Keep the hope alive, St. Elmo’s fans! Rob Lowe revealed the current status of the St. Elmo’s Fire sequel following the release of the highly-anticipated Brat Pack documentary Brats. “We’ve met with the studio, and I have been talking about doing it for about four months,” Lowe told Entertainment Tonight. He noted that the Brats documentary “only added to the excitement around it.” He continued, “But it’s very, very, very, very, very early stages. So we will see.” Back in June 2024, Deadline revealed that Sony, the production company behind the original film, was “exploring the possibility of making a new version” of St. Elmo’s Fire. The sequel would “hinge on reuniting original cast members.” Lowe is among the St. Elmo’s Fire pack, along with Andrew McCarthy, Ally Sheedy, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Emilio Estevez, and Mare Winningham. The film, directed by Joel Schumacher, was released in 1985 and...

Rob Lowe is no stranger to politics. The actor starred on The West Wing for four seasons as Sam Seaborn, the deputy White House Communications Director. So why wouldn’t Lowe want to join Kamala Harris on the campaign trail as her running mate?
During an appearance on tt3444938 autoThe Tonight Show, Lowe threw his (fictional) hat in the ring to be Harris’ potential vice president. The actor interrupted host Jimmy Fallon’s monologue with a faux audition, proclaiming, “I’ll do it.”

With the start of new seasons, both The Boys and House of the Dragon returned to Nielsen’s streaming charts for the week of June 10-16. Neither one could reach the heights of Bridgerton, however, as the Netflix drama zoomed back to the No. 1 overall spot with the release of season three’s second half.
Bridgerton amassed 3.47 billion minutes of viewing for the week — the biggest single-week total for any show so far this year, beating the 3.04 billion for Fool Me Once in early January. Almost 2.5 billion of Bridgerton’s minutes, or more than 70 percent of the total, were for the four episodes that premiered June 13.
The Boys also opened its fourth season on Prime Video on June 13, and the show grabbed 1.19 billion minutes of watch time for the week (including viewing of previous seasons). That’s the largest one-week total for the show since Nielsen began releasing weekly streaming...

Anthony Michael Hall was asked to be part of Brats but turned down the opportunity.
“I was asked to be a part of it, but you know what, I’ll tell you my attitude is you have to wish everyone success,” Hall told TV Insider. “It was just something I chose not to do because I’m always trying to move forward and make new things and do new stuff.”
Brats, a Hulu documentary from Andrew McCarthy released in June, explored the 1980s group of young actors who often appeared in coming-of-age films. Hall, a member of the group, appeared in 1985’s The Breakfast Club and 1984’s Sixteen Candles when he was just 15 and 16.
The documentary included appearances from actors Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Timothy Hutton, Demi Moore, Rob Lowe and Lea Thompson, along with writer-director Howard Deutch, producer Lauren Shuler and David Blum, the journalist who coined the term “Brat Pack.

Closely following the release of Andrew McCarthy’s documentary / filmed therapy session Brats, which reveals the impact the publication of the article that dubbed some of the young actors of the ’80s “the Brat Pack” had on McCarthy’s life and career (despite the article specifying that McCarthy was not a member of the Brat Pack), comes the news that McCarthy has a role in the sci-fi thriller Orion, which has just wrapped production in New York. Also in the Orion cast are Debby Ryan (Shortcomings), Drew Van Acker (Last Survivors), Karin Ann (The Tattooist of Auschwitz), Natalia Lesz (Krime Story), Daniel Bisla (Ghost Adventures), and Theodora Miranne (The Blacklist: Redemption).

With 1 billion minutes watched, “Bridgerton” Season 3 was the most-watched streaming original of the week of June 21-27, which marked the final four episodes’ second full week of availability. The achievement was unsurprising, as the Shonda Rhimes-produced Netflix drama has been dominating Luminate’s charts (as well as Nielsen’s and Netflix’s own) since the first four episodes of Season 3 were released in May. Once again, both previous seasons continued to chart, with Season 2 in eighth place and Season 1 at the bottom.
Making a strong debut on the chart was “America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders,” a Netflix docuseries that was watched for 687 million minutes in its first full week of availability. It was followed by another docuseries, “Perfect Wife: The Mysterious Disappearance of Sherri Papini,” which his 509 million minutes watched in the same amount of time.

Brats, the recent hit documentary on Hulu by Andrew McCarthy, has shone a spotlight back onto the Brat Pack era, making waves among both new and long-time fans. Directed and narrated by McCarthy, who was among the core members of this youthful ensemble, Brats explores what it meant to be part of this famed collective. Plot: In the mid-eighties, a group of young actors known for starring in movies like St Elmo’s Fire and The Breakfast Club became popularly known as The Brat Pack, but many members of that group felt the term torpedoed their careers.

For those who took a look at Andrew McCarthy’s revisit with his Brat Pack brethren with the new Hulu documentary Brats, some may have noticed that a few key names did not make an appearance. Judd Nelson and Molly Ringwald were revealed to have declined involvement with the film. However, one name that was even neglected to get mentioned was Sixteen Candle‘s Anthony Michael Hall. Hall (who has recently given his endorsements to remakes of his 80s classics Weird Science and The Breakfast Club) spoke with The Wrap, where he shed some light on his absence from the doc.
When asked if McCarthy had called him up for an appearance, Hall explained, “He did. And I can go on record saying, I politely declined because I’m always making new stuff and always moving forward and looking ahead. So that was my own impetus for why I chose...

Two 80s teen dramas, The Breakfast Club and St Elmo’s Fire, made overnight stars of a band of young actors including Molly Ringwald, Demi Moore and Rob Lowe – and Andrew McCarthy, whose new documentary looks back on those years
Depending on your age, Andrew McCarthy’s Brats will either be a cosy nostalgia trip or a window into another era of celebrity. As someone who was two years old at their zenith, I’ve only ever known the Brat Pack as a past buzzword: a gaggle of then-young American actors who became a collective cultural phenomenon before just as quickly dispersing into a very different array of career fortunes. To look back on that now, as McCarthy’s documentary does, is to learn more about 80s-era media and publicity machinery than anything particularly crucial about American cinema.

Written by first-timer Anne Vithayathil, the film centers around a heated interrogation between a U.S. Intelligence expert tasked to help an amnesiac astronaut recover his memory in order to determine “who” or “what” killed the rest of the crew before they crash landed back on Earth.
Producing the film alongside Van Acker, Elle Army (Life Like) and Scott Army, Sunil Perkash, describes the project as “a very unique world building sci fi thriller that relies on incredibly strong performances from all of the cast and the meticulously curated world building by our director, Jaco Bouwer. We could not be more excited to bring our clever twisting and turning film to audiences worldwide soon.”

My guest on 20 Questions this week is Anthony Michael Hall.
In his latest film, Trigger Warning, which is streaming on Netflix, Hall stars as a gang-boss villain opposite Jessica Alba’s Special Forces commander character as she sets out to investigate her father’s untimely death.
Hall shot to fame in the 1980s as a part of the fabled “Brat Pack,” starring in such films as National Lampoon’s Vacation, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and Weird Science when he was only a teenager. When the term “Brat Pack” appeared in a 1985 New York magazine story by journalist David Blum, with Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe and Judd Nelson on the issue’s cover, Hall fell under that label’s umbrella with a group that included Andrew McCarthy, Molly Ringwald, Demi Moore and Ally Sheedy.

ABC News Studios is teaming up with Imagine Documentaries to tell the story of Barbara Walters, the legendary broadcast journalist, anchor and host who died in 2022. Emmy winner Jackie Jesko is set to direct the film, which will debut on Hulu in 2025.
The untitled doc will chronicle Walters’ entire groundbreaking career, which started at NBC’s Wnbt in the 1950s and led to “Today,” where she was the show’s first female co-host. Walters then made history by joining the “ABC Evening News” as the first female network news anchor, and at the time the highest-paid of anyone in history. “Bridgerton” had a predictably massive week on Luminate’s weekly viewership rankings, landing as the No. 1 streaming original for June 14-20. In the first full week of availability of Season 3’s last four episodes, the season was watched for 3.1 billion minutes. The earlier seasons of “Bridgerton” continued to see solid viewership, with Season 1 landing at No. 4 with 297.8 million minutes watched and Season 2 taking No. 9 with 255.6 million minutes watched.
“The Boys” was the second-most-watched title of the week following its Season 4 debut. The June 14-20 window marked the first full week of availability of the season’s first three episodes plus the first day of availability for Episode 4; during that time, the season was watched for a strong 744.4 million minutes. Episodes will continue to release weekly on Thursdays, so it’s likely that the Amazon superhero series will remain on the chart for weeks to come.
Season 2 of Netflix’s “Perfect Match” rose from No.

Andrew McCarthy Andrew McCarthy has famously had a love/hate relationship with The Brat Pack, the label foist upon him and a group of other ’80s actors who appeared in several films together. And he’s not the only one — several others have talked about feeling pigeonholed by their association with the Brat Pack over the years. But now, McCarthy seems to have come to peace with it. After making the new documentary Brats, McCarthy said he’s finally able to look at the label and recognize all of the positive things that have come from it. Andrew McCarthy’s new Hulu documentary Brats has drawn enough interest for Sony to revisit one of the defining Brat Pack movies. According to Deadline, the studio is “exploring the possibility” of a St. Elmo’s Fire sequel.
Making the film would reportedly “hinge” on reuniting the original cast, featuring McCarthy, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, and Mare Winningham.
Deadline emphasizes the potential sequel is in the “very early going” and doesn’t even have a script yet.
Co-written and directed by the late Joel Schumacher, St. Elmo’s Fire was released in 1985 and centered around a group of recent Georgetown University graduates as they struggle with the responsibilities of adulthood. It was a surprise hit, grossing $37.8 million on a $10 million budget.
This isn’t the first attempt at revisiting St. Elmo’s Fire in recent years. NBC began developing a TV series in 2019, but the network...

Is the Brat Pack coming back? According to Deadline, Sony wants to rekindle the flame for a St Elmo’s Fire sequel if primary cast members are willing to return. While Sony is ready with wallet in hand to strike a deal, the proposed project depends on the participation of Andrew McCarthy, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, and Mare Winningham.
The coming-of-age romance drama focuses on a group of friends fresh out of college and looking to start their lives as adults. Xennials connected with St. Elmo’s Fire significantly, especially in the face of an ever-changing world and the pressure to carry the generational torch for Generation X. In addition to being one of Joel Schumacher’s cinematic gems, St. Elmo’s Fire boasts a legendary soundtrack with artists like John Parr, Billy Squire, David Foster, Fee Waybill, Jon Anderson, Vikki Moss, and Airplay contributing one banger after another.

Exclusive: Andrew McCarthy’s Hulu documentary Brats has brought back memories of the coming-of-age film where the term “Brat Pack” was coined. Deadline can reveal that Sony is exploring the possibility of making a new version of St. Elmo’s Fire. This version would hinge on reuniting original cast members McCarthy, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy and Mare Winningham.
The 1985 film that the late Joel Schumacher directed and co-wrote with Carl Kurlander, focused on that transitional period between college and the pressures of finding jobs and starting lives. It was a surprise summer hit with a hugely successful soundtrack. The follow-up would capture the characters as they’ve come out the other end of all that.
Movies get remade all the time, with concepts resuscitated and roles populated by younger actors, but to me this sounds a far more interesting way to reconnect with the original movie.

The release of Andrew McCarthy’s Hulu documentary ‘Brats’ has sparked renewed interest in the Brat Pack—that group of young actors who starred in several iconic teen movies of the 1980s, like 'Pretty in Pink,' 'Sixteen Candles,' and 'The Breakfast Club.'
Those films often featured different configurations of Brat Pack members on screen—like Ally Sheedy, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, and Molly Ringwald—creating a web of connections between the actors. To visualize these relationships, one passionate fan has used IMDb data to create a diagram of the Brat Pack’s movie connections. Taking it a step further, the interactive visualization also connects the Brat Pack with two other groups of actors: the Rat Pack of the 1960s (Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, and others), and the Frat Pack of the 1990s (Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller, and more comedic actors).
As part of its partnership with analytics platform Tableau, IMDb is sharing a huge movie dataset, allowing Tableau users to explore, create, and share data visualizations and infographics. In his visualization “Packs,” Zach Bowders has displayed the films of all three groups of actors to show their connections within their respective Packs, and how they connect to the other cohorts. According to Bowders, “Molly Ringwald is the key to everything.” Did you know she starred in films with members of both the Rat Pack (Joey Bishop in ‘Betsy’s Wedding’) and the Frat Pack (Ben Stiller in ‘Fresh Horses’)?

Back in 1985, Emilio Estevez and Andrew McCarthy shared the screen in the Joel Schumacher-directed coming-of-age film St. Elmo’s Fire, which was a box office hit that’s still remembered fondly to this day, even though the critical response wasn’t very positive. In the build-up to the release of that film, Estevez and McCarthy were set to co-star in another project, called Young Men with Unlimited Capital… but unfortunately, eighteen days before the release of St. Elmo’s Fire, New York Magazine published an article by David Blum in which Blum dubbed several of the hottest young actors of the day the Brat Pack. The actors mentioned in that article were shocked and offended by the Brat Pack label – so much that Estevez refused to do Young Men with Unlimited Capital with McCarthy, killing the project. Thirty-nine years later, the story of Young Men with Unlimited Capital has still never made it to the screen.

Last weekend had something for everyone with a stacked roster of streaming shows and a blockbuster family film in theaters. According to IMDb data, Prime Video’s “The Boys” and Disney/Pixar’s ‘Inside Out 2’ saw the most traffic of any titles from Friday, June 14 through Sunday, June 16. “The Boys” returned for their highly anticipated fourth season with three new episodes that dropped on Thursday, June 13. Meanwhile at the box office, ‘Inside Out 2’ became the first film since last year’s ‘Barbie’ to score a weekend debut over $100 million. The most popular names on the site told a slightly different story, but looking at the top 10 titles and names during that time period provided a glimpse of what to expect in the coming weeks.
Top 10 Titles
1. The Boys
2. Inside Out 2
3. Bridgerton
4. House of the Dragon
5. The Acolyte
6. Hit Man
7. Presumed Innocent
8. Space Cadet
9. Bad Boys: Ride or Die
10. Inside Out
Top 10 Names
1. Nicola Coughlan
2. Glen Powell
3. Adria Arjona
4. Claudia Jessie
5. Laz Alonso
6. Andrew McCarthy
7. Valorie Curry
8. Erin Moriarty
9. Antony Starr
10. Luke Newton
The top titles list was split evenly between shows and movies, with returning series “The Boys” and “Bridgerton” leading the way. But “House of the Dragon” was right there with them, a notable achievement considering the list only captured traffic from a single day (the Season 2 premiere date on Sunday). Interesting outliers included the upcoming Prime Video movie ‘Space Cadet,’ which dropped its first trailer last week, and the first ‘Inside Out’ movie made it onto the list, riding the wave of interest in the sequel.
The top names on IMDb were mostly consistent with the top titles, but with some interesting twists. “Bridgerton” and “The Boys” cast members represented 7 of the top 10 names, as expected. But interest in ‘Hit Man’ stars Glen Powell and Adria Arjona was still high, and only Nicola Coughlan of “Bridgerton” was more popular on the site than the ‘Hit Man’ leads. Finally, the appearance of Andrew McCarthy may seem like a glitch if you haven’t heard of his new documentary ‘Brats,’ which premiered on Hulu on June 13. In it, the actor reconnects with members of the Brat Pack, the cohort of young actors who starred in many iconic teen movies of the 1980s.
Looking ahead to the coming weeks, without the release of any tentpole titles in theaters, popular shows will likely dominate the list. “Game Of Thrones” spin-off “House of the Dragon” will certainly send some of its cast members into the top 10. Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke are shoo-ins, but it’s possible we’ll see Eve Best (Princess Rhaenys), Ewan Mitchell (Prince Aemond), or Matt Smith (Daemon) make the list. In the first week of the new season, “The Boys” stars Laz Alonso and Valorie Curry were the top names from the show, ranking above the more established stars. It’s likely there will be some movement in the top names list as the season plays out.

Editor’s Note: Journalist David Blum might have forever coined The Brat Pack era, but it was Carl Kurlander who provided the reason the infamous New York magazine article got written. St. Elmo’s Fire was a script Kurlander wrote with director Joel Schumacher, inspired by events in his life. Now an academic, Kurlander has written several guest columns for Deadline including a 35th anniversary remembrance of St. Elmo’s Fire. Why is he tapping again into those memories? He just watched Brats, the Hulu documentary that premiered at Tribeca Festival, directed by and starring Andrew McCarthy. He was part of the St. Elmo’s Fire ensemble that felt maligned by Blum’s article published the week before the film was released and became a surprise hit.
Here, Kurlander supplies some great dish — did you know Demi Moore’s drug demons almost forced Joel Schumacher to replace her with the young singer Madonna?...

For viewers of a certain age — or, perhaps more likely at this point, most ages — the term “Brat Pack” evokes nostalgia at its fondest. Movies like “The Breakfast Club” and “Pretty in Pink” remain rites of passage for teenagers coming of age nearly 40 years later, and few would argue that the 1980s didn’t represent a high-water mark for teen movies. For actual members of that coterie of actors, it’s a little more complicated.
That’s especially true of Andrew McCarthy, who remains so conflicted about the term coined by David Blum in his June 10, 1985 cover story for New York that he made a documentary about it (after earlier publishing a memoir entitled “Brat”). A core Brat Packer whose filmography is headlined by the likes of “Pretty in Pink” and “St. Elmo’s Fire,” McCarthy has more recently stepped behind the camera and directed episodes of “Orange Is the New Black” and “13 Reasons Why,...

The 1980s yielded a cache of iconic young actors who took Hollywood by storm, prominently featuring in films that shaped a generation. This group, later known as the Brat Pack, encompassed talents like Andrew McCarthy, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, and Ally Sheedy. The Era Defining Films Andrew McCarthy’s documentary Brats, released on June 13, aims to navigate through his experiences and the legacy of this group. It’s a reflective work on how films like The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink defined the era. These movies repeatedly portrayed high school struggles, mirroring global youth experiences. As...

What to make of Brats? On one hand, the documentary appears to be the result of one individual’s own unresolved issues. To describe it poorly, back in the eighties, one Andrew McCarthy got really miffed by an article written by David Bloom. After all these years, Andrew still seems to have it out for David, and he’s now out there to get the journalist. That said, Brats is extremely watchable from the opening minutes. It’s fantastically made, and it almost works in a more cinematic manner than a documentary. Of course, it is particularly appealing if you really have a thing for American pop culture of the eighties, more specifically the teen movies of that era. We’re going to do some introspection here before discussing the ending of Brats, where Andrew McCarthy and David Bloom finally come face-to-face.

Andrew McCarthy said he credits his Pretty in Pink co-star Molly Ringwald for getting his role in the 1986 iconic film.
The actor, whose new Hulu documentary Brats dropped on Thursday, recently looked back at John Hughes’ teen rom-com and how he got cast as heartthrob Blane McDonnagh.
“That part was written for a square-jawed, big, hunky, you know, quarterback and Molly got me that part,” McCarthy recalled to Entertainment Tonight. “I auditioned and Molly said, ‘Oh, that’s who I would fall for. He’s dreamy. He’s poetic.’ And so John Hughes went, ‘Really? That wimp?'”
The Resident actor continued, “He listened to Molly, which is what John did. John honored, not just on screen but in real life, John listened and respected young people. So, I was miscast in a way. I made what could [have] been a jerk have some sensitivity, so there was some empathy towards him.

The Brat Pack reconvened for Hulu’s high-profile documentary, Brats.

Thanks to a journalist that coined the moniker the Brat Pack, a specific group of superstar actors dominated popular culture in the 1980s with the films they made. While there isn’t an official list of who is considered a member of the famous group, actors and actresses associated with the name include Ally Sheedye, Emilio Estevez, Molly Ringwald, Rob Lowe, Judd Nelson, Demi Moore, Anthony Michael Hall and Andrew McCarthy. Several other actors that appeared in films with that circle like Robert Downey Jr., John Cusack, Ben Stiller and more.
Andrew McCarthy’s Hulu documentary Brats reunited many of the famous faces who became part of the crew when a New York Magazine writer called them by the name in 1985. In honor of this documentary, which is now available to stream on Hulu, we’ve gathered nine Brat Pack films that are available to stream. Unfortunately, Oxford Blues (1984) and Wisdom (1986) are not currently streaming.

Our top pick for a movie awards contender to stream this weekend is “I Saw the TV Glow,” writer-director Jane Schoenbrun’s and producer Emma Stone’s buzzy A24 horror drama.
The film stars Justice Smith and Brigette Lundy-Paine as Owen and Maddy, suburban teenagers who bond over their love of a TV show called “The Pink Opaque,” which follows psychic teenagers Isabel and Tara as they battle monsters. Eventually, it becomes clear that they are Isabel and Tara, which freaks Owen out. The film is a surrealistic trans allegory with unique visuals and an excellent contemporary indie rock soundtrack that cements Schoenbrun as a filmmaker to watch. The cast also includes Danielle Deadwyler, Conner O’Malley, and Fred Durst. “I Saw the TV Glow” will be a darkhorse Oscar contender and a likely Independent Spirit Award nominee. It’s available on VOD now.

The term Brat Pack might bring back cherished memories of the ’80s for many. However, it’s a label that Andrew McCarthy and his colleagues didn’t embrace warmly. In his new documentary, Brats, McCarthy explores this contentious nickname and its cultural impact. A Journey Through the Brat Pack Era The film offers a personal perspective, following McCarthy as he reflects on his roles in iconic films like Pretty in Pink and St. Elmo’s Fire. It’s a nostalgic ride where McCarthy reunites with fellow members such as Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Ally Sheedy, and Demi Moore. These interactions delve into how their...

As Claire said during her weekend detention, “I hate having to go along with everything my friends say.” Apparently taking a cue, Molly Ringwald – along with Judd Nelson – was one of the key members of the Brat Pack who sat out of being interviewed for Andrew McCarthy’s documentary Brats. So, where were they?
As McCarthy told Entertainment Tonight, both Molly Ringwald and Judd Nelson may not have been feeling particularly bratty, at least not in the way he would have wanted. “I mean, they both are in the film in a sense that there’s a lot of clips and interviews and things. The Brat Pack is an ongoing relationship, you know what I mean? And some people are at different places in their lives to want to or not want to talk about it. I think that just informs it even more. I mean, that’s my takeaway from it.

May 1985 was a good moment to be a hot, young actor. You had filmmakers like John Hughes presenting the teen experience in a way that resonated with teen audiences. You had studios who were suddenly happy to make films that catered to this lucrative, 14-to-24 demographic, so work was steady. You had ensemble films like The Breakfast Club, which had just come out the previous February, that provided the perfect showcases for this abundance of under-30 talent. It was not a coincidence that one of the most hotly anticipated movies of the season,...

If you’ve ever lovingly referred to Andrew McCarthy and his acting cohort as the Brat Pack, know that they detested that label. Coined from an infamous New York Magazine cover story, it’s this complex narrative that his new documentary, Brats, aims to unpack. More than just a nostalgic journey, Brats offers McCarthy an opportunity to explore how this term froze them in a pop-cultural moment.
