The name Blumhouse has become almost synonymous with horror in the modern era, thanks to the success of franchises such as "The Purge," "Paranormal Activity," and the recent "Halloween" reboot trilogy. That sort of brand recognition is tough to acquire in Hollywood. That said, the studio has had something of an off year, and could use an unqualified hit to get things back on track. It looks like the upcoming "Speak No Evil" remake could be that much-needed hit when it opens next weekend.
Director James Watkins' take on "Speak No Evil" is currently eyeing a debut in the $15 to $20 million range, per Box Office Theory. While the budget has yet to be revealed, Blumhouse rarely goes over $20 million since its business model has always been predicated on spending low to potentially hit it big. It worked with Jordan Peele's "Get Out," it worked with M. Night Shyamalan's...

Earlier this year, it was announced that a remake of the 1941 horror movie classic The Wolf Man was being made at Blumhouse. Filming began in March with Leigh Whannell, the director behind the successful 2020 remake of The Invisible Man, returning and Christopher Abbot playing the titular monster. The movie is the latest in the reimagining of the classic monsters from the studio behind the Paranormal Activity franchise.
Many were curious as to how the studio would handle the story, as their take on the Invisible Man was very different form the 1933 original. The last time The Wolf Man was seen on screen was the 2010 version starring Benicio del Toro and Anthony Hopkins.
Now, at this year’s Halloween Horror Nights event in Universal Studios, guests got a sneak peak at the look of this new Wolf Man version and it is, well…

Attention: The Following Report Is A Rumor. Please Take The Following Story With A Grain Of Salt.
Universal’s push to revive its brand of classic horror movie monsters is slowly gaining momentum. After the disappointment that was the 2017 remake of The Mummy, Universal decided to go in a different direction with the 2020 remake of The Invisible Man. Universal partnered with horror movie studio Blumhouse Productions, known for the Paranormal Activity franchise. This tactic played out well, with the film making $144.5 million on a $7 million budget.
With one of Universal’s new lands at their upcoming Epic Universe theme park being themed after their classic monsters, you can bet that they are attempting to reinvigorate these characters on the big screen.
In addition to Blumhouse’s current work on a remake of The Wolfman for 2025, Universal is apparently working with them on another remake, and this time, they are bringing the big guns.

Whether you want a job done right, or just done right now, do it yourself. That’s the fearless edict uniting first-time feature filmmaker Chris Stuckmann and his headstrong final girl Mia (Camille Sullivan) in the winding mystery of “Shelby Oaks.”

When four internet ghosthunters known as the Paranormal Paranoids find trouble in an abandoned town, three turn up dead and the last (Sarah Durn) is never discovered.

The world premiere of the stage adaptation of the iconic horror film Paranormal Activity is set to deliver a unique theatrical experience. Felix Barrett, acclaimed director, and Levi Holloway, celebrated playwright, are the creative forces behind this ambitious project, currently in its final preparation stages at Leeds Playhouse.

Holloway, equally bleary-eyed, concurs, “We’re both very haunted,” he adds with a wry smile.
Despite their nocturnal challenges, Barrett and Holloway are deeply committed to transforming the chilling essence of Paranormal Activity into a compelling stage production. The death of the movie theater was greatly exaggerated. Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2 became the first movie in 11 months to gross over $1 billion at the worldwide box office, and in record time for an animated feature.
“There’s joy all around as Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 has crossed the coveted $1B milestone at the worldwide box office. With $1,014.8B through 19 days, this is the quickest time to the mark for an animated movie ever, besting the previous record holder, Frozen 2, which got there in 25. In October 1994, three student filmmakers disappeared in the woods near Burkitsville, Maryland while shooting a documentary. A year later, their footage was found.
That brief but iconic introductory text and the narrative that followed would captivate millions for decades. When “The Blair Witch Project” hit theaters in summer 1999, moviegoers were enthralled by the ill-fated fictional journey of three would-be documentarians — Heather Donahue (Rei Hance), Josh Leonard (Joshua Leonard), and Mike Williams (Michael Williams) — hunting down the truth behind a local Maryland myth. It was shocking; the analog realism of the then-obscure found footage genre instilled in viewers the sense that what they were witnessing was the last record of a real tragedy. The illusion was made even more palpable thanks to a marketing campaign that embraced the early internet with a rudimentary website, missing persons posters of the characters, and a TV mockumentary companion, “Curse of the Blair Witch,” that preceded the film’s release.

The “A Quiet Place” franchise has solidified its position as one of the most reliable horror properties at the box office, with its latest entry, “A Quiet Place: Day One,” surpassing expectations in its debut weekend. The prequel opened to an impressive $53 million domestically and $98 million globally, outperforming its predecessors and defying the typical challenges faced by spinoff stories.
This third installment in Paramount’s post-apocalyptic series has demonstrated the franchise’s enduring appeal, joining the ranks of successful horror properties like “The Conjuring,” “Paranormal Activity,” and “Insidious.” What sets “A Quiet Place” apart, however, is its consistency across three films, a rarity in the genre.
David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research, notes, “No series has been as consistent after three films as this. The hook — keep quiet or else — is going to carry it indefinitely into the future.”

"A Quiet Place” has become a horror franchise with few equals.
The third entry in Paramount’s post-apocalyptic series, “A Quiet Place: Day One,” beat expectations with $53 million domestically and $98 million globally in its box office debut. It landed the best start of the three films, above the original 2018 “A Quiet Place,” ($50 million in its opening) and the 2021 sequel, “A Quiet Place Part II”. The enduring appeal of the trio of films, the most recent entry serving as an origin story, signals that “A Quiet Place” has enough power to fill seats at multiplexes based on the strength of its name. It joins the company of other big horror properties, like “The Conjuring,” “Paranormal Activity” and “Insidious,” all of which remain popular but have experienced some diminishing returns over the course of many sequels and spinoffs.

The history of horrors knows a lot of follow-ups that explore the obstacles that led to the events of the original movies. Sometimes a prequel can even beat its source by a much more elaborate screenplay, atmosphere, and creepier horror elements.
Here are 6 horror prequels that are killing it, chosen by Redditors.
1. Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016)

Hey, it worked for Barbie.
Mattel’s next feature film based on a doll will be a live-action, theatrical Monster High movie written and produced by Akiva Goldsman and distributed by Universal Pictures. The gist of the Monster High fashion-doll line is that they are the children of iconic monsters, like Frankie Stein (the daughter of Frankenstein’s monster and his bride), Draculaura (the daughter of Dracula), and Clawdeen Wolf (the daughter of a werewolf mom and a human dad).
Goldsman’s banner Weed Road will produce the film. Goldsman, the Academy Award-winning screenwriter of “A Beautiful Mind,” is also a producer on Mattel Films’ upcoming Major Matt Mason movie starring Tom Hanks. The announcement of that toy adaptation, which is set up at Paramount Pictures, preceded “Barbie.”
Kevin McKeon and Arturo Thur De Koos will oversee the Monster High movie for Mattel; Greg Lessans has oversight for Weed Road.

Oscar-winning writer-producer Akiva Goldsman and his Weed Road are partnering with Mattel, Inc. and Universal Pictures to develop a live-action theatrical Monsters High film, based on the multimedia franchise of the same name.
We’re told that Goldsman is only producing, not writing, so the assignment remains open for now.
First introduced via a line of dolls in 2010, Monster High centers around a fictional high school attended by the teenage children of famous monsters. These characters, such as Draculaura (daughter of Dracula), Frankie Stein (daughter of Frankenstein’s monster), Clawdeen Wolf (daughter of the Werewolf) and Cleo de Nile (daughter of the Mummy), are designed to reflect the diverse and unique offspring of classic monster figures. Each brings their own personality, style, and background to the Monster High universe, creating a rich tapestry of monster heritage and high school drama.

Seven years after the release of “Creep 2,” Mark Duplass is ready to return to his dryly comedic found footage horror franchise.
The multi-hyphenate has announced that he completed production on “The Creep Tapes,” an episodic series that promises to introduce horror fans to a new collection of victims from the vault of Duplass’ nameless killer. The series, co-created by Duplass and “Creep” director Patrick Brice (who also directed every episode), is currently being shopped to buyers.
The first “Creep” film released in 2014 at the tail end of the found footage horror renaissance launched by “Paranormal Activity” in 2007. It starred Duplass as a killer who hired a filmmaker to document his actions for a day as a ploy to lure him into a dark trap. 2017’s “Creep 2” used a similar formula, with Duplass’ character taking a different name and working with a different filmmaker. [Update: Variety has confirmed that "Creep 3" is actually "The Creep Tapes," a new series! This article has been updated with additional information.]
Babe, wake up! New "Creep" sequel news just dropped! 10 years ago, Mark Duplass and Patrick Brice unleashed the found footage film "Creep," in which an aspiring filmmaker named Aaron (Brice) answers an ad posted on Craiglist by an allegedly terminally ill man named Josef (Duplass) looking to make videos for his unborn child to watch after he's passed. Aaron arrives to record Josef's "day in the life" videos believing he's doing something noble, but quickly realizes that there's something seriously wrong with the man who hired him for the job.
The film arrived seven years after the success of "Paranormal Activity" inspired an explosion of found footage horror, which at this point had jumped the shark in terms of practical believability. "Creep" dropped on Netflix and became a huge hit through word of mouth,...

Australian director George Miller made his first feature film, "Mad Max," in 1979. It was a very low-budget affair costing about $200,000. The film takes place in the near future when the Earth is running low on oil and civilization is just beginning to crumble. "Mad" Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson) is a road cop tasked with reigning in the chaos. "Mad Max" was decidedly low-fi, but it struck a chord with audiences, ultimately earning almost $100 million worldwide. It remains one of the most profitable movies of all time, comparable only to "The Blair Witch Project," "Paranormal Activity," and "Deep Throat." Miller would go on to make several sequels to "Mad Max" in 1981, 1985, and 2015. The fifth film in the series, "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," is hitting theaters this month, with a potential sixth entry, "Mad Max: The Wasteland," in the early planning stages.

Horrors are obviously one of the most demanded movie genres, as people love to get their nerves shaken by the scary tales. However, we’d dare to say you didn’t know these horror gems were so successful at the box office they earned 100 times their budgets.
Here are 5 such hits of the genre, now available online for streaming.
1. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
Where to watch: Prime
First comes one of the most influential horror films, as it’s the origin of both modern slashers and found-footage movies. Stephen King is the undisputed King of Horror, and his chilling narratives extend far beyond literature, regularly receiving film and television adaptations, some of which he personally works on.
But no matter how brilliant a writer Mr. King is, it's hard to deny that every artist is inspired by the works of others. That's why King, being a massive cinephile, often talks openly about the movies in the thriller or horror genre that have been influential to him.
The movie we're talking about today, however, didn't just influence the writer, it downright freaked him out, causing him to turn it off halfway through, because King was also high after the surgery. Quite a horrible experience if you ask us, though the movie in question was capable of scaring even a completely sober person.

Making a film in under 25 days is a monumental feat for a filmmaker. However, with clever budgeting, creativity, and resourcefulness from a talented cast and crew, films can be made in a few days and even in a few hours.
Victoria (2015) and Russian Ark (2002) were filmed in a single continuous shot, pushing the boundaries of a well-thought-out planned production.
Many of these come from first-time independent filmmakers, including The Blair Witch Project (1998); Paranormal Activity ( 2007), Clerks (1994); Mind, Body & Soul (2024); El Mariachi (1992); Get Out (2017); Napoleon Dynamite (2004) and Fruitvale Station (2013). These movies stand as testaments to the power of resourceful directing, proving that films can be made quickly and effectively on any budget.
Take a look back at movies that were made in under 23 days that were released at the box office.

"The Blair Witch Project" wasn't the first found footage horror film, but it is largely responsible for the explosion in found footage horror films over the last 25 years. A big reason for that? The numbers. Directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, "Blair Witch" was shot over just eight days with an initial outlay of just $35,000. It was bought by Artisan Entertainment for $1 million, and the studio spent around $6-8 million marketing it (per The Hollywood Reporter). The movie went on to gross more than $248 million at the box office.
It's a studio executive's dream to land a project like that, and studios have been chasing the high of "The Blair Witch Project" ever since. There have been two "Blair Witch" movie sequels, with another "reimagining" recently announced by Blumhouse and Lionsgate. There have been books, comic books, and video games. It's a full-blown horror franchise that hasn't stopped making...

Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon was supposed to be heading into production on Scream 7 soon – but that project has turned out to be so troubled, he had to activate his ejector seat and get out of there. While he has since been replaced on Scream 7 by Kevin Williamson, he has been busy lining up other genre projects, signing on to direct the werewolf thriller Big Bad and the “fast-paced thriller” Drop. Coming our way from Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes, the production company team that has previously brought us the Purge franchise, Drop is moving forward first. We previously heard that it’s set to star Meghann Fahy, who was recently seen on season 2 of The White Lotus, and now Deadline reports that Fahy is being joined in the cast by Violett Beane (The Flash), Brandon Sklenar (1923), and newcomer Jacob Robinson. Due to a complex series of anthropological mishaps, the Wayans Brothers are a huge deal in Brazil. Around these parts, White Chicks is considered a national treasure by a lot of people, so it stands to reason that Brazilian audiences would continue to accompany the Wayans’ comedic output long after North America had stopped taking them seriously as comedic titans.
This is the only reason why I originally watched Michael Tiddes and Marlon Wayans’ 2013 horror spoof A Haunted House – appropriately known as “Paranormal Inactivity” in South America – despite having abandoned this kind of movie shortly after the excellent Scary Movie 3. Under $5 million; no first time directors (unless there’s a named producer); actually good. These used to be the tenets by which Blumhouse built its name. But oh how things have changed. It’s looking increasingly like the little studio that could is making a land grab for virtually every property in horror-dom.
The latest trailer to drop from Blumhouse is for Speak No Evil, a remake of the 2022 Danish film of the same name which caused a big buzz when it hit Shudder for being so utterly and depressingly grim. As soon as Saw X, the tenth entry in the Saw franchise (you can read our review Here), was released last September, franchise producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules were already talking about the potential of a Saw XI. The official announcement came in December, along with a release date: September 27th. Get ready to return to the Black Hills woods of Maryland, because the Blair Witch is back. The horror franchise, which started in 1999 with "The Blair Witch Project," became a game-changer, popularizing the found footage genre and becoming one of the most successful horror stories ever made. Even a quarter of a century later, the original "Blair Witch" remains fascinating and mysterious.
The tale of people going to the woods and being hunted by an evil entity continues to be enticing to executives wanting another surprise hit, even if it never quite seems to work out. The last attempt came in the form of a "Blair Witch" sequel in 2016, which was better than it could have been but failed to make an impact. That being said, the "Blair Witch" video game was pretty good.
Now, Blumhouse announced it is partnering with Lionsgate to reimagine "Blair Witch" for a new generation.

"Paranormal Activity” juggernaut Blumhouse is returning to the Og found footage franchise, “The Blair Witch Project.”
During CinemaCon 2024, Lionsgate announced a multi-picture pact with Blumhouse to reimagine other horror classics from the Lionsgate library, starting with the iconic 1999 indie. No other specific titles from the library were unveiled on during Wednesday’s CinemaCon presentation.
“I’m very grateful to Adam and the team at Lionsgate for letting us play in their sandbox. I’m a huge admirer of ‘The Blair Witch Project,’ which brought the idea of found footage horror to mainstream audiences and became a true cultural phenomenon,” Blumhouse founder and CEO Jason Blum said. “I don’t think there would have been a ‘Paranormal Activity’ had there not first been a ‘Blair Witch,’ so this feels like a truly special opportunity and I’m excited to see where it leads.”

Horror maestro Jason Blum is reviving “The Blair Witch Project” for Lionsgate.
It’s a fitting pair because Blumhouse is known for its low-budget approach to terror. And the original “Blair Witch Project” had such a minuscule price tag it became one of the most profitable movies ever. Blumhouse is behind the skin-crawling “Paranormal Activity” and “The Purge” franchises, as well as newer breakout hits like “M3GAN” and “Five Nights at Freddy’s.” Blumhouse movies have generated nearly $6 billion at the worldwide box office — and that’s without spending all that much on production costs.
The announcement was made at CinemaCon, the annual movie theater trade show that’s currently taking place in Las Vegas. This film marks the first in a multi-picture agreement with Blumhouse reimagining horror classics for Lionsgate. Blumhouse, which has a first-look deal with Universal Pictures, recently collaborated with Lionsgate on “Imaginary,” a thriller about a sinister teddy bear from childhood.
