Studios such as Disney and Hayao Miyazaki’s Ghibli have always been on top of their game with such media and continue to grow as well. In a time when live-action adaptations find themselves dominating industries, animation is finding its own unique ways to hold onto the foundations that captivate not only younger audiences but also older ones.

When musicologist Robert Komaniecki decided to score the cartoon tunes using complex objective criteria (and some ‘vibes’), he found some startling winners. He shows us his workings
When Robert Komaniecki started ranking Disney songs, he thought he knew how it would pan out. “I was born in 1990 and so in my mind, those are the best Disney musicals,” he says of the renaissance period that produced Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. “I think a lot of my fellow millennials reading this list reacted in a similar way. They were like, ‘You have songs from The Little Mermaid below a song from Frozen? That’s unthinkable!’”
But Komaniecki is a music theorist, and his list removed nostalgia from the equation, instead assigning songs rankings out of 500, scored on lyrics, music, vocals, plot integration and subjective enjoyment. By the time he posted his findings to X, counting down in daily batches...

Whenever Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli join hands, the planet is treated with extraordinary masterpieces. Since the 1980s, the duo has given multiple hits. All of his movies have been critically acclaimed. He won the Oscars with The Boy and the Heron. But there is another particular movie that could have won the Oscar.
Fans believe that The Wind Rises should have won the Oscar in 2014. Miyazaki’s work left everyone stunned. Unfortunately, Frozen won in the Best Animated Feature category, beating The Wind Rises. Frozen was also a great movie, but it was one scene from Miyazaki’s movie that won everyone’s hearts.

Legendary movie director Hayao Miyazaki won his third Oscar with The Boy and the Heron. But many fans believe it should have been his fourth. He won his first with Spirited Away.

Disney+, Hulu, and Max are joining forces and offering subscribers the opportunity to bundle all three streaming services and save a little money in the process. Disney took a look back at its work from decades past with a pair of throwback concerts at the Hollywood Bowl over the weekend.
Disney ’80s-’90s Celebration in Concert featured live performers, many of whom had worked on previous Disney projects, belting out live renditions of favorite tunes from those two titular decades. Jodi Benson (the voice of Ariel in the 1989 movie The Little Mermaid), Corbin Bleu (High School Musical), Bill Farmer (the official voice of Goofy and Pluto), Krysta Rodriguez (Smash), Aisha Jackson (Anna in Broadway’s Frozen) and Susan Egan (Meg in Hercules and the original Belle in Broadway’s Beauty and the Beast) were some of the performers to take the stage.
Among the era-appropriate songs performed in the shows were “A Whole New World” from Aladdin, “Colors of the Wind” from Pocahontas, “Circle of Life” from The Lion King and “What’s This?” from Tim Burton...

Inside Out 2 is quickly rising on box office record lists, leaving fans excited for an eventual digital and streaming release — one which Disney teased in a new sneak peek on Disney+.
In only a month in theaters so far, the sequel to Pixar's 2015 film Inside Out has become the studio's highest-grossing movie, and the fourth highest-grossing animated movie of all time, taking what once was Frozen's place on the list.
With Inside Out 2 claiming fourth, the only three movies to beat are (in order) The Lion King (2019), Frozen II, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Pixar’s streak of box office disappointments has ended, for now at least, as their latest film, Inside Out 2, has surpassed one of 2023’s biggest animated films, The Super Mario Bros. Movie from Illumination and Universal.
Inside Out 2, the sequel to the 2015 hit Inside Out, has set the record to not only become Pixar’s highest-grossing film of all time but now the third-highest-grossing animated film of all time, just behind Frozen II and the 2019 remake of The Lion King.
As of right now, Inside Out 2 has earned $1.389 Billion at the global box office, stomping on the Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s $1.362 Billion. However, it should be noted that Inside Out 2 had a budget of $200 Million while The Super Mario Bros. Movie had only a $100 Million budget.
Current Top Five Highest-Grossing Animated Movies:
- The Lion King (2019) $1.663 Billion
- Frozen II (2019) $1.454 Billion
- Inside Out 2 (2024) $1.389 Billion
– The Super Marion Bros.

People just love the Minions. With "Despicable Me 4" continuing to tear it up at the global box office, the franchise has crossed a major milestone, making a bit of history in the process. Illumination's signature series of films has now collectively crossed the $5 billion mark worldwide, making it the first animated franchise in history to do so. What's more, if things continue to go the way they're going, that number will be $6 billion and counting in just a few years.
"Despicable Me 4" once again topped the charts over the weekend, pulling in $44.6 million domestically in its second weekend. That represents just a 40% drop week-to-week following the sequel's record-setting opening weekend. Internationally, Gru and the Minions held strong as well, pulling in another $87.9 million from overseas markets. That puts the movie's running total at $437.8 million worldwide, with a lot of gas left in the tank. More importantly, it was...

The box office is getting a saving throw, primarily thanks to two animated films. “Despicable Me 4” and “Inside Out 2” are becoming massive juggernauts at the theater. This is giving Hollywood and the movie theater business a much-needed boost.
After this weekend, “Despicable Me 4” is heading towards $500 million globally. It made another $88 million and is now at $437.8 million worldwide.
This also makes the “Despicable Me” / “Minions” franchise the first animated franchise to hit $5 billion globally, so there are big wins there for Illumination.
Meanwhile, “Inside Out 2” is still climbing, hitting $1.35 billion globally and making it the fourth highest-grossing animated film of all time worldwide. It just beat “Frozen” for the spot and is quickly catching up to the “Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which holds the number three spot at $1.36 billion.
The first two spots belong to “The Lion King” (2019) at $1.66 billion and “Frozen 2” at $1.45 billion.

Updated: Animation domination continues at the global and international box office with Universal/Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 leading the pack this frame, and Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 still positively on fire after five sessions. At the same time, we’re seeing encouraging numbers for all major titles in release. And that’s a great thing; yes, there is reason to be positive.
Already this week, Inside Out 2 became Pixar’s highest grossing movie ever globally, and the Despicable Me/Minions franchise became the first animated franchise to reach $5B global. Neither of the current films in release are close to done. To wit: DM4 still has Japan, Korea and Italy on deck.
IO2, meanwhile, is going to Japan on August 1 — and that market may just help propel the Pixar sequel past Frozen 2 to become the biggest animated film of all time worldwide.

One of Walt Disney World’s oldest attractions is about to get a brand new facelift after five decades. The Country Bear Jamboree has been operating at the Main Kingdom since opening day on October 1st, 1971. The musical animatronic show was based on the Disneyland attraction of the same name (which closed in 2001). However, with the show becoming less popular over time, Disney is seeking to rejuvenate interest with a new theme.
The Country Bear Musical Jamboree will see the colorful cast of characters go from singing their own playlist to covers of various Disney film songs. Each song is sung by a specific set of characters, and each is given a country twist.
Full Song List:
– “Country Bear Musical Jamboree” (Five Bear Rugs)
– “Try Everything” from Zootopia
– “Kiss the Girl” from The Little Mermaid (Romeo McGrowl)
– “A Whole New World” from Aladdin (Wendell & Teddi Barra)

Mayim Bialik is most notably known for her role on The Big Bang Theory, in which she played Amy Farrah Fowler. Her time on the series, which spanned almost 12 years, has rightfully made her one of the most famous female comic actors of recent decades, becoming a household name of sorts.

Pixar’s Inside Out 2 has proved to be the box office smash of the year thus far, bringing in huge numbers from its theatrical run.
Pixar’s Inside Out 2 is now officially the studio’s most financially successful film of all time. Earlier this week the film passed the global total of Incredibles 2 at $1.243 billion to take the number one spot atop a list of beloved and successful movies. That’s not the only achievement that the film earned this week, either, as it also became the first film this year to go beyond the billion dollar mark on its theatrical run.
As noted by Forbes, Inside Out 2 already sits comfortably atop the 2024 rankings and could yet double the totals of 2024’s current runner up, Dune: Part Two. Should it continue to perform well this week, there’s every chance it could surpass the theatrical gross of 2013’s Frozen at $1.285bn,...

Pixar’s latest runaway success, Inside Out 2, has now become the studio’s highest-grossing movie in history. The nearly decade-long follow-up to the 2015 original has seemingly surpassed everyone’s expectations and has, in a way, saved the studio from a long streak of failure.
In recent years, the studio has been having some major box office duds, beginning with 2020’s Onward being pulled from theaters early due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Their following three movies, Soul, Luca, and Turning Red, were released straight to streaming. 2022’s Lightyear was a massive flop, and 2023’s Elemental, while not outright bombing, failed to meet expectations.
Inside Out 2 opened to $154 million and has since made $543.5 million at the domestic box office and $708 million internationally, for a current total of $1.251 billion at the box office. The Country Bears have had a makeover. The long-running Country Bear Jamboree attraction at Walt Disney World in Florida is reopening this month after being dark for six months, with a familiar look but a new name, a new script and a new score made up mostly of classic Disney songs sung by Americana musicians including Mac McAnally, Allison Russell, Chris Thile and Emily Ann Roberts.
The newly renamed “Country Bear Musical Jamboree” now has McAnally, a country singer-songwriter who is most widely known for being a decades-long mainstay of Jimmy Buffett’s band, serving as the producer and arranger of all the musical material for the revamped attraction. He also sings country-fied versions of “Bare Necessities” (from “The Jungle Book”) and “Fixer-Upper” (from “Frozen”) as a member of the voice cast.

Joy, meet Euphoria. “Inside Out 2” has become the highest-grossing film in the long and distinguished history of Pixar, the studio behind the animated phenomenon.
The hit family film has earned $1.25 billion globally and passed “Incredibles 2,” the animation studio’s previous record holder that earned $1.24 billion worldwide over its run. “Inside Out 2” now ranks as the fourth highest-grossing animated movie of all-time, behind “Frozen” ($1.29 billion), “The Super Mario Bros. As it continues its mind-blowing trajectory, and with Tuesday’s receipts now included, Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 has become the highest-grossing Pixar movie of all time at the worldwide box office. On Tuesday, it passed Pixar’s Incredibles 2 ($1.243B) to get to this latest milestone. The running global cume on Inside Out 2 through Tuesday is $1,251.5M which makes the Kelsey Mann-directed juggernaut the No. 4 animated film ever on a worldwide basis. As a reminder, Japan still has yet to open on August 1.

Disney’s new version of the Country Bear Jamboree, the “Country Bear Musical Jamboree,” debuted today for some people ahead of its official opening on July 17. With recent Disney “refreshes,” I expect the worst but hope for the best. But this one isn’t terrible.
I am a Disney purist, so take that as you will, but even I could see that the “Country Bear Jamboree” needed a major refresh, and I didn’t want to see it leave Frontierland or be replaced with “Toy Story.” Since Disney CEO Bob Iger is on a quest to see how much IP he can shove into every park, I was concerned about using newer Disney songs.
The good!
The animatronics look fantastic! They looked pretty dingy and old before the refresh and now they look great.
All our old favorites were back!
Henry, the Five Bear Rugs, Trixie, Bunny, Bubbles, Beulah, Teddi,...

It’s an emotional day for Pixar and parent company Disney.
On Wednesday, Inside Out 2 passed up Incredibles 2 ($1.242 billion) to become the top-grossing Pixar title of all time at the worldwide box office, not adjusted for inflation. That puts it at No. 4 on the overall list of top-grossing animated films, and the climb is far from done, meaning it could ultimately rank No. 1.
Inside Out 2 finished Tuesday with $1.251 billion in global ticket sales, including $543.5 million in North America, where it’s already the third-biggest animated pic of all time, and $708 million internationally, where is the eighth-biggest animated title ever.
The movie is within days of overtaking Walt Disney Animation’s Frozen ($1.274 billion), and is also virtually assured of jumping Illumination and Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.361 billion). Whether it can overtake Frozen II ($1.451 billion) and take the No. 1 crown is the biggest question mark, but many believe it can.

Sad news to share today. Charlotte Gray died last Friday at age 13 and one half. The daughter of producer Gordon Gray and Kristen succumbed in her battle against the rare degenerative brain disorder Batten Disease CLN6. She was surrounded by her parents, sister Gwenyth, and brothers Callan and Gavin.
Many Deadline readers will remember Charlotte and her sister Gwenyth, because they helped raise millions of dollars in funds that led to breakthrough treatments that gave her a much better life than would otherwise have been possible. Gordon Gray has produced inspirational fact-based sports movies about athletes who overcame long odds, from the aging baseball pitcher Jim Morris in The Rookie to football player Vince Papale in Invincible, to the gold medal-winning U.S. Olympic hockey team in Miracle. Gray mostly put his career on the shelf when he and wife Kristen were given a cold and hard diagnosis to explain...

The makers of A Quiet Place: Day One will need help keeping quiet about the film’s success at the box office, with $6.8M earned in Thursday previews. The total is a record high for the franchise and a more significant opening than some of the summer’s other blockbusters, like Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which opened with $6.6M in previews. If A Quiet Place: Day One keeps up the pace, the third film in the intense horror thriller franchise could shout its supremacy with $50M for its 3-day launch window.
Elsewhere, Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga hit the dusty trailer below expectations with $800K in previews. However, it’s worth noting that the target audience differs from those who rush to theaters for Thursday screenings. For many, Horizon is a Friday Date Night film or even a weekend afternoon wind-down to beat the summer...

Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 keeps on soaring, reaching $799.7M globally through Tuesday. Within that, its international box office crossed the four-century mark at a running cume of $411.9M from 44 overseas markets through Tuesday. In North America, Inside Out 2 rose to $387.8M, moving well up the domestic animated chart.
After 12 days in domestic release, the blockbuster sequel is the No. 10 animated film of all time in North America, having passed Minions: The Rise of Gru, Finding Nemo and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ($382M. 2023). The next animated title it will overtake domestically is Disney’s own Frozen (2013).
Worldwide, it’s a matter of when, not if, Inside Out 2 passes the $1B mark. The Kelsey Mann-directed juggernaut already is well on its way to surpassing the first Inside Out’s $859M global.
On Tuesday, Inside Out 2 added $18.4M in North America (18% of the weekend) for...
