With movies like the revenge-via-circular-saw High Tension and the skin-shredding Piranha remake, director Alexandre Aja has memorably dunked his characters in the blood bucket. Following in the footsteps of shows such as Savage and Line of Duty, Prey explores the lines law enforcement officers are prepared to cross in order to solve crimes or to protect their own interests. Awards nominations are - and always will be - subjective, but when this year's Arqiva BAFTA Television Awards noms were announced this morning (April 9), a few glaring omissions left Tube Talk's head spinning...
Quite rightly, Sean Bean's brave turn in Accused was recognised, Peter Capaldi's standout performance in series two of The Hour drew praise and BBC Two's one-off thriller Murder got the plaudits it deserved.
But what of those overlooked by BAFTA? This feature is for all of those who definitely *won't* be picking up a gong next month.
The Arqiva British Academy Television Awards take place on Sunday, May 12, and will air on BBC One and BBC One HD. The BAFTA TV Craft Awards take place on Sunday, April 28 at the Brewery in London.

BAFTA TV nominations have been announced with Hitchcock film The Girl and the BBC’s Last Tango In Halifax, Accused and Twenty Twelve scoring four nods each. On the international side, Danish/Swedish crime drama The Bridge, which FX is remaking in the States, Showtime’s Homeland and HBO’s Girls and Game Of Thrones were each mentioned. Downton Abbey‘s Hugh Bonneville also has a nod, but not for the hit period drama which scored no nominations. He’s instead in the comedy acting category for Olympics series Twenty Twelve. When combined with the BAFTA TV Craft Awards, which take place on April 28, The Girl has eight nominations, Benedict Cumberbatch-starrer Parade’s End has seven, Accused has six and the BBC’s cancelled The Hour, plus Last Tango In Halifax, Ripper Street and Twenty Twelve each have five. The BAFTA TV awards will be handed out on May 12 in London.

Peter Mullan's bravura performance wasn't enough to rescue Channel 4's incoherent four-part drama about a Brighton crime boss suffering from dementia
The Fear (C4) | 4oD
The Town (ITV1) | ITV Player
A Young Doctor's Notebook (Sky Arts 1)
The Secret Leben of Rubbish (BBC4) | iPlayer
Imagine Jeanette Winterson: My Monster and Me (BBC2) | iPlayer
Inside Claridge's (BBC2) | iPlayer
The Fear ran across four consecutive nights for a total of four hours. The question is whether that was two hours or three hours too long. Those who argue that it was four hours too long have a strong case, but that would be unfair to Peter Mullan, who gave a powerful performance in difficult circumstances.
He played Richie Beckett, a Brighton crime boss with fast-moving dementia. He went from administrative incompetence to hopeless incontinence in about as much time as it would have taken him to pull his trousers down.
