It’s no secret that the Covid-19 pandemic upended the movie theater business in 2020, but in the years since, the industry has slowly climbed back. In 2021, 14 movies were able to cross the coveted $100 million mark at the U.S. box office. In 2022, that number jumped up to 18 films. And in 2023, there were a whopping 25 such blockbusters. So how many features released during the current 2024 calendar year will end up becoming box office behemoths? Stay tuned.
To date, the biggest money-makers of the year are a pair of highly anticipated sequels: “Inside Out 2” and “Dune: Part Two.” Scroll through our gallery above (or click here for direct access) to see all of the 2024 box office hits so far that made more than $100 million in the United States. The number will continue to grow as high-profile movies like “Wicked” and “Mufasa: The Lion King” will be released later in the year.

As Deadpool and Wolverine continues its box office domination, Marvel Studios' first R-rated movie has smashed another record.
According to Deadline, the outrageous superhero team-up took in $21.5 million-plus on Monday at the domestic box office, giving it the best Monday ever for an R-rated film (beating the original Deadpool's $19.7M back in 2016) and the fourth-best of all time after Spider-Man 2, Barbie and The Dark Knight.
In addition, the threequel's promotional partner campaign was reportedly worth $135M in media value.
Though global numbers haven't been released just yet, the movie's $438.3 million debut means it's almost certainly approaching the $500 million milestone (if it hasn't cleared it already) and, short of a massive second-week drop, should reach $1 billion worldwide by the end of its theatrical run.
Update: Box office updates are in, and with overseas takings, Deadpool and Wolverine has now officially passed half a billion worldwide after just 5 days in theaters!

Ryan Gosling dominates the romance genre when it comes to films. He has starred in several rom-com and heavy drama movies, but one truly stands out from the bunch: the Oscar-winning title La La Land with Emma Stone.

It brought so many tears to the eyes, but if anyone wants a heavier, more realistic drama then fans should check out another Gosling film with Michelle Williams: Blue Valentine (2010). This one truly tugs at the heartstrings.

The final figures are in for Deadpool & Wolverine's opening weekend and the Marvel Studios threequel ended up exceeding expectations with a staggering $211 million debut at the North American box office. That's $6 million higher than yesterday's $205 million estimates.
With the sixth biggest 3-day opening weekend of all time, the threequel becomes only the ninth movie in history to open north of $200 million.
Perhaps the craziest thing is that Deadpool & Wolverine will surpass Logan's entire $226.3 million run later today; then, in a matter of days, it will sail past Deadpool 2 ($324.6 million), Joker ($335.5 million), and Deadpool ($363.7 million).
$1 billion is surely right around the corner, particularly as early signs point to it becoming the highest-grossing R-Rated movie ever by next Sunday (beating a record held by The Passion of the Christ for over 20 years).
At the worldwide box office, a $211 million 3-day weekend means Deadpool & Wolverine has grossed over $444 million in 5 days.

Pop sensation Billie Eilish is set to embark on a worldwide arena tour this fall, which will kick off in Quebec City, Canada, on September 29 and conclude in Dublin on July 27, 2025.
The tour will take her across North America, Australia, and Europe. A percentage of the ticket proceeds will go to Reverb, a nonprofit which aims to educate musicians and their fans about environmental sustainability.
In April 2024, Eilish announced her highly anticipated third studio album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, along with the statement that she would not release any singles ahead of the album. She said, “I wanna give it to you all at once. I truly could not be more proud of this album.” The album was released on May 17.

It wasn’t until about 10 a.m. Pt on Saturday that Disney’s distribution team realized the near-impossible was within reach: Deadpool & Wolverine was going to cross the $200 million mark in its domestic opening, an unimaginable feat for an R-rated pic. Case in point: the biggest R-rated opening until now was the $133.7 million collected by the first Deadpool in 2016.
By Sunday morning, the news was official. The Marvel Studios movie opened to an estimated $205 million, the eighth-biggest debut of all time among any film and by far the biggest launch for an R-rated film, not adjusted for inflation. It only got better from there. Traffic was bigger than expected, pushing the final opening number to $211 million, the sixth-biggest launch of all time in North America.

Marvel’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” (Disney), like “Twisters” (Universal) and “Inside Out 2” (Disney) before it, outpaced all projections. Yes, it broke many records in its $205 million U.S./Canada debut, but even more exciting is it represents a bigger trend toward overperforming titles.
The more breathless box-office reporters will include unadjusted (read: misleading) grosses, but it achieved at least two milestones free and clear. It is the second-biggest opening in the post-Covid era (only “Spider-Man: No Way Home” at $260 million is higher), and it is by far the biggest debut of any R-rated release. Yes, it’s $43 million more than “Barbie” opened to last year.
Even better, the weekend’s total gross of $278 million is this year’s best, by a margin of $74 million. It’s the second-best weekend since 2023, beaten only by the historic “Barbie”/”Oppenheimer.” Year to date grosses stand at $4.7 billion, 17 percent below last year.

Five months after Hollywood’s actors went back to work, the UK film industry continues to suffer with a reported 52% out of work.
The Times newspaper recalls the effect of the actors’ strike when dozens of film and TV production projects were halted in the UK, with sets closed and tens of thousands of professionals put out of work. It puts the number of UK staff in the film and TV production sector at 66,000.

Current box office ‘it’ man Glen Powell has been tapped to guest star on the first of two “Family Guy” holiday specials set to run exclusively on Hulu. In a Halloween-themed episode that will premiere on October 14, Powell will play “Patrick McCloskey,” the reigning champion in Quahog’s annual Pumpkin Contest. Also guesting on that episode: Derek Jacobi as the voice of Stewie’s beloved teddy bear, “Rupert.”
Per the logline, the Halloween episode follows Peter and his friends as they “aim to unseat the reigning champion (Glen Powell) in Quahog’s annual Pumpkin Contest by any means necessary.” The Powell and Jacobi castings were announced Saturday during the “Family Guy” panel at San Diego Comic-Con. (After the Halloween special will be a Christmas event as well.)

Over the past 15 years, writer, director, producer and actor Greta Gerwig has been one of the key figures in the independent film movement. After her early years as a star of the mumblecore film movement, Gerwig teamed up with her professional and life partner, writer/director Noah Baumbach, for a series of three films that broke through to general audiences, garnered widespread critical acclaim, and generated a Golden Globe nomination for Gerwig in “Frances Ha.”
But after she co-directed 2008’s romance “Nights and Weekends,” it seemed inevitable that Gerwig would return to the director’s chair, this time solo, and she did so in a spectacular fashion with her 2017 debut feature “Lady Bird.” Her coming-of-age story, set in Gerwig’s home town of Sacramento, earned five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, as well as two individual nominations for Gerwig for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Cosplayers have taken over Comic-Con, with flocks of costumers showing up and showing out at Sdcc this year.
After a few days of photographing the cosplaying crowds, Variety has discovered the biggest trends in the costuming world. While last year’s 2023 cosplay offerings included tributes to everything from “Barbie” to “Everything Everywhere All at Once” to “Cobra Kai,” this year’s event at Sdcc is bigger and better than ever.
New to the scene this year were even more Beetlejuice iterations, as the ghost with the most’s sequel, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” is set to open Sept. 6. The film, starring Jenna Ortega, Winona Ryder, Michael Keaton and Monica Bellucci, is directed by Tim Burton.
This year marks the first regular convention for Sdcc since the pandemic, after last year saw the SAG-AFTRA strike force nearly every studio to pull their panels from the conventions. The event, running from July 25-28, kicked...

Ice Spice has noted in several interviews that she was a popular girl in high school, well before she started releasing music. For the past 10 weeks, a Hollywood producer has faced off against a studio in a Santa Monica courtroom stemming from a civil case that has caused barely a news ripple.
Back in January 2018, “Lone Survivor” producer Norton Herrick sued toy giant Mattel over a 2018 contract dispute regarding the production of Mattel’s reality competition show “The Toy Box,” which ran on ABC for two seasons.
In his initial complaint, Herrick claimed he brought a project to Mattel in June 2014 called “Playmakers,” which revolved around contestants pitching their toys to child judges and winning prize money. According to the suit, Mattel executives loved the idea and indicated they were moving forward with it only to pursue a replica without his involvement. The “Barbie” producer ultimately produced a similar version of the concept in 2017 with “The Toy Box.”
The case has garnered almost no press coverage over the ensuing six-plus years, perhaps...

Live concert experiences of the music for films, TV shows, and video games, with full orchestras, are nothing new. Screenings with a full onstage orchestra celebrate watershed scores, create communal experiences of beloved musical themes, and get people to see live music — to say nothing of a hellacious way to end “Tár.”
It’s not surprising that a juggernaut film like “Barbie” would eventually have a second life as a go-to for amphitheater-sized live screenings. But IndieWire is happy to report that “Barbie’s” concert era has come together in the most “Barbie” way possible. Folks looking to see the film with a live instrumental performance of Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt’s score — and their songs — will be treated to the Barbieland Sinfonietta, an all-female orchestra conducted by Macy Schmidt, at the Hollywood Bowl.

Earlier this year, a collection of text messages Ice Spice sent to a once-close friend surfaced online. In them, the Bronx rapper vented about a frustrating process she was experiencing while negotiating contract details with Nicki Minaj. She called the rap veteran “ungrateful” and expressed needing to prioritize her mental health. Neither of the rappers publicly acknowledged the leak when it happened. Still, the internet theorized endlessly about where they stand with one another. In her Rolling Stone cover story, Ice finally clears the air.

Pixar’s sequel to its 2015 hit has now overtaken Frozen II and Barbie in global ticket sales, reaching $1bn in only 19 days
Inside Out 2 has overtaken Frozen II to become the highest-grossing animation of all time. Pixar’s sequel to its 2015 smash about emotions battling for primacy inside the head of a preteen girl has taken $1.46bn (£1.13bn) over its first six weeks of release; Disney’s follow-up to its wintry hit took $1.45bn (£1.12bn) over its entire theatrical run in 2019.
A third Disney film, the 2019 remake of The Lion King, made $1.65bn (£1.28bn) but was categorised by Disney as live-action, despite being computer-generated. Nonetheless, even if that film were on the list, the odds of Inside Out 2 bumping it down in coming weeks look high.

'Inside Out 2' has become the highest-grossing animated film of all time. The Pixar flick topped the previous record-holder 'Frozen II' – which brought in $1.45 billion during its 2019 theatrical run – after it generated $601 million in the U.S. and $861 million globally, bringing the sequel's total box office earnings to $1.46 billion. As well as crossing this milestone, the picture also broke another major record earlier in July after it topped 'Barbie's' global ticket sales, which has cemented the animated blockbuster as the 13th biggest movie in history.Michael O’Leary, president and CEO of the National Association of Theatre Owners, told Variety: "The film’s stunning global success once again illustrates that audiences the world over will respond to compelling, entertaining movies, and that they want to enjoy them on the big screen."The film – which cost $200 million to make – is currently trailing behind Disney's 2019 remake...

Animated motion picture history is upon us, friends! Pixar‘s Inside Out 2 is the highest-grossing animated film ever after surpassing Disney’s Frozen 2 at the global box office. The emotionally charged sequel achieved this milestone after six weeks of release, with a total domestic value of $601 million and $861 million internationally, totaling $1.46 billion! This astonishing achievement unseats Disney’s Frozen 2 after the sing-a-long sequel banked $1.45 billion at the box office. Disney’s The Lion King remake made an astounding $1.65M, but the Jon Favreau-directed film is technically a live-action CGI hybrid.
Looking at the numbers, Inside Out 2 beat Greta Gerwig’s Barbie in ticket sales, becoming the 13th-biggest movie ever. It is also the fastest animated movie to surpass the $1 billion mark after 19 days of release. Moreover, Pixar’s sequel is the highest-grossing film of 2024.
Inside Out 2 is one of the biggest Hollywood successes of all time for many factors.

Brittany Aldean famously fought with Maren Morris on social media in 2022. Brittany, who has been married to country singer Jason Aldean since 2015, made a post thanking her parents for not changing her gender during her tomboy phase.
The post was met with backlash, particularly from singers Maren Morris and Cassadee Pope, who felt it was transphobic. Shade was thrown on social media by all parties. The feud has died down now, but Brittany is ready to tell her side of the story.
Brittany Aldean Thinks She Was An ‘Easy Target’
Brittany and Jason Aldean were guests on the Try That In A Small Town podcast earlier this week. According to Brittany, she’d never spoken to Maren Morris before the singer attacked her on social media. The stay-at-home mom wondered if it happened because she’s an “easy target” who only has social media as a platform instead of a stage like the singer.

It's official: "Inside Out 2" is now the biggest animated movie of all time at the box office. After just five weeks in theaters and a run for the ages under its belt, Pixar's sequel has now amassed $1.46 billion worldwide, according to a press release from Disney. That puts it just ahead of 2019's "Frozen II" ($1.45 billion worldwide) to become the new champion of animation at the box office, as well as the 13th highest-grossing movie ever overall, unadjusted for inflation. While there is a small caveat that we'll get to in a moment, this is a huge deal for a slew of reasons.
Director Kelsey Mann's "Inside Out 2" has not left the top three on the domestic charts since it premiered on June 12. It had already set a record for an animated film, crossing the $1 billion mark globally and becoming the first movie since "Barbie" to reach that milestone.

Ecstatic. Incredible. Gleeful. Overjoyed. Take your pick.
Pixar’s Inside Out 2 has iced out fellow Disney release Frozen II to become the top-grossing Hollywood animated film of all time at the worldwide box office after finishing Tuesday with $1.462 billion, not adjusted for inflation. The film’s domestic total stands at $601 million, while it has grossed $861.8 million internationally.
Disney Animation’s Frozen II topped out at $1.451 billion in 2019. It now rests at No. 2 on the all-time animated list followed by Illumination and Universal’s video game adaptation The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.361 billion), the first Frozen ($1.274 billion), Pixar’s Incredibles 2 ($1.242 billion), Illumination’s Minions ($1.157 billion), Toy Story 4 ($1.072 billion), Despicable Me 3 ($1.032 billion) and Finding Dory ($1 billion).
Among all films, Inside Out 2 laughed its way past Warner Bros.’ 2023 summer juggernaut Barbie ($1.446 billion) on Monday to land at No. 13 on the list of all time grossing films, animated or otherwise.

On the anniversary of Margot Robbie’s record-breaking Barbie, another film is set to conquer the box office with insane projections by industry experts. Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine will see both him return as Deadpool after six years and Hugh Jackman return as Wolverine after retirement.
The film is reportedly projected to earn a smashing opening of $360 million worldwide. This is the first MCU film to release since the box office disaster The Marvels, which had a terrible $206 million collection in its lifetime. The most-anticipated movie of the year might just wake Marvel up from its slump.

Deadpool can’t die. If he were a character in Greek mythology, that might be a source of tragedy, but in Wade Wilson’s scuzzy corner of the Marvel universe, it functions as a catalyst for off-color comedy instead. Last time the trash-mouthed mercenary headlined a movie, Deadpool could be seen chugging drain cleaner and trying to nuke himself into oblivion — a stunt that sent his extended middle finger flying in Wolverine’s direction. The two heroes have had a long-running rivalry, since both were given regenerative healing powers via the Weapons-x program, but only Wolverine could make grown men cry. Until now.
The laughs are a given, but not the misty-eyed reaction to the final minutes of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which is by far the most fan-service sequel released under the Marvel banner — and that’s saying something, since the comic book empire panders even harder to its flock than the faith-based industry does.

The current range for domestic on the new Deadpool movie directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman is $160M-$170M, destined to be the biggest R-rated opening of all time, unseating the original Deadpool‘s $132.4M.
