Nielsen’s latest update has plenty of good news for Netflix as well, which now owns more total TV viewing than Paramount’s streaming and TV outlets combined.
The highs just keep getting higher for the medium of streaming. The television ratings firm Nielsen has released its monthly The Gauge report, which measures how American viewers are watching TV and which platforms are receiving the most viewership. In the month of June, streaming accounted for 40.3% of all TV watched in the United States, the first time it has ever accounted for more than 40% of viewing time in the history of The Gauge report.
Key Details: Disney+, Tubi, Prime Video, Netflix, and Hulu all accounted for more than 2% of all TV watched in June. Netflix is now fourth among all media companies in aggregated TV usage. The onset of summer vacation has helped streaming rise, as kids have more time to stream content.

When How I Met Your Mother debuted in 2005, it became popular right away. Under the direction of Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, the show featured Josh Radnor’s character Ted Mosby as he narrated his children the story of how he met their mother, captivating viewers with its unique narrative technique. In addition to Radnor, Neil Patrick Harris’s portrayal of the well-known womanizer Barney Stinson gave the show the necessary comic edge.

Perhaps the best thing to come out of Hollywood's never-ending attempts to turn hit TV shows into movies is Phil Lord & Chris Miller's hilarious take on "21 Jump Street" starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. Taking a cue from the beloved TV series that premiered in 1987 with cast members like Johnny Depp and Richard Grieco, the 2012 action comedy follows the awkward but smart Morton Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and dimwitted, popular star athlete Greg Jenko (Channing Tatum) in their post-high school lives as they become unlikely friends and partners on the police force when they're assigned to an undercover assignment to bust a drug ring in high school.
"21 Jump Street" has just enough meta sensibilities in the story to poke fun at Hollywood's formula of turning TV shows into movies without becoming a full-blown parody, and it also features delightful supporting turns from Brie Larson, Dave Franco, Nick Offerman,...

When director Ron Howard was looking to tell Jim Henson’s story for his next documentary, he sat down with Henson’s surviving children for their permission to tell the story of the man behind “The Muppets.”
Not only did they give him their full approval and access to Henson’s archives, but they also appear in the documentary “Jim Henson Idea Man.”
The film combines archival material with talking head interviews with Rita Moreno, Jennifer Connelly, Henson’s children and longtime collaborator Frank Oz. There is plenty of archival footage that helps tell Henson’s story, and there’s a look at his 1965 Oscar-nominated short film “Time Piece.”
The main thread was the family story.
Speaking with Variety, Howard said after meeting Henson’s children, Lisa, Cheryl, Brian and Heather, he was fascinated by the stories they told about their upbringing. “I said, ‘Well, we can celebrate the characters we know.

New ad formats will help Disney+ boost revenues from its streaming service even higher.
On-demand streaming offers viewers a way to consume video using features they never had watching linear TV. It also gives providers ways to reach customers with ads using methods they’ve never used before, and now Disney is getting in on that evolution by introducing new advertising formats on its streaming services. Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ subscribers will soon find the new interactive ads on their interface, if they haven’t noticed them already, as Disney tries to boost engagement —and by extension, revenues — on its on-demand platforms.
Key Details: Disney is rolling out shoppable ads, as well as advergames on its streaming services. The goal is to make ads “impactful” for Disney streaming customers, according to executives. Amazon, Roku, and Fubo are among other companies that have launched interactive ads in recent months. Sign Up Now $7.99+ / month disneyplus.

For decades, Jim Henson’s Muppets have been tucked in and around the Disney Parks. Sometimes they are front-and-center, like Muppet*Vision 3D. Other times they can be hard to track down, like the Muppet Mobile Lab. But one thing is for sure – they never fail to pull a chuckle out of the audience.
The documentary Jim Henson: Idea Man, recently released on Disney+, chronicles the life and career of the Muppets’ creative visionary. But Henson’s life ended way too young, at age 53, just before the first Muppets moved into Walt Disney World. In honor of Henson’s life and in celebration of his beloved creatures, let’s take a look through their Muppetational history in the Disney Parks.

When Ryan Condal decamped for the U.K. in 2020 to begin work on a Game of Thrones spinoff, it hadn’t occurred to the screenwriter that he, his wife and their two young children wouldn’t return to Los Angeles anytime soon. “It was about two years later, when the show came out and everybody watched it, that I finally thought, ‘Oh, Ok, we’re going to be here for a while,’ ” he says.

Marlon Brando is probably best known for portraying the role of Don Vito Corleone in the 1972 film The Godfather. After starring alongside Al Pacino in the ’72 film, Brando starred alongside Robert De Niro in the 2001 film titled The Score.

However, filming for The Score was easier said than done. With inflated egos and a director who was marking his debut in drama films, Brando and director Frank Oz did not get along at all on the sets of the 2001 film! It was Robert De Niro who had to become the middleman for both of them while the filming took place.

The visionary man behind The Muppets and Sesame Street took up puppetry as a way to break into television in his early 20s. That’s just one of the fun facts about Jim Henson’s extraordinary career in Ron Howard’s Disney+ documentary, Jim Henson Idea Man but his legacy came at the expense of his personal life and health.

Rating: 5.0/5.0
Jim Henson was born in Mississippi and raised there and in Maryland. He answered an ad for a Washington, D.C. television station in the 1950s … they were looking for a puppeteer … and astoundingly, Henson got the job with no previous puppetry experience. Partnering with Jane Nebel, who would eventually become his wife, the two created the beginnings of the Muppet phenomenon by gearing their comedy towards adults. Eventually forming a company, Jim and Jane were able to get by through commercials and TV work through the 1960s, until Henson practically invented Sesame Street in 1969. Always itching for new avenues of creativity, he launched “The Muppet Show” in...

Plot: “Jim Henson Idea Man” takes us into the mind of this singular creative visionary, from his early years puppeteering on local television to the worldwide success of Sesame Street, The Muppet Show, and beyond. Featuring unprecedented access to Jim’s personal archives, Howard brings us a fascinating and insightful look at a complex man whose boundless imagination inspired the world.
Review: It’s hard to properly quantify the importance of someone like Jim Henson. The value of education is obvious but the ability to make it fun for kids is a tough nut to crack. Whether it’s through Sesame Street or The Muppets, Henson’s work has taught generations. That’s not to mention the emotional maturity brought on by films like The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. So it’s well overdue that we’re treated to a documentary, lovingly portraying one of the most remarkable minds in Hollywood.

The Oscar-winning film-maker discusses his documentary about the legendary puppeteer and his unwavering desire to experiment
Before he became the world’s most famous puppeteer – the man responsible for The Muppets and Big Bird; and turning David Bowie into the Goblin King in Labyrinth – Jim Henson was an experimental film-maker.
In his Oscar-nominated 1965 short, Time Piece, Henson stars as a man transcending time and space, the percussive beats of ticking clocks, heartbeats and other machinery creating the rhythms for the film’s montage. In a film that takes cues from Georges Méliès and Dziga Vertov, Henson goes from playing hospital patient to Tarzan to George Washington. He was a man who could seemingly be anyone, and do anything, much like Henson himself.

Jim Henson: Idea Man is a story about how rare it is to be in the presence of a true original and such pure creative genius. Jim Henson was not just an expert at marketing his brand; he was certainly no fool in that department. He was an artist of the highest order. Mr. Henson was a technological innovator, allowing his puppets to emote and move in unprecedented ways.
Mr. Henson then brought those talents to Hollywood films, contributing to projects such as Labyrinth and the experimental The Dark Crystal. He brought joy to millions of families’ homes with The Muppets and Fraggle Rock. Perhaps most importantly, his work on Sesame Street left a lasting impact on children by teaching them skills that went beyond the classroom.
Move over, Mr. Rogers, Mr. Henson was America’s empathetic hero. He just let his friends like Kermit take the credit.

Being away from home allows room for perspective, and for a group of U.S.-based documentary experts who made the trip to Cannes, the glass remains half full, despite the headwinds. The closure of Participant, Showtime Docs, CNN Films scaling back and belt-tightening across the board have led many to posit that a Golden Age of documentary films has ended. A discussion in the American Pavilion at the Cannes Film Festival begged the question: If the Golden Age is over, what comes next?
For the assembled speakers, there was an acceptance of the challenges, but also a desire to take a long view and to look to the future.
“With the market retracting and some distribution outlets not being replaced by others, we’re forced to be creative again about how we get these films out to market, how we find audiences,” said Cinetic Media’s Jason Ishikawa during the Deadline-hosted panel.

It may not be too much of an exaggeration to say that Jim Henson came up with the concept for an immersive video dome long before Sphere bubbled up in Las Vegas.
In the mid-1960s he developed an idea for a nightclub he called Cyclia – “the entertainment experience of the future” – that would feature crystal panels throughout the ceiling, floor and walls onto which films would be projected.
“Once an hour, a woman in a white leotard would rise from a pedestal in the center of the floor to have film projected on her body as she danced,” writes author Brian Jay Jones in Jim Henson: A Biography.
For better or worse, the psychedelia-inspired concept never became a reality. But it’s an example of the restless imagination that propelled Henson throughout his life. The incredible range of Henson’s creative urges come into focus in Ron Howard’s documentary Jim Henson Idea Man,...

It’s fitting that Ron Howard’s documentary “Jim Henson Idea Man” gets its name from the man himself. During an early bit of voiceover, we hear the “Sesame Street” and “Muppets” creator describe his take on just what it is he does: Idea man. Nothing more, nothing less.
As the film winds on, others are more lofty in their estimations. Henson was a “man with a purpose,” a superhuman, someone for whom terms like “incredibly productive” can’t do justice. He “wanted to do more than was humanly possible,” one of Henson’s adult children tells us. Howard’s film reminds us how true that was during Henson’s lifetime and into his continuing legacy.
Henson was a puppeteer and creator of everything from The Muppets to “Fraggle Rock,” an animator and actor, a TV genius (Henson’s fingerprints are still on every element of “Sesame Street”), and a filmmaker.

Thanks to Netflix‘s upcoming animated series Exploding Kittens, Tom Ellis is trading his horns for a halo by becoming God after playing Lucifer Morningstar in the fan-favorite supernatural drama Lucifer. Netflix parted the heavens on Thursday to reveal an Exploding Kittens trailer, teasing the animated series based on the popular card game Matthew Inman, Elan Lee, and Shane Small created. Netflix’s Exploding Kittens is an adult animated series starring Tom Ellis and Sasheer Zamata as two rotund housecats on opposite ends of a holy war.
In Netflix’s Exploding Kittens trailer, God is transformed into Godcat (Tom Ellis) and cast down to Earth to live with a dysfunctional family while reconnecting with his humanity. Following the introduction of Hulu on Disney+, ESPN’s live sports will be next to join the company’s flagship streamer.
The streaming consolidation of Disney’s disparate content offerings continues. Following the Hulu on Disney+ integration earlier this year, on Tuesday’s second-quarter earnings call, CEO Bob Iger announced that soon, Disney+ subscribers will be able to watch select ESPN sporting events inside the flagship streamer. This move is set to serve as a preliminary step ahead of the launch of ESPN’s standalone streaming service in the fall of 2025.
Key Details: Disney+ will introduce a tile of limited ESPN programming by the end of 2024. This move is designed to prepare subscribers for the eventual launch of the standalone ESPN platform. Jim Henson was certainly a one-of-a-kind genius, a creative, childlike spirit who lived to bring more joy into the world. But with his growing fame thanks to the likes of his work with The Muppets and his various movies, his life became much more complicated. Now Ron Howard is bringing his story to our screens via a new Disney+ original documentary called Jim Henson Idea Man. Watch the trailer below, but don't blame us if it starts getting dusty in the immediate vicinity…

Customers can access the MyDisney site to manage their accounts and marketing preferences across Disney services like Disney+ and Hulu.
Disney has the ability to offer different types of entertainment experiences in ways that none of its competitors can. The company has its TV and movie studios, of course, which churn out dozens of titles per year that eventually make their way to streamers like Disney+ and Hulu, but it also has its theme parks, cruise ships, as well as online shopping choices that customers can access from anywhere. It can be confusing to keep login information for websites that deliver these experiences and products straight, which is why Disney is rolling out the new “MyDisney” unified login ability to allow consumers to access all their various Disney accounts with a single username and passowrd.
The MyDisney experience will allow customers to log into Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ with one email and password combo.

Data from Accenture shows that 52% of respondents said recommended content on streaming platforms does not match their interests.
“Spoiled for choice” takes on a different meaning when applied to streaming services. Indeed, in this context, the phrase might be more accurate if it were changed to “overwhelmed with choice,” at least according to a new survey from the global professional services firm Accenture. The new report has a wide range of important data points for streaming providers like Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video, but perhaps its most crucial findings are in regard to issues of content discovery and customer frustration.
Accenture’s survey found that 54% of customers spend six or more minutes finding something new to stream, and 30% browse for 10 or more minutes. More than half of customers say recommended content rows do not provide titles that match their interests. The data also found that 56% of customers report being frustrated...

New data from Ampere Analysis shows that shows like ‘The Last of Us’ have helped raise public perception of video game adaptations.
Many fans of the “Fallout” video game series are likely already burning through the first season of the TV adaptation on Prime Video. “Fallout” Season 1 bowed on Amazon’s streaming service on April 10, and initial reviews suggest that critics are just as excited about the show as those who spent thousands hours playing the games. Adaptations of video games have often been a tricky nut for studios to crack, but new data from Ampere Analysis shows that as the quality of such projects has improved, so too has their popularity.
Ampere’s data found that search volumes for video game adaptations have risen, while comic book adaptation searches have fallen. Fan perception of the quality of comic book adaptations has fallen, and studios are responding by making big changes to their comic franchises.

As streaming prices soar higher we’re always looking for ways to cut costs. One of the smartest ways to save is with an annual plan. Not all services offer them, but if you can afford the early financial hit up front, you can save a bundle over the long haul.
In some cases, streaming services are available as add-ons to Prime Video. We recommend starting with a free trial that way. You’ll be able to sample the service for a full week. Unfortunately, you are not able to add annual plans to Prime Video add-ons.

It’s sometimes hard to imagine that actors you see on screen are just like you and me, but it’s really true, and nobody is a better example of normalcy in extraordinary circumstances than Tyler Hynes.
If you’re already a fan, this isn’t news to you. You may be a part of his social media circle, which includes frequent visits from the talented man, as he not only connects with those who hold him dear but also enjoys it.
Many talented professionals in the entertainment field will tell you that bringing joy to others is why they do the work, but Tyler takes it a step further by being so incredibly connected.
When he says, “I just want to live a good life with good people, see if I can do some good and make some folks possibly a little happy,” he couldn’t be more sincere.
