The return of Joseph Gordon-Levitt is just getting started.
After the actor took a hiatus from Hollywood, Gordon-Levitt has starred in musical “Flora and Son,” “Super Pumped,” and “Poker Face,” all in 2023. Now, the actor is bringing back his comedic timing for darkly funny crime thriller “Greedy People.”
Gordon-Levitt plays an outrageously corrupt cop who helps convince a rookie (Himesh Patel) to steal one million dollars. The official synopsis reads: “Will (Patel) and his rogue partner Terry (Gordon-Levitt) upend their small island town when they accidentally discover one million dollars at a crime scene (of their own making). After the duo unwisely decides to steal the money, the community’s quirky residents are lured into the mad dash for cash — ranging from an expectant mom (Lily James) to a masseur (Simon Rex) to a shrimp company owner (Tim Blake Nelson) — and everyone learns just how far they are willing to go for the almighty dollar.

"People are dead. There's too much loss for it to just be a coincidence." Lionsgate has unveiled an official trailer for a dark comedy thriller titled Greedy People, the latest from Old Henry director Potsy Ponciroli. It's set for a release in select theaters in August, though there's not much buzz about it yet. Perhaps with more time? The "darkly comedic crime thriller" film follows the residents of a small island town who must navigate a sensational murder and the discovery of a million dollars (at the crime scene), leading to a series of increasingly terrible decisions that upend the once peaceful community. "A million dollars. A million bad decisions." Starring Himesh Patel, Lily James, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, along with Simon Rex, Traci Lords, Tim Blake Nelson, Joey Lauren Adams, Uzo Aduba, Nina Arianda, & Jim Gaffigan. This seems a bit too erratic and messy, jumping all over place with these wacky townspeople.

Despite the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, sales agents and distributors are convening in Santa Monica this week in the hopes of reconnecting with buyers and kicking off deal discussions at the American Film Market.
After an underwhelming Toronto Film Festival, which saw little deal activity, there’s hope that a few of the starry packages being shopped at AFM will get picked up. But given the climate in Hollywood, many projects won’t officially hit the market until February at the European Film Market in Berlin. The marketplace is not only strained by the strike but the shifting appetites and belt-tightening at the major studios and streamers. At the same time, the return of buyers from China to AFM after several years away is seen as a positive sign.

When it comes to the post-summer box office blues, Taylor Swift: Eras Tour has helped shake it off. The film’s phenomenal success — it’s already the top-grossing concert film of all time in North America, not adjusted for inflation — as well as its unique rollout, in which Swift teamed up directly teaming directly with AMC Theaters, bypassing traditional studio distribution, is a bright light in an independent movie market sorely in need of some good news.
Sadly, there is only one Taylor Swift. The rest of the independent film world, representatives of which will be gathering in Santa Monica for the American Film Market Oct. 31-Nov. 5, sees few reasons to dance in the aisles.

Restarted negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers that could mean an end to the actors strike have raised hopes for this year’s American Film Market, which runs Oct. 31-Nov, 5 in Santa Monica. What everyone is hoping for is, in the words of one leading indie producer, that “we can all get back to business.”
Even without a new SAG-AFTRA deal, there is a healthy batch of new titles on offer — a mix of international features and U.S. indie films that have secured interim agreements from the union to begin production. “In the last few days we’ve seen a waterfall of lineups,” says Nadiia Zaionchkovska, Cco of newly-founded Ukraine distributor Green Light Films, which will be making its market debut at this year’s AFM. “Lots of theatrical films, lots either in post or in pre-production, ready to shoot in the first...
