The Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios series, which was announced with a straight-to-series order in February 2023, is based on the French drama series “Le Bureau des Legendes” created by Eric Rochant. Actor Jamie Foxx teamed up with his good friend Robert Downey Jr. for the heavy drama The Soloist. Foxx dug deep to inhabit his character in the feature. So much so that the film reminded him of a traumatic experience in his past.
Jamie Foxx once shared being drugged years ago caused him massive anxiety for ‘The Soloist’ Jamie Foxx | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
The Soloist was a 2009 feature starring Foxx as a homeless musician battling schizophrenia. Given the nature of his role, Foxx went through extreme physical and mental preparations to embody the character. But due to his character’s mental state, Foxx couldn’t help reflect on a dark period in his past when he was drugged.
“Someone played a practical joke on me and slipped something to me and I went off. I ended up going to [the] hospital and I’m in college,” Foxx once confided to Collider.

The "Amazing Spider-Man" movies aren't as widely celebrated as the Sam Raimi trilogy, or as popular as the MCU Spidey flicks. But for me, there was a heart to "The Amazing Spider-Man" and its 2014 sequel that made Andrew Garfield's two outings as the wall-crawler just as good as any other Spider-Man movie. Unfortunately, I am very much in the minority on this highly important topic. Sure, they have their fans, but people in general just didn't seem to resonate with the Garfield films and their tragic history. Which is fine, especially since we got to see Garfield's Peter Parker return to rapturous applause in 2021's "Spider-Man: No Way Home."
Alongside him were a couple of villains from the "Amazing Spider-Man"-verse, including the Rhys Ifans' Lizard, who basically manifested as CGI mixed with some reused footage from the original movie. More importantly, though, Jamie Foxx was given another go...

The jokes will extend well past April 1st on HBO and HBO Max.
“Barry” returns for its fourth and final season. After the shocking Season 3 finale which saw Barry (Billy Hader) getting arrested and Cousineau (Henry Winkler) being hailed as a hero, there will be plenty of consequences for both. The dark comedy premieres on April 16 with two episodes.
“A Black Lady Sketch Show” will also bring plenty of laughs when it returns for its fourth season. The sketch comedy series premieres April 14.
On the drama side, the limited series “Love and Death” premieres on April 27. It’s based on the true story of Candy (Elizabeth Olsen) and Pat Montgomery (Patrick Fugit) and Betty (Lily Rabe) and Allan Gore (Jesse Plemons) – two churchgoing couples enjoying their small-town Texas life… until an extramarital affair leads somebody to pick up an axe.

With its list of new releases for April 2023, HBO Max is premiering the final episodes of two major shows.
First up is the continuation of Titans season 4 on April 13. Returning after a four month hiatus, these next six episodes will be the last go around for HBO Max’s gritty live-action DC series. Arriving three days later on HBO proper is the fourth and final season of Barry. Bill Hader and the rest of the Barry team wrote themselves into a fascinating corner with the conclusion of season 3. And judging by the first teasers for season 4, this final batch of episodes will indeed catch up with our favorite actor/hitman in prison.
Other TV shows of note this month include the Pete Davidson-starring animated series Fired on Mars on April 20 (light ’em up) the the Elizabeth Olsen-starring true crime story Love & Death on April 27.

Additional highlights of the streaming service’s April lineup include the debut of Love & Death, a limited series starring Elizabeth Olsen and Patrick Fugit; season two of Somebody Somewhere with Bridget Everett; and the return of 100 Foot Wave for a second season.
In addition, the Titans mid-season premiere arrives on April 13. HBO Max offers this description of the fourth and final season’s remaining episodes: “The Titans – with the exception of Gar – are returned to the Temple of Trigon and rush to find Sebastian and Mother Mayhem before Sebastian summons Trigon. Along the way, they come across a prophecy that may require Kory to make a huge sacrifice to save the world.

In the final season of HBO Max’s “Barry,” premiering on April 16, Barry’s arrest for the murder of Cousineau’s girlfriend leads to a shocking conclusion. Barry (Bill Hader), a hitman who stumbles into acting, explores the dark, often comedic underbelly of both LA gangsters and Hollywood. Henry Winkler stars as Cousineau, Barry’s acting teacher and the man forced to confront the reality of his former student.

Her husband Alan (Jesse Plemons) has an affair with Candy (Elizabeth Olsen), who attends their church. Suddenly, the thrills turn deadly. Joe Wright to Direct Mussolini TV Series ‘M’ From ‘Bones and All’ Producer Lorenzo Mieli (Exclusive)
British director Joe Wright, who helmed Winston Churchill drama “Darkest Hour” – which earned Gary Oldman an Oscar for his portrayal as the British prime minister – is set to change historical sides and direct TV drama “M,” which chronicles Benito Mussolini’s rise to power.
The high-end series, which is based on Antonio Scurati’s Premio Strega-winning and international bestselling novel “M. Son of the Century,” traces the birth of Fascism in Italy and Mussolini’s ascent with an innovative approach that has sparked debate about the Fascist dictator’s legacy in Italy and abroad.
“The writer understood and put on paper, with facts and documents and everything, that Mussolini is the guy – him and only him – who created what we now know as populism and Fascism,” said the show’s producer Lorenzo Mieli, speaking in Venice, where he is among producers of Luca Guadagnino’s “Bones and All.”

Jamie Foxx’s directorial debut may never actually debut. This is chiefly due to the controversy over casting Robert Downey Jr. in what has only been described as a Mexican. While promoting his latest, the vampire comedy Day Shift, Foxx discussed the status of his shelved basketball-centric comedy All-Star Weekend.
It’s been tough…with the lay of the land of comedy…We’re trying to break open those sensitive corners where people go back to laughing again.”
It seems Foxx was actively avoiding the hot-button phrase “cancel culture”, a modern form of backlash that a movie like, say, Tropic Thunder, dodged by a few years.
Obvious comparisons can be made to Downey Jr.’s role in that movie, in which he (in)famously played a white Australian actor who gets “pigmentation alteration” surgery to play a Black soldier. That role did draw controversy–and was especially risky considering it...

I am not at all religious. But I do despair that so many people — both in my home country of the United States and my adopted land of the United Kingdom — profess to be Christian and claim these nations themselves are fueled by Christian values, and yet absolutely stomp, individually and collectively, on the ideals that Jesus preached. Particularly when it comes to looking after the poor, the downtrodden, and the marginalized.
So it’s especially nice, on this Easter Sunday, to see such a lovely, gentle film as Theirs Is the Kingdom, one of the very few movies I’ve ever seen that evinces even a passing religiosity that Jesus himself might approve of.
Study for the fresco of a man called Blue.
Asheville, North Carolina, is a hip, artsy, gentrifying college town surrounded by, as someone notes here, “real Appalachian poverty.” This small city, this place of harsh...

Laura Dern (Jurassic World Dominion) and Liam Hemsworth (Poker Face) have signed on to star in the film Lonely Planet, which Susannah Grant (Unbelievable) is writing and directing for Netflix.
Lonely Planet is billed as a love story set in Morocco. Specifics with regard to its plot are being kept under wraps. Grant is also producing alongside Sarah Timberman and Liza Chasin for 3dot Productions, with VP Studio Film Kira Goldberg serving as creative lead for Netflix.
The film continues the creative partnership between Netflix and 3dot, which has thus far produced the streamer’s upcoming thriller series, Anatomy of a Scandal, based on the book by Sarah Vaughan. 3dot entered into a multi-year, first-look film deal with Netflix in 2019, with adaptations of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s bestseller The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Diane Cardwell’s memoir Rockaway also upcoming.

Veteran producer Joel Silver (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey’s Team Downey and Amazon Studios are partnering to develop a series of feature film and television projects based on Donald E. Hello everyone, welcome to the B-Side Podcast for The Film Stage where we talk about movie stars and filmmakers – not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between.
Today we’re so thrilled to finally be sharing with you an interview we conducted last year with esteemed filmmaker Joe Wright, whose new film Cyrano is in theaters everywhere this Friday, February 25th!
Cyrano stars Peter Dinklage, Haley Bennett, Kelvin Harrison, Jr. and Ben Mendelsohn and is a sweeping musical adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac. It’s a film we both really enjoy, so please do seek it out.
Our conversation with Joe is a delightfully honest one. We talk through his career, of course discussing Cyrano, but also diving deep into The Soloist (and why he’s extremely proud of that film), Anna Karenina (another film we love here), and the...

Joe Wright has style. He’s the kind of sumptuously visual director you either love or hate, which may explain why a Best Director Oscar nomination has eluded him so far, even when his signature period dramas land Oscar nods galore, from literary adaptations “Pride & Prejudice”, “Atonement”, and “Anna Karenina” to Winston Churchill war picture “Darkest Hour”.
The British director also takes fliers on movies that occasionally miss the mark, such as Los Angeles homeless drama “The Soloist,” Disney fantasy “Pan,” and Hitchcockian thriller “The Woman in the Window,” a Fox orphan that previewed badly and was sold by Disney to Netflix during the pandemic.
The director didn’t waste any time jumping into a new project. He’d nurtured the idea of making a movie of “Cyrano” since 2018, when he went to see his partner Haley Bennett play Roxanne in writer-director Erica Schmidt’s Goodspeed Opera House musical...

When you’re a streaming service, there’s only one way to celebrate the New Year. And that’s by IP mining to bring back a franchise that had no business in coming back!
With its list of new releases for January 2022, Hulu is raiding CBS’s closet and premiering How I Met Your Father, a continuation of the sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Complaints about unnecessary rebooting aside, perhaps its worth giving the Hillary Duff starring series a chance. As the Hollywood blockbuster machine continues to dust itself off and release some early winter hits, Hulu is going in a bit of a different direction with its list of new releases for November 2021.
There are no big Hulu original films of note this month. Instead there’s a whole host of original series. The TV parade starts on Nov. 5 with the release of Animaniacs season 2. Also getting a second season this month is monarchal comedy The Great on Nov. 19. The most intriguing series, however, is animated Marvel comedy Marvel’s Hit Monkey. As its name so graciously implies, this is a show about a hit monkey…as in monkey assassin. Naturally the hit monkey is haunted by the ghost of Jason Sudeikis because it’s important that everything make sense.
Though Hulu doesn’t have any original movies in November, its list of library movie titles is quite vast.

Hulu’s list of new releases for June 2021 is highlighted by a host of useful library titles and one fascinating original film.
The original film in question is the one that lends its delightful photo of Pierce Brosnan delivering a baby to this post. False Positive stars and was written by Ilana Glazer (Broad City). It sounds like a really fun, creepy time with a synopsis that reads: “After months of trying and failing to get pregnant, Lucy (Glazer) and Adrian (Justin Theroux) finally find their dream fertility doctor in the illustrious Dr. Hindle (Pierce Brosnan). But after becoming pregnant with a healthy baby girl, Lucy begins to notice something sinister through Hindle’s gleaming charm, and she sets out to uncover the unsettling truth about him, and her own “birth story.” Cool!
Hulu’s other original offerings aren’t too inspiring this month. Only Love, Victor season 2 on June 11 moves the needle much.

The career of Joe Wright has been one of ups and downs, with the thrilling Hanna, gorgeous period pieces such as Atonement, Anna Karenina, and Pride & Prejudice, as well as the rather forgettable projects, such as The Soloist and Pan. His last film, Darkest Hour, might have picked up an Oscar but it already seems rather forgotten. He’s now getting into the business of best-selling thriller adaptations with The Woman in the Window.
Based on A.J. Finn’s novel and adapted by Tracy Letts, the film stars Amy Adams, Julianne Moore, Gary Oldman, Brian Tyree Henry, Wyatt Russell, and Anthony Mackie in the Rear Window-esque story of agoraphobic developmental psychologist who witnesses a crime scene. Ahead of a release this summer, delayed from this past fall, Fox has now dropped the first trailer, which previews the crime drama an can be seen below.

Even before Octavia Spencer won the best supporting actress Oscar for 2011’s The Help, she managed a hard-worked career that many actresses would envy: Consistent character parts on long-running TV series, read ABC’s Ugly Betty, Comedy Central’s Halfway Home, and TNT’s Raising the Bar, and parts in an array of movies from Martin Lawrence’s Blue Streak to Joe Wright’s The Soloist to the Will Smith movie Seven Pounds. Joe Wright, the British maximalist behind some of the most audacious screen adaptations in recent years, is as visually expressive a director as they come, and yet it’s hard to imagine watching his films with the sound off. Removing the music from any of his movies would be like ripping a bandage off an unhealed wound — impossible to remove without taking off some raw flesh. The scores that Wright commissions aren’t merely ornamental; they’re not just a garnish layered over a finished piece of work for added effect. On the contrary, the compositions are utterly inextricable from the films themselves, like a second script that weaves into the first one and knots them both together.
Needless to say, that approach could make things pretty difficult for a director who doesn’t write their own music. Fortunately for Wright, he doesn’t have to — he’s always has...

Casey Affleck has signed on to star in his first movie since winning the Best Actor Oscar for his heavy and emotional role in Manchester By the Sea. The film is called Stoner and it will be directed by Joe Wright (Atonement, Hanna, The Soloist). The movie is based on a novel by the same name written by Jon Williams.
The story will follow the life of William Stoner, “a dirt-poor farmer turned academic, who emerges as an unlikely existential hero while making his way through the first half of the 20th Century.”
Producer Jason Blum has this to say in a statement:
“Because the novel is so beautiful but not well-known, fans of ‘Stoner’ feel like they’re in a secret club. I’m so excited that Casey, Joe and Andrew have come aboard to help expand this club’s membership. This quintessentially American work is being brought to...

Actor Nelsan Ellis, best known for playing flamboyantly gay short-order cook/drug dealer/spirit medium Lafayette Reynolds on seven seasons of HBO’s True Blood, has died. According to Variety, Reynolds, who was 39, died of complications from heart failure.
Born in Chicago, and Julliard-trained, Ellis first broke into TV with a role on Fox’s short-lived crime drama The Inside, playing the tech guy for the show’s Rachel Nichols-led team of crimesolvers. Though his career is far from stalled, Jamie Foxx’s upwards trajectory that started with Ray back in 2004 has considerably slowed down. After his Oscar win for Taylor Hackford’s biopic, he had a few memorable roles in films like Dreamgirls, Law Abiding Citizen, Horrible Bosses and The Kingdom, but most of what he put out was ultimately filed under the “forgettable” category.
Stuff like Rio (and its sequel), Valentine’s Day, The Soloist and Due Date failed to leave much of an impact on audiences or critics. Varèse Sarabande will release the Everest – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally and on CD September 18, 2015.
The album features the original music composed by Dario Marianelli (Atonement, The Boxtrolls). The score is great and it’s what makes the movie even more intense!
“My initial instinctive approach to the score, which our director, Baltasar Kormákur, liked and encouraged me to follow, was to have a calling voice, a distant siren call,” explained Marianelli. “It is at the same time a voice that represents the ancient goddess-like mountain, but also a luring and irresistible calling to one’s own destiny.”

Directed by Sherlock Holmes' Guy Ritchie and toplining Man of Steel star Henry Cavill and The Lone Ranger costar Armie Hammer, the Warner Bros. release The Man from U.N.C.L.E. has been a domestic box office disaster, performing about 25 percent below – already quite modest – expectations. (See also: “'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' Movie: Bigger Box Office Flop Than Expected.”) This past weekend, the $80 million-budget The Man from U.N.C.L.E. collected a meager $13.42 million from 3,638 North American theaters, averaging $3,689 per site. After five days out, the big-screen reboot of the popular 1960s television series starring Robert Vaughn and David McCallum has taken in a mere $16.77 million. For comparison's sake:...

Warner Bros. has been moving things around their release calendar. Most notably, they have three (wait, four) Lego movies on their slate (talk about wanting to cash in on a product), which have all been rearranged in their dates. First, the untitled Lego Batman movie is coming in ahead of schedule and will be released on Feb. 10, 2017. The official The Lego Movie Sequel will be brought up a week to May 18, 2018.
