells him Jun is the suspense after he goes over all recent statements. But when his team goes and searches Jun's apartment, they find nothing except a pile of old fairy tale books." Both films were being sold at Efm.

Danny Pan, one half of directing duo The Pang Brothers ('The Eye', 'Bangkok Dangerous'), will hopefully return to horror form with his new thriller 'Fairy Tale Killer'. Currently in post-production the Hong Kong helmer's new story, penned by Kam-Yuen Szeto, is based around a serial murderer who appears to using a collection of old fairy tale books as his influence. Ching Wan Lau, Ken Lo, Elanne Kwong, Baoqiang Wang, Yee-Man Man and Kelly Fu all star and you can check out a new poster and trailer from the production below!...

What happens when violent crimes start to resemble fairy tales? You put a seasoned cop in charge of the investigations. I first read about director Danny Pang’s upcoming thriller “Fairy Tale Killer” (aka “Perfect Fairy Tale”) way back in 2010, though everything has been strangely quiet since then. Until now, that is. Below you’ll find the first creepy trailer for the flick, as well as a fairly nifty poster to help promote the flick’s May release date. Pang usually does good work — “The Eye 10″ and the remake of “Bangkok Dangerous” being the clear exceptions to that statement — so it will be interesting to see how this visionary filmmaker tackles a subject that seems to be quite popular right now. Here’s hoping he does something cool with it. The trailer for “Fairy Tale Killer”, which stars Ching Wan Lau, resides below. It’s worth a look, I think...

Lau Ching Wan, one of the best actors working in Hong Kong today, is back with the new film Fairy Tale Killer. The film is directed by Danny Pang, who is most famous for the films in which he collaborated with his older twin Oxide Pang, in particular the classic 2002 horror film The Eye. While many of the films from the Pang brothers over the years were disappointing, Fairy Tale Killer may fare better thanks to a strong cast including Lau and award-winning co-star Wang Bao Qiang (Blind Shaft, Assembly, A World Without Thieves), as well as a screenplay from Szeto Kam Yuen who wrote the scripts for some of the best Milkyway Image productions (Exiled, A Hero Never Dies, Expect The Unexpected, The Longest...

Director: The Pang Brothers. Review: Adam Wing. Few filmmakers thrill and frustrate the way The Pang Brothers do. Early collaborations – Bangkok Dangerous and The Eye in particular – were smash hits the world over. Their solo outings have been something of a mixed bag, with Oxide fairing slightly better than Danny. ‘Abnormal Beauty,’ ‘Diary’ and ‘The Detective’ are certainly worth a look, but recent offerings have definitely been more miss than hit. ‘Storm Warriors’ – a sequel to smash hit movie ‘The Storm Riders’ – was a huge disappointment, and over the last few years we have had to endure Hollywood misfire ‘The Messengers,’ as well as 3D infused (should that read infuriating?) features ‘The Childs Eye’ and ‘Sleepwalker.’ Re-cycle was released in 2006, sandwiched between ‘The Eye 2’ and their Hollywood debut; it’s also arguably their greatest achievement. Angelica Lee (married to Oxide and starring in the second of three collaborations with the siblings) is Ting-yin,...

“Sleepwalker” is the latest solo effort from Oxide Pang, one half of the twin brother directorial duo still best known for their hit 2002 ghost story “The Eye”. The film sees him reteaming with that film’s leading lady, his wife Angelica Lee, this time in a plot dealing with kidnapped children and the always creepy subject of sleepwalking. The film also stars Charlie Young, working for the director again after the ill-advised “Bangkok Dangerous” remake in 2008, along with Huo Siyan (“My Name is Fame”) and Li Zonghan (“Reign of Assassins”), plus Hong Kong character actor favourite Kent Cheng (who memorably starred in a long string of 1980s and 90s classics such as “Run and Kill”, “Dr Lamb”, “Sex and Zen”, and countless others). When it comes to horror films, Americans must humbly bow their heads and concede defeat to their international brethren. Sure, Wes Craven, Tobe Hooper, George Romero and others deserve all the accolades they've received, but as the below films prove, clever horror knows no American territoriality.
Eerie houses, ghost eyes, and sadistic doctors can be found anywhere.
Here are nine extremely scary exports every horror fan needs to see.
'The Eye' (2002)
Country: Hong Kong
Why So Scary: You'll hear this a lot from us, but skip the 2008 remake starring Jessica Alba (if you even remember it) and check out the Pang brothers' tale of a blind woman who receives a corneal transplant and begins seeing strange, dark figures everywhere she goes. It'd be a betrayal to give away any more than that. Let's just say we dug our fingers into the seat cushion more times than we'd like to admit.

The Pang Brothers made a name for themselves with 2002’s The Eye; the lasting impression it left was for Hollywood to remake it. Unfortunately for their latest effort The Child’s Eye, it likely won’t receive such treatment. The film isn’t truly awful but it isn’t very good either, playing for real scares and atmosphere it fails on both counts. It was intended for the audience to experience it in 3D, but on DVD it is just in 2D and the gimmick is apparent and it looks laughable.

The latest supernatural thriller from Hong Kong director Oxide Pang sees him flying solo without twin brother and regular collaborator Danny Pang, but reuniting professionally with wife Angelica Lee Sinje. Due for release in Hong Kong on 3 November, Universe has finally released the first trailer, which appears to again combine spooky atmospherics with CG-heavy otherworldly environments that featured heavily in the earlier Pang/Lee features, The Eye and Recycle. The trailer depicts Lee sporting a rather shocking mop of hair which achieves the incredibly difficult task of making her look decidedly less than attractive. Oxide Pang flies solo this time out, but instead of working alongside brother Danny, he's bringing his good lady Angelica Lee Sinje along for the ride. Their previous collaborations, The Eye and Re-cycle represent the very best of the Pangs output and from what I've seen of this one so far, they could well be back on winning track here. Add to the mix the angle of 3D - not a technology I'm normally a fan of - but Pang has certainly shown in the past that he knows how to use it effectively, and we have the makings of a great-looking and hopefully atmospheric little horror movie. We hope to be able to share the film's official trailer with you in the coming days,...

Screen Daily tells us that Hong Kong's Universe Films Distribution has secured North American distribution on the Pang Brothers' (The Eye) 3D horror The Child’s Eye (sounds like they're really shaking it up!) through Grindstone Entertainment. A box office success in the Asian market, we're looking forward to getting the chance to give it a go.
The Hollywood Reporter opened the floodgates on an entire slew on genre-based titles, including writer/director Rowan Joffe's (28 Weeks Later) Before I Go to Sleep - a psychological horror film about an amnesiac woman who has no memories of her married life.

Although probably still best known for their 2002 horror hit, The Eye, the Pang Brothers have never stopped working. In the decade since, they have experienced further success with Recycle and Storm Warriors, as well as burned their fingertips in the Hollywood cauldron with The Messengers and their ill-advised remake of their own Bangkok Dangerous with Nicholas Cage. The twins have also indulged in solo projects, with no greater success than older brother Oxide's 2007 supernatural snooper, The Detective. At the time, star Aaron Kwok was riding a wave of critical praise in the wake of award-winning performances in Divergence and After This Our Exile, while the project gave Oxide the opportunity to work in their beloved Bangkok. The result was a smart, spooky...

Director: Oxide Pang. Review: Adam Wing. The Pang Brothers are back. The most infuriating filmmakers in the world today, Danny and Oxide Pang have been taking us on a ride to cinematic Heaven and Hell for the past twelve years. Often inspiring, often insipid, you get the idea. They’ve been making films together since the dawn of time (not bad for a pair of directors still in their forties) and for every work of art (Bangkok Dangerous, The Eye, Recycle) there has been a work of arse (The Messengers, The Eye Infinity, The Storm Warriors). Their solo projects are even more puzzling, ranging from intermittently entertaining to darn right annoying. Of the two brothers Danny would appear to be the least talented behind the camera, either that or his choice of solo projects have been decidedly dubious. In Love With The Dead, Forest Of Death and Leave Me Alone...

At the same time that the Hong Kong Film Festival is held (currently in full swing), Filmart (21 - 24 April) unveiled several titles that caught our eye and that we look forward to in the near future. Among the noteworthy items promoted at the event, the lineup at Emperor Motion Pictures includes four major films, "The Great Magician", "The Last Supper", "The Viral Factor" and "Diva". "The Great Magician" is now currently in production, starring Tony Leung and directed by Derek Yee, centering on a story of a magician who saves his country with his tricks and illusions. "The Last Supper" will be directed by Lu Chuan, who won the best director award of Asian Film Awards last year. He would pair up heavyweights stars Liu Ye, Chang Chen and Daniel Wu on this new historical drama. "The Viral Factor" will mark another collaboration between director Dante Lam and actor Nicholas Tse,...

Released theatrically in Hong Kong 11 years after its predecessor, Storm Warriors is a sequel to the 1998 movie Storm Riders. Despite pretty boys Ekin Cheng and Aaron Kwok returning as the warriors Wind and Cloud, the two films split into two directions. Different directors, different visions.
The Pang Brothers take artistic influence to a new level. Each film they release seems to copy the style of a recently successful contemporary: Bangkok Dangerous reeks of Tsui Hark, The Eye follows the footsteps of Takashi Shimizu, and Storm Warriors blatantly looks like it was directed by a poor man’s Zack Snyder.
Shot extensively, though not entirely, on bluescreen, the film uses 300-style CGI backgrounds and its trademark annoying stop-start slow-motion action scenes; except it obviously has 1/10 of the budget so they just look like a daytime children’s program that has the human host dancing in front of a cartoon landscape. The Pang brothers, Danny and Oxide, have brought us a whole lot of terror over the years with their The Eye franchise (we'll ignore that one entry which featured people farting to keep the ghosts away). The directing duo have separated for the time being to direct two new flicks, and we have a look at both for you.
The good folks over at Twitch Film landed the first stills from both Sleepwalker 3D and Fairy Tale Killer. Dig on them both below.
Oxide Pang's Sleepwalker 3D stars Sinje Lee, Charlie Young, and Bi Chang Zhou.
Synopsis
The film follows main character Yi, who never imagined a revolving dream haunting her every night would eventually evolve into a real-life nightmare. Shortly after a dream man enters her gloomy life, Yi, a sleepwalker, is set back again by a past broken relationship and becomes a suspected murderer of her ex-husband.

As the craze continues to sweep cinemas across the globe, Hong Kong gets its first digital 3D film with “The Child’s Eye”, the latest in the long running horror series which began back in 2002 with “The Eye”. Appropriately enough, the film sees the return of original directors the Pang Brothers, who have since become well known for their cutting edge use of visual effects and techniques, as seen recently in their spectacular “Storm Warriors”. The film has a hip young cast, headlined by Taiwanese idol Rainie Yang (“Spider Lilies”), continuing to win more respect for her acting career, with support from Elanne Kong (“Rebellion”), Gordon Lam (“Infernal Affairs”), and Jo Koo (“The Detective”), and with Shawn Yue (“Love in a Puff”) in a guest role. The film is set back in the Pangs’ hometown of Bangkok, where Rainie (Rainie Yang), sulky boyfriend Lok (Shawn Yue) and two other couples...

“The Child’s Eye” is the latest entry in the Pang Brothers’ “Eye” horror series, one that began in fine fashion with 2002’s highly effective “The Eye” (starring Angelica Lee), before repeating itself with “The Eye 2” two years later (with Qi Shu this time seeing ghosts), and the curiously named “The Eye 10” three years after that. “The Child’s Eye” boasts the Pangs working in the 3D format, and indeed, much of the film’s selling points seem to be those “look out, it’s coming right at you!” 3D elements. As to the film itself? Well let’s just say this: “The Child’s Eye” should have been sold as a comedy, because I laughed more times than I cringed in fear. Unfortunately, I think everyone involved in the film were going for scares. 2002’s “The Eye” was so good that it spawned a Hollywood remake starring Jessica Alba,...

The Pang Brothers' greatest successes - their international breakout with The Eye, their Cannes selection with Re-Cycle - have both come with star Angelica Lee in the lead so is it vain to hope that her third on-screen pairing with a Pang could restore them to their previous form?
The Pangs - twin brothers Danny and Oxide - have stumbled badly in recent years, seeming to favor quantity over quality with their standard output being one solo film each and a Brothers film almost every year. though their visual skills are still on display in fits and starts there's simply no denying that the quality of their scripts has been in steady decline and the international fan base built by The Eye has been steadily eroding. That said early work such as The Eye and the original Bangkok Dangerous still stand as potent pieces of work, making it difficult...

Three Hong Kong films were selected for this year's Venice Film Festival. Teh 67th edition will welcome The Child's Eye, Red Earth and the most buzzed film which is also bound for Tiff in Legend of the Fist: the Return of Chen Zhen. Red Earth, a short film directed by Clara Law (an Australian co-production), was previously selected for this year's Hong Kong International Film Festival as one of four films for "Quattro Hong Kong," a section of films produced by the festival society as a sort of tribute to the city of Hong Kong. Red Earth is about a management consultant played by Daniel Wu who goes to Hong Kong to meet a girl briefly encountered before, he checks in a hotel to wait for her to show him an unforgettable view of sunset that she promised him. But he can no longer remember her face and strange things...

Stranded in Thailand by the political uprising and airport closure, Rainie and her friends were unable to return home. Reluctantly, they decide to stay in an aged and shabby hotel. Among them is Rainies almost-breakup boyfriend, Lok, Ling and her brother Rex and Ciwi with her beloved boyfriend, Hei. The moment they check into the hotelthey come across three weird children and a puppy that seems slightly odd. I will confess that when I first saw the promo for Guillem Morales' Julia's Eyes in Berlin I was not particularly impressed. Yes, the production values were fine but the execution at that point seemed a bit by the numbers and the story - which revolves around a woman investigating the supposed suicide of her blind sister as her own vision fails - seemed to lift a bit from the Pang Brothers offering The Eye. Well, the thing about promo reels is that they're often put together quickly with unfinished footage and are not always the best things to judge by.
Enter the first proper teaser for the picture, which features Guillermo Del Toro as a producer. Now this is more like it. Atmospheric and haunting, this does exactly what a teaser should do: It sets the tone without feeding you the entire story. Check it below.

Hong Kong director and all round horror auteur Danny Pang is a busy man it seems. Still putting the finishing touches - with his brother Oxide - to their latest scare flick (the newest “3D” instalment in their blockbuster ‘The Eye’ series) “Childs Eye,” he already has new project in the works, a horror thriller titled Fairy Tale Killer. Details are still sketchy but we do know that Hong Kong acting veteran Ching Wan Lau (Mad Detective," "Overheard") has signed on to star in the lead. Lau will play a hard nosed cop appointed to investigate a series of puzzling and grisly murders, arranged in such a way as to resemble Fairy Tales? Danny Pang directing an actor of Ching Wan Lau's calibre, in a story of Fairy Tales turned bad and bloody. Late 2010, just got a whole lot more interesting! More when we get it.
