Border towns can be strange places to grow up, and that’s especially true of Laredo. Situated on the divide between Texas and Mexico, this transient place is defined by change as thousands of immigrants try to pass through in search of something better. Yet there’s also an unyielding rigidity to the river that splits these two worlds. To cross would be a one-way ticket, something that 21-year-old Estefanía ’Beba’ Contreras and 18-year-old Silvia Del Carmen Castaños know firsthand.
Shared fears for their families and their future in America bind the pair (Sylvia was born to undocumented parents while Beba waits for her citizenship application), yet these anxieties don’t define them or their connection. In fact, they’re doggedly determined to live lives free of constraint in every aspect, a desire expressed by how fluidly they switch between Spanish and English, by their sexual and gender identities, and of course by “Hummingbirds,...

A Let’s Make a Deal contestant got a bit handsy while contemplating an offer for another prize.
During a recent segment on the show, Wayne Brady was on stage wearing a mustache as he presented a game for prizes.
The pair of contestants had to write down either “TV” or “Camp” on white cards to see if their answers matched to win a prize.
When Brady asked them to reveal their cards, the buzzer sounded as they each had a different answer.
“Oh no. Oh, my goodness. Well, that was not a match,” Brady said before asking each of them to explain why they answered the way they did.
“Because I like TVs,” the woman said after the guy said he wrote camping because he was “going camping tomorrow” and has a lot of TVs.

"Batman: The Animated Series" has many artistic fathers. Tim Burton's 1989 "Batman" film, of course, but also the Fleischer Studios Superman cartoons of the 1940s, the Art Deco movement (which the skyscrapers of Gotham City are made in the visage of), and film noir.
Noir is a film genre characterized by dark high-contrast shadows ("noir" means "black" in French) shot in black-and-white, featuring urban settings, crime (whether the lead is on the wrong or right side of the law), beautiful but duplicitous women, and nefarious schemes gone awry. Noir sprouted up in the 1930s-40s, when most films were black-and-white and pulp novels, from thrillers and to detective stories, were easy fodder for Hollywood adaptations. The storytelling motifs of those books were thus intertwined with Hollywood's biting black-and-white style.

Hello, and welcome to the Scene to Seen Podcast!
I am Valerie Complex Associate editor and film writer at Deadline. On today’s episode, we’re talking to documentarian Nancy Kates, director of PBS documentary Brother Outsider: The Life Of Bayard Rustin, about the civil rights activist and the architect of the March on Washington in 1963.
The documentary chronicles his 60-year career as an activist, organizer and “troublemaker.” Bayard Rustin formulated many of the strategies that propelled the American civil rights movement. His passionate belief in Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolence drew Martin Luther King Jr. and other leaders to him in the 1940’s and 50’s; his practice of those beliefs drew the attention of the FBI and police. In 1963, Rustin brought his unique skills to the crowning glory of his civil rights career: his work organizing the March on Washington, the biggest protest America had ever seen.

Ariana Grande, a lyrical genius when it comes to all things sex and romance, has quite a romantic history herself that includes fellow stars and an ex-husband. Back in 2021, the singer tied the knot with luxury real estate agent Dalton Gomez during a "tiny and intimate" ceremony with their closest friends and family. While the pair largely kept their relationship under wraps, news of a split has thrust it back into the spotlight.
Grande and Gomez first confirmed their relationship in May 2020 with the former and Justin Bieber's "Stuck With U" music video, which showed the then-couple isolating together at her home in Los Angeles. Eva Maria Daniels, producer of independent features “Reality,” “What Maisie Knew” and “Joe Bell,” died on June 30 in London, after battling cancer. She was 43.
Throughout her career, Daniels maintained longstanding partnerships with producer Riva Marker and A24, worked as a producer for The Mill and Company 3 and served as a consultant for the Icelandic Film Fund.
“Eva died on the same terms as she lived. She played her cards close to her chest. She didn’t seek recognition when she had success. She didn’t seek pity when she suffered. I will miss her friendship greatly, but mostly I will miss seeing what she would have done next,” wrote director Börkur Sigthorsson on Facebook.
Most recently, Daniels executive produced the Berlin Film Festival selection and Max feature, “Reality,” which stars Sydney Sweeney and was directed by Tina Satter.
“Eva was hyper intelligent and had a gift for seeking out and supporting artists.
