The View looks different this week because one of their own is missing from around the table.
Typically, Joy Behar is off on Mondays, giving her a long weekend while she sits in as moderator for Whoopi Goldberg on Fridays.
This time, someone else was missing around the table, and The View fans were commenting on social media.
Sunny Hostin, who is usually always at her seat despite many other commitments, was noticeably absent earlier in the week.
Besides being on The View, Sunny raises her children, author books, and has now branched into the wine business.
But this absence had nothing to do with extended travel or other work commitments and was noticeable enough that Whoopi started the show with an announcement about Sunny.

The ABC show “Abbott Elementary” is coming back for its fourth season on October 9th. This show about teachers trying to educate students in an underfunded school is really popular. The creator of the show, Quinta Brunson, got fans excited at a big comic convention by hinting at something big happening this season.
Brunson teased that the new season will have an “interesting crossover.” A crossover is when characters from one TV show meet characters from another show. She said this could “change TV forever” but then joked we should “lower our expectations.” Naturally, people on the internet started freaking out with their theories about what show it could crossover with!
Most people think the teachers may meet up with the gang from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” This show is also set in Philadelphia and airs on a Disney channel, just like “Abbott Elementary.” Earlier this year, the creator...

The galactic explorers of the Star Trek franchise have a lot to worry about, from failing weapon shields to unfriendly alien races to the possibility of going on an away mission and getting stranded in a hostile environment. One thing they don’t need to worry about is money: By the time we meet the characters of the original ‘60s TV series, visitors from the planet Vulcan have shared replicator technology with the people of Earth, such that Starfleet exists in the post-scarcity era. To call Star Trek’s vision of the world socialist might be too simplistic, but aspects of its setting align with early 20th century revolutionaries’ futurist theories.
By contrast, Futurama’s vision of the 31st century could never be mistaken for utopian: New New York has suicide booths on every corner; mutants are forced to live in the sewer; and while robots have taken on some...

Ever since its premiere on July 10, 2024, Sunny, an Apple TV+ mystery/thriller/dark comedy series starring Rashida Jones, has captured the attention of both audiences and critics. Despite stiff competition from well-established shows like Presumed Innocent, another Apple TV+ hit, Sunny has carved out a significant place in viewers’ weekly watchlists. The Catchy Premise Sunny stands out with its unique blend of genres, echoing dark film noir detective shows while incorporating modern sci-fi and comedic elements. The show follows Suzie Sakamoto (portrayed by Rashida Jones), an American living in Kyoto, Japan, whose life is disrupted when her husband and son...

The timing of Apple TV+’s recently launched sci-fi drama series Sunny was doubly fortuitous.
The show stars Rashida Jones as Suzie, an American woman living in Kyoto, Japan, whose life is upended when her husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash. As a “consolation” she’s given Sunny, one of a new class of seemingly sentient domestic robots made by her late husband’s electronics company.
Produced by A24 and shot on location, the show had the good luck of going into production in 2022 when Japan’s borders were still mostly closed to tourists due to the pandemic, allowing for unprecedented shooting access to Kyoto’s evocative but usually thronged historic streets. And just as production was winding down, the world’s imagination became transfixed by a powerful new tool — Chat GPT4 — lending the show’s themes of AI’s promise and peril an all-new urgency.

Bill Lawrence also executive produces and serves as showrunner, adding to his Apple TV+ portfolio.
The official synopsis reads: “Andrew Yancy (Vaughn) has been bounced from the Miami Police Department and is now a health inspector in the Keys. While each episode of Sunny is short and sweet, it’s certainly not simple. There’s a lot that goes into the 30-minute episodes, and sometimes they go straight over our heads. The show follows an American woman living in Kyoto, Japan, named Suzie. Suzie suddenly learns that her husband Masa and her son Zen have been in a plane crash and may not return home, but as soon as she learns of this terrible news, deep, dark familial secrets about Masa’s family start to unravel. From episodes 1-3, we learn that Masa was even hiding the fact that he worked in robotics from Suzie, and she despised them. Suzie also learns that Masa might be the owner of a robot sex ring. Episode 4 begins with a flashback of Masa driving Zen to school, and when they get there, he sends Zen off with a smile on his face.

It’s been over a year since Glenn Howerton, Rob McElhenney and Charlie Day dropped the last episode of The Always Sunny Podcast, but Dolph Lundgren will have a giant nose for a head before we get another one.
When the stars and creators of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia first launched a sitcom rewatch podcast for their cult-beloved show back in late 2021, the side project originally looked to be yet another low-budget appeal to 2000s nostalgia along with the rest of the concerningly popular sitcom rewatch podcast genre. However, as The Always Sunny Podcast progressed and Howerton, McElhenney and Day’s incredible chemistry drew in more and more of the main show’s fanbase, the trio built the podcast into a professional production complete with a producer in Megan Ganz, an impressive guest list that saw Broadway superstar Lin-Manuel Miranda break down “The Nightman Cometh” and a cozy, sleek studio that,...

Apple TV+ is telling a unique story with its new series Sunny. Actress Rashida Jones leads the show as it mixes elements of drama, mystery and even comedy set in the future.
Jones plays Susie, a widow coping with her husband’s sudden passing. But she discovers he had secrets that make her question who he really was. Sunny is a robot he created that’s supposed to help Susie find answers.
The interesting part is Sunny, played by a real human. And the near-future setting in Japan. Jones says Sunny is like a “dark, humorous fairy tale” where Susie forms an unexpected bond with the robot. Together they try to solve the mystery of Susie’s late husband.
It’s not your average detective story since it blends genres. Jones is known for comedic roles but gets to show her dramatic chops too. And the futuristic elements add an extra layer of intrigue.

Episode 3 of Sunny is quite an odd episode. It’s got some new revelations about Masa, but it’s also got some stuff about this futuristic Japan that goes right over your head. I’m still trying to wrap my head around a prosthetic finger. I suppose it’s like a luxury accessory, or maybe just a trendy item for those who’ve had a finger chopped off. Gangsters are all the rage, no? Jokes aside, this episode is about a certain memory that Suzie has of her husband and child, but it’s also about a new discovery that Suzie and Mixxy end up making together. Episode 3 begins with a grieving Suzie, who’s a changed person, but not for the reasons you’d think. It seems Sunny has basically taken over chores within days of entering Suzie’s life, completely changing her perception of homebots. Suzie’s grieving...

‘Sunny’ Star Rashida Jones Isn’t Afraid to Be Replaced by Artificial Intelligence — ‘but I Could Be’
![Image](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/MV5BNTZmNGMxZmYtOTU4MS00ZTQ5LWEyNDktOWFmMTFhMjMzZGI0XkEyXkFqcGc@._V1_QL75_UX500_CR0,6,500,281_.jpg)
Even as the multi-tasking talent at the center of a dizzying genre blend, Rashida Jones has perspective.
In Apple TV+’s “Sunny,” the beloved “Parks & Rec” actor executive produces and stars as Suzie, a spit-fire American ex-pat suddenly living and grieving alone in a futuristic version of Japan. The series’ first two episodes, which started streaming Wednesday July 10 (new installments release weekly through September 4), introduce an investigation into a mysterious plane crash that forces Suzie to grapple with the shocking disappearance of both her young song and husband, Masa.
Created by Katie Robbins, this darkly funny sci-fi thriller simultaneously explores the shadowy innerworkings of a tech company where Suzie’s late spouse used to work. That plot casts our smart-mouthed outsider — who for better or worse hates robots — opposite an adorable, artificially intelligent home companion designed specifically for her by Masa. Part grief counselor, part detective sidekick, and one big question mark for Suzie,...

Apple TV+ has been on a roll lately with its original sci-fi shows. Their newest series Sunny, starring Rashida Jones, is another hit that’s got people talking.
Sunny tells the story of a widow living in Japan who gets a robot companion. It mixes humor with heavy themes about loss and artificial intelligence. Critics love how Jones plays her character – understated but really captures her grief.
Audience reviews have been overwhelmingly positive too, with Sunny scoring 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. That makes it Apple TV+’s highest rated sci-fi show of the year. Their other 2024 sci-fi releases like Sugar and Dark Matter also did well.
Not everyone is fully sold on the robot sidekick though. Some feel it’s a bit too cartoony for the realistic world. But most agree the story and production quality are top-notch.

Sunny, the latest addition to Apple’s streaming service, delves deep into the blurred line between human emotions and artificial intelligence. In this genre-spanning series, we follow Suzie Sakamoto (Rashida Jones), an American expat living in Kyoto, Japan, whose life is turned upside down after the mysterious disappearance of her family. When faced with overwhelming grief, Suzie’s husband’s company delivers her a domestic helper robot named Sunny. This initially seems like a hollow condolence till we learn Sunny was programmed by her husband himself—a twist that adds a personal touch to an otherwise mechanical entity. In Apple TV+’s offbeat sci-fi dramedy Sunny, Rashida Jones plays a grieving woman who’s been drained of her will to live — but maybe a friendly robot can help her recharge.

Rashida Jones is back on TV in Apple TV+’s new sci-fi show, Sunny, where she plays a grumpy mourning mother Suzie, a widow who is left saddled with what she hates: a robot.
The series takes place in a world not all too dissimilar to the real one, but there are some big differences. Namely, in this world, at least in Japan, society has become dependent on HomeBots, personal companions, and helpers around the house.
Suzie is an American who just lost her husband and kid in a mysterious plane crash which she is having trouble accepting the outcome of. Things do not get any easier when she receives a HomeBot named Sunny programmed just for her, courtesy of her now-dead husband.

Suzie (Rashida Jones) has no friends in Kyoto. When we meet her in the first moments of Apple TV+’s “Sunny,” her husband and son are missing and presumed dead when their airplane crashes; she has a testy relationship with her mother-in-law, and because of her dyslexia, she still hasn’t learned Japanese. There’s barely a reason to exit her fugue state until the delivery of an at-home assistant: the aptly named Sunny.
Designed by her husband, Sunny is at first a burden, then a sympathetic ear, and then, miraculously, a friend. But none of “Sunny” would work if we don’t buy the very real relationship that springs up between a human woman and a robot.
“We knew from the jump that we didn’t want Rashida or our other actors to be acting opposite a tennis ball or some kind of CG thing,” showrunner Katie Robbins told IndieWire.

Rashida Jones revisited her mid ’90s beef with Tupac Shakur in a new interview with The New Yorker, explaining how her point of view has changed over time.
The actress and filmmaker reflected on her quarrel with the rapper, which happened when Jones was a teenager. It all began when Shakur made disparaging comments about her father, legendary producer Quincy Jones, in an interview with The Source in 1993 when Rashida Jones was 17. “All he does is stick his dick in white bitches and make fucked up kids,” Shakur notably said.
Jones then responded, writing a fiery open letter to Shakur: “Because I am the youngest of Quincy Jones’ six daughters, I cannot view this article or this man without bias,” the letter reads, “But I do think that anyone who reads this article would be shocked by his ignorance and lack of respect for his people.” She continued by alleging...

Grief is messy. While reeling from the loss of a loved one, life rudely refuses to press pause — there’s only so long the stricken can take a break before getting back to work or keeping up with our demanding yet mundane routines. But recovery doesn’t care about convenience. It doesn’t fit nicely in our predetermined schedules. It simmers, stews, and sours. During that arduous overlap where our unavoidable internal anguish clashes with the requisite external composure, chaos can erupt. People might quit their jobs, leave their partners, and/or move across the country. And their motivation, whether productive or pointless, isn’t always easy to track.
But unlike real life, stories about grief cannot be messy. The characters within can be sloppy, sure, but their narrative needs to be focused — picking up the pieces of a psyche shattered by sorrow and cobbling them into something meaningful, something affecting,...

Suzie Sakamoto is struggling with loss. The American expatriate has called Kyoto home for over a decade, but after the mysterious deaths of her husband Masa and young son Zen in an apparent plane crash, she finds herself adrift.
Looking for answers, and with little left to ground her, Suzie turns to an unexpected source: Sunny, an advanced home robot gifted to her by Masa’s colleague from his work in robotics. As Suzie grows closer to Sunny, she discovers her late husband kept far more secrets than she ever realized.
This is the premise of the Apple TV+ series Sunny, created by Katie Robbins. The 10-episode, one-hour drama explores mystery and grief through the lens of robotics and modern Japan. Varun Dhawan is set to collaborate with his father, David Dhawan, on a new romantic comedy film, marking their fourth project together. The duo has previously worked on successful films like “Judwaa 2”, “Main Tera Hero”, and “Coolie No 1”.
The film’s shooting is scheduled to begin on July 12 at Mehboob Studios in Bandra, with indoor scenes being shot first. The team will then move to outdoor locations as per the script’s requirements.
Varun Dhawan is currently also working on “Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari” alongside Janhvi Kapoor, directed by Shashank Khaitan and produced by Dharma Productions.
This upcoming romantic comedy with his father is highly anticipated, given the success of their previous collaborations. The father-son duo is known for their excellent chemistry and comedic timing, which has entertained audiences in the past. Are we on the verge of Hot TV Robot Summer?
This week on HBO, Julio Torres’ delightfully, defiantly weird comedy Fantasmas is finishing up its first season, and one of the main characters is Bibo, a helpful yet pushy household robot whose secret desire is to become an actor. Now comes Apple TV’s Sunny, where the chipper but potentially troublesome robot is the title character, and core focus of the plot. One more, and it’s officially a trend!

Companionship comes in many forms. What soothes one person could feel foreign to another, with people, pets, and inanimate objects bringing joy and solace to those affected by various traumas. When Suzie (Rashida Jones), a woman living in Japan, inherits Sunny (Joanna Sotomura), a domestic robot made by her husband’s company, they uncover dark truths about what happened to Suzie’s husband and son, trapping them in a spiral of violence, secrecy, and a war for power. I mean this sincerely: Sunny is my favorite TV series of 2024 so far. So, you can imagine my excitement when I was allowed to speak with members of the cast and creative team: Rashida Jones, Hidetoshi Nishijima, Joanna Sotomura, Annie the Clumsy, Judy Ongg, Jun Kunimura, Sunny creator Katie Robbins, and director Lucy Tcherniak.

On shows like “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation,” the great strength of Rashida Jones has been her plainspoken relatability. Despite her glamorous lineage as the daughter of Quincy Jones and Peggy Lipton, Jones blends in with ensembles built for everyday quirks rather than large-scale gestures; on those NBC sitcoms, for example, her unfussy delivery style enhanced both the reality and the comedy of her scenes.
Jones tested herself a bit more as a leading lady in the Sofia Coppola movie “On the Rocks,” but her lower-key take on gilded-cage ennui wound up a comfortable fit for what was itself a lower-key Coppola picture of more modest moods and less spiritual distress. In the new Apple TV+ series “Sunny,” however, Jones must access a greater range of emotions — even when they’re supposed to be partially concealed. When the auditorium full of eager theater-goers filed in to watch Charlie Kelly’s magnum opus musical The Nightman Cometh, not one of them had any context for what they were watching or any way of knowing what insane twist would come next — least of all The Waitress.
By now, the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season Four episode “The Nightman Cometh” is such a massive cultural phenomenon that the titular musical itself has all but outgrown its humble beginnings. When the series stars and co-creators Rob McElhenney, Glenn Howerton and Charlie Day realized that the throwaway song performed by Dennis and Charlie in the Season Three episode “Sweet Dee’s Dating a Retarded Person” had become a bop in its own right and that fans were serenading each other with “Dayman / Aaa-aaahhhh / Fighter of the Nightman,” the idea arose to turn the gang’s failed single into a full-length...

If Brendan Schaub could write a joke as funny as any of those on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, maybe he’d finally headline at Joe Rogan’s club.
Rogan, the undisputed king of all podcasting and the self-professed defender of comedy integrity, has made many controversial moves in his position as the nucleus of the Manosphere, but for all the divisive figures ever booked on The Joe Rogan Experience, only one perennial guest has ever equally upset both sides of the culture wars — Brendan Schaub.
The former Mma fighter and current comedy attempter was able to carve a corner for himself in the dudebro podcasting racket in the early 2010s due to his close relationship with Rogan, and though the relationship between the two has been rumored to be rocky in recent years, Rogan gifting Schaub the opportunity to cut to the front of the line in the stand-up...

This week's Pilot TV Podcast starts on a sombre note as Kay and Boyd help James come to terms with the cancellation of another one of his favourite shows, Prime Video's timey-wimey sci-fi Outer Range. And so, in honour of the show's passing — and completely unrelated to the time-sensitive recording of an upcoming spoiler special that may or may not involve Rapman and his brilliant Netflix show Supacell — the team took a step into their own time-traveling hole and recorded this week's episode all out of sequence. As you can imagine, chaos ensues!
Still, amidst the anarchy and all-out-of-orderness of things, James, Kay, and Boyd manage to discuss both the British and American elections, the third episode of House Of The Dragon, and this week's all-important listener question: which classic shows would've benefitted from more series/episodes, and which could've done with fewer? Statistically, you aren’t watching AppleTV+ — earlier this year, Matthew Belloni’s newsletter Puck reported that viewership on the platform is just 0.29 percent, according to Nielsen — so when I tell you its sitcoms are endemically friction-free, I realize you kind of have to take my word for it.
Having honed this opinion via immersion in, among others, The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin, Palm Royale, Loot and The Big Door Prize (linked above), enduring 10 episodes of Apple’s new “dark comedy” Sunny wasn’t exactly how I wanted to kick off my summer. I guess I can’t say it pleasantly surprised me, but I definitely was not expecting that (a) one of the world’s biggest computer companies has brought us such a prickly, unsettling vision of our possible future living with A.I., and (b) that Apple has made a new comedy that isn’t allergic to conflict.

Sirens is quickly shaping up to be one of the most highly anticipated series of 2025.
As we reported yesterday, the Netflix dark comedy from Maid showrunner Molly Smith Metzler has cast Julianne Moore, Meghann Fahy, and Milly Alcock in its lead roles.
Now, Deadline is reporting that the cast has been further fleshed out with two more beloved stars.
Kevin Bacon and Glenn Howerton have both signed on to co-star with the trio of talented ladies.
Bacon will play Peter Kell the billionaire husband of Moore's Michaela Kell.

Plot: Set in Japan, the series follows Suzie who recently lost her husband and son in a mysterious plane crash. As consolation, her husband’s company gives Suzie a robotic home assistant with a sunny disposition–aptly named Sunny. A begrudging relationship forms between the two as they set out to figure out what really happened to Suzie’s family.
Review: Love or fear them; robots have been a part of popular culture for over a century. As technology develops, so do the various interpretations of sentient machines. From Metropolis and Star Wars to M3GAN and Optimus Prime, robots are interpreted as everything from comic relief to villainous killers bent on the destruction of mankind. The new AppleTV+ series Sunny takes a darkly funny look at the potential balance between love and hate for robots in a great example of mature storytelling combined with an original take on a timeless genre.

It’s time for the Summer Olympics, and you know what that means: it’s also time to become an armchair expert in every sport.
The Olympic Games bring people together from around the nation and the globe, united by the common interest of screaming from the couch for world-class athletes to swim faster or slowing down a tumbling routine to count the twists and turns. The Olympic trials are already streaming on Peacock, which will host the Games coverage in the U.S., but other streamers are ready to harness Olympics fever. Netflix’s docuseries about Simone Biles will premiere in July, as will “Sprint,” which takes a closer look at runners. Peacock’s “Those About to Die” takes viewers back to the days of Roman gladiators and a very different kind of athletic competition, as does a docuseries about Alaskan bears fighting the elements and each other to make it to winter.

Adapted from Colin O’Sullivan’s novel The Dark Manual, Sunny is the quintessential Apple TV+ series. Not just because it depicts the sort of future—filled with user-friendly devices housed in white cases with soft, round edges—that could have been designed by Steve Jobs himself, but because like so much of the streamer’s content, Sunny is a handsomely made series featuring A-list talent that amounts to a little less than the sum of its parts.
Created by Katie Robbins, the 10-episode series takes viewers to a near-future version of Kyoto where a grief-stricken woman named Suzie (Rashida Jones) is trying to process the loss of her husband, Masa (Nishijima Hidetoshi), and their son in a mysterious plane crash. A glimmer of hope arrives in the glowing digital display of a three-foot android, Sunny (Joanna Sotomura), that’s gifted to Suzie by the robotics company that her husband used to work for.

Delegations from 40 countries attended, including Australia, Spain, Brazil, Canada, Nigeria, and China.
“We’re very pleased,” Mathieu Béjot, Sunny Side’s head of strategy and development, said regarding this year’s gathering. “Everybody is telling me they had great meetings, concrete meetings. There’s a kind of atmosphere in La Rochelle, we’re graced with a beautiful sunshine for three days. And it does help. It makes Sunny Side sunny. A24 has received an influx of cash from Josh Kushner’s Thrive Capital that now values the indie studio at $3.5 billion (enterprise value), a source with knowledge of the investment told IndieWire. The studio’s new valuation is 40 percent higher than it was for the last round of funding: 2022’s $225 million investment at a $2.5 billion valuation.
That doesn’t mean Kushner threw $1 billion into the pot — far from it. Existing investors from the previous round have also upped their financial support for this new round, A24 said on Wednesday. Additionally, the A24 brand has just organically grown its valuation with its successes in recent years, including “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (2022), “Talk to Me” (2022), and this year’s “Civil War.”
But still, it must have been substantial. The Financial Times reported Kushner’s investment was $100 million, which we understand to be in the ballpark.

The good thing about Apple TV+’s seemingly endless budget is that it allows for projects that other networks and streaming services might put in a box to explore their potential in creative ways. It truly feels like Apple is the best place for creators, and not just because of the money. Despite a few recent missteps, it’s valuable to have a company this massive that’s willing to open the wallets for shows as fundamentally different as “Ted Lasso,” “Dark Matter,” and “Swagger.”

Film and TV studio A24 has secured a new round of funding led by Josh Kushner’s investment firm Thrive Capital.
In connection with the investment, Kushner will join the board of directors for A24, best known for such films as “Civil War,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Moonlight” and “Uncut Gems,” and TV series “Euphoria,” “Beef,” “Ramy” and “The Sympathizer.”
Financial details and exact figures were not disclosed by A24 and Thrive Capital, but sources confirm to Variety the investment from Thrive Capital gives it a valuation of about $3.5 billion — a 40% increase since A24’s most recent round of funding in 2022, which was $225 million at a $2.5 billion valuation.

What up? Are you ready for the best blooper reel ever?
For as talented as Rob McElhenney and the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia staff are behind the camera, there’s something special about those episodes when the characters themselves decide to don their directing caps. Whether Dennis, Mac, Charlie, Dee and Frank are shooting an insane political campaign promo, a terrorist threat video or a killer investment presentation, the number of lives that the one videotape in the group’s shared camera has lived is absurd, and it’s led to many of the best bits in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia history.
And, in a fresh outtake video from the classic It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season Eight episode “Frank’s Back in Business,” those chaotic Paddy’s Pub videotapes seem to be as much fun for the cast to film as they are for us to watch.

Apple Original Film, A24 and Jennifer Lawrence are reteaming for a new feature film.
Landing on top of a competitive situation, Apple has acquired murder mystery package The Wives, which has Lawrence attached to star and produce.
Joining Lawrence on the producing team is Justine Ciarrocchi, her partner at the duo’s Excellent Cadaver production banner, as well as Tony and Independent Spirit Award nominee Jeremy O. Harris (Zola, Slave Play) and Josh Godfrey. The latter two will produce under their bb2 banner.
Michael Breslin and Patrick Foley wrote the script for the project, which is described as being in development. No director is attached.
Plot details are being kept in the body bag, but it is being described as being partly inspired by the Real Housewives franchise, which focuses on the soap operatic and over-the-top theatrics of well-to-do women in areas ranging from Orange County to Miami to Atlanta.
