Paramount+’s Frasier revival is returning for Season 2 this month — and it’s digging deeper into two generations of Crane men.
Kelsey Grammer’s Frasier Crane is still rebuilding his relationship with son Freddy, played by Jack Cutmore-Scott, after years of estrangement, and we’ll see Freddy come into his own more this season, executive producer Joe Cristalli tells TVLine. Cutmore-Scott “really hit his stride in Season 2,” he hints, adding that Freddy is filling the role occupied by Frasier’s father Martin (played by the late John Mahoney) on Frasier’s original run. Another day, another small-town mayor refusing to acknowledge that his town could be in grave danger. That's the gist of newly ordered-to-series Widow's Bay, an upcoming 10-episode horror-comedy set for Apple TV+.
1428 Elm has learned that the show will be created by Katie Dippold, best known for writing The Heat, starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy. Filmmaker Hiro Murai (Atlanta) will direct the pilot episode.
Apfel didn't share much else about Widow's Bay just yet, unfortunately, except that it will be produced in-house by Apple Studios and the series is set in a cursed New England town. As mentioned above, something supernatural starts to threaten town residents but the mayor refuses to believe anything is wrong. Sounds like maybe the mayor from Amity Island relocated.
Dippold is credited as the showrunner and creator of the new series, which she also executive produces. Murai will executive produce as well, alongside Carver Karaszewski and Claudia Shin.

Paul Feig has directed some of the most beloved comedies of the last decade, including “Bridesmaids,” “Spy,” several classic episodes of “The Office” and more. So take it from the filmmaker when he explains there’s one key to creating comedy in “the best way” — finding the perfect pair.
It’s something he’s proven skillful at, even when the project falls under a different genre. He brought together Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy on the buddy cop comedy “The Heat,” Henry Golding and Emilia Clarke in the weepy rom-com “Last Christmas,” Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick for the genre-defying “A Simple Favor” — and its impending sequel — and now his new film “Jackpot!” pairs up John Cena and Awkwafina.

Amazon Prime Video’s new action-comedy “Jackpot!” is stuffed with pop culture references, movie homages and fun Easter eggs for industry insiders. It’s also packed with brand mentions, from Airbnb to El Pollo Loco to Shinola, and that’s by design, according to producer-director Paul Feig.
Feig, the seasoned multihyphenate behind “Bridesmaids,” 2016’s “Ghostbusters” and “The Heat,” explained that such cultural specificity is important to grounding characters in the real world. That can be particularly important in farcical vehicles like “Jackpot!,” which is set five years in the future in Los Angeles.
Speaking Wednesday as part of the Amazon Ads Immersion Day event in Culver City, Feig pointed to the old days of 1970s and ‘80s TV when brand names on consumer products were often clumsily obscured with masking tape. Much has changed since then.

After the misfiring Potter-esque fantasy The School For Good And Evil, Paul Feig is back on relatively solid ground with this straightforwardly enjoyable action comedy. Jackpot! occupies a similar space as Feig’s Spy, The Heat, or even a smidge of Bridesmaids: a high-concept action comedy full of wild set-pieces and frenzied action sequences.
Set in the very near future, it plays like a cross between The Purge and It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. Aspiring actor Katie (Awkwafina) unwittingly finds herself the subject of a deadly lottery: whoever murders her will become a billionaire, leading to an enjoyably chaotic manhunt on the streets of Los Angeles. If she survives, she becomes the winner. Only lottery protector Noel (John Cena) can help her — for a cut of her potential winnings.
John Cena is the surprise Mvp here, contrasting his big-bicep buffness with very funny dad humour.

Paul Feig is a gambling man. With “Bridesmaids,” he was willing to bet that an all-woman cast could do raunchy, R-rated comedy just as good as the guys. That paid off handsomely. Then, he was willing to bet big on Melissa McCarthy, with two films, “The Heat” and “Spy,” which were both successes. It was the third McCarthy vehicle where his risk-taking finally got the best of him—2016’s “Ghostbusters” reboot.

The ceiling’s pretty low on the action comedy category — a genre whose biggest hits tend to pepper anemic shootouts with wisecracks from former “Saturday Night Live” stars. With Prime Video entry “Jackpot!,” director Paul Feig switches up the formula, crafting stunt-intensive set-pieces where the action itself makes you laugh. That could mean anything from Awkwafina hiding out among the wax figures of a tacky Hollywood museum to the sight of ex-wrestler John Cena taking on a room of black belts with the “Crazy Rich Asians” breakout strapped to his back.
Why are people trying to kill Awkwafina? “Jackpot!” asks audiences to buy in to a clever but often illogical premise about a radical rule change to the California lottery. Crushing economic peril forcing otherwise sensible characters into playing potentially deadly games is an evergreen sci-fi topic — and usually, the dystopian circumstances in which the characters find themselves aren’t so difficult for us to imagine. Netflix’s Squid Game jumps off from the real crisis of personal debt in South Korea to present a 456-person, multi-round battle for a prize equivalent to $35 million Usd for whoever can outlast all their fellow contestants. Stephen King returned to the idea a couple of times: we’re only a year away from when he imagined a TV network airing The Running Man, a fight to the death only slightly more horrifying than some actual reality shows, and the spirit of The Long Walk lives on in “hands on a hard body” endurance contests. The Hunger Games features players who are drafted into participating rather than affirmatively choosing to enter, except for The Girl Who Lived,...

Jackpot! is a Jackie Chan movie desperately in need of Jackie Chan.
An homage to the great international action comedy star from screenwriter Rob Yescombe, a video game writer-designer now turning to the big screen, this over-the-top frenetic stew not only lacks Chan to make it hum, it also lacks any sense of credibility in order to keep us engaged with its absurd premise.
Set in a decaying Los Angeles (Atlanta subs for it) in 2026 — two years from now, when the filmmakers apparently think America has gone to hell — we are introduced right from the start to the Grand Lottery, a contest that promises untold riches to whoever can survive actually winning it and avoid being killed by the rabid citizenry. But if they succeed in knocking you off within 24 hours, they will get the money promised by your ticket. Think of it as sort of a comedic Purge. Thus,...

Paul Feig has tickled the funny bone several times as the director of “Bridesmaids,” “The Heat,” and “Freaks and Geeks,” but funnily enough, his latest film will instead have him for the first time tackling the horror genre.
Feig is set to direct an untitled thriller for Blumhouse about a really bad roommate, and the film will draw from the same source material that inspired the Netflix true crime docuseries “Worst Roommate Ever.” This is actually the first time Blumhouse is producing both an unscripted series and a scripted thriller based on the same source material.
The film will be an original story written by Stephen Susco (“Unfriended: Dark Web”), but it is inspired by William Brennan’s New Yorker article that served as the basis for “Worst Roommate Ever,” which was also produced by Blumhouse. He’s already dramatized the carnage that can ensue after eating at an iffy Brazilian steakhouse in “Bridesmaids” or performing an emergency tracheotomy at a Denny’s in “The Heat.” Now, Paul Feig will show the chaos that can be caused by a bad roomie.
The filmmaker, best known for comedies like “Spy,” will direct a new feature film for Blumhouse, the production company behind horror hits like “The Purge” and “Get Out.” It’s based on a New York Magazine article by William Brennan that has already led to the Netflix unscripted television series “Worst Roommate Ever.” Blumhouse produced the series, which has been a popular success — its first two seasons both ranked among the 10 most-watched shows on Netflix globally when they premiered.

Paul Feig is set to direct a new movie for Blumhouse based on William Brennan’s New York Magazine article that inspired the Netflix unscripted series Worst Roommate Ever.
In the pic, a newly single woman finds a seemingly perfect gentleman to sublet the spare room in her dream home, but she soon learns that his deceit goes beyond a phony name and application, and she has unwittingly invited a serial squatter into her home who won’t leave without a fight.
"Worst Roommate Ever resonates so much because as the internet has connected so many of us, it also makes it easier than ever to lie about who you are. But then the story is jaw-dropping and keeps you on the edge of your seat,” Blumhouse CEO and founder Jason Blum said. “Paul is the perfect director for this because his work always manages to strike a balance between the dark and the light,...

"Katie's the biggest jackpot of all time. Just find her!" Prime Video has debuted the trailer for a goofy dark comedy called Jackpot!, the latest movie from comedy filmmaker Paul Feig. Set in a near future where a killer lottery has been created in economically struggling California. This has one of the ultimate concepts that acts as a metaphor for America: in the near future, a "Grand Lottery" has been newly established in California - the catch: anyone can kill the winner before sundown to legally claim their multi-billion dollar jackpot. So it's kind of like The Purge mashed up with Lottery Ticket? "You can't win if you don't play." Feig's Jackpot! stars Awkwafina and John Cena, along with appearances by Mgk, Simu Liu, Ayden Mayeri, Seann William Scott, Dolly de Leon, Donald Elise Watkins, and Sam Asghari. This definitely looks like a streaming comedy – a cheesy fight movie with...

Awkwafina and John Cena find that winning the lottery is not all it’s cracked up to be in the trailer for the action-comedy movie Jackpot!
The Amazon MGM Studios film from director Paul Feig begins streaming via Prime Video on Aug. 15. Set in Los Angeles in 2030, Jackpot! focuses on Katie (Awkwafina), a struggling actress who wins the lottery without realizing that the state of California grants everyone else until sundown to murder the winner and claim the prize money without consequences. Helping Katie to stay alive is an amateur lottery protection agent (Cena), who gets a cut of the cash if she survives.
“Katie, you won the lottery. Now, anyone with a losing ticket that kills you before sundown gets your money — legally,” Cena explains in the trailer. After Awkwafina replies that this sounds like murder, he clarifies, “Oh, not in California. It’s just a chance at the big time.

The "Ghostbusters" franchise has been kicking around since 1984, thanks to director Ivan Reitman and the comedic bona fides of primary cast members Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis (who also co-wrote the script), with a little help from Ernie Hudson as the blue collar guy who makes it easy for things to be explained to the audience. But the film series lay dormant for nearly 20 years, until Sony Pictures attempted to reboot the entire franchise from scratch in 2016 with Paul Feig's new "Ghostbusters," which would go on to get the subtitle "Answer the Call." More recently, "Ghostbusters" has been given new life, thanks to the nostalgic legacy-quel "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" and a new narrative thread following the once-estranged family of the late Egon Spengler.

During that time, they recorded such classics as “Shout,” cowritten by Rudy, which in 1959 became their first single to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. The record sold over a million copies. The group went...

The Motion Picture and Television Fund’s Community Care Fund is getting a six-figure assist from Paul Feig.
The filmmaker has donated $100,000 to the fund to help support Southern California members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) that have been affected by Hollywood’s dual strikes. Members of the Writers Guild of America went on strike May 2 over an ongoing labor dispute with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). Members of SAG-AFTRA joined the picket lines on July 14, causing a widespread work stoppage in Hollywood.
“My heart goes out to all the amazing crew people I have had the pleasure of collaborating with on my movies and TV shows who are financially struggling to make ends meet in the midst of this ongoing double strike,” says Feig, who has directed dozens of projects including Bridesmaids, Ghostbusters, Spy, The Heat, The Office, Nurse Jackie, A Simple Favor...

‘Top Chef: World All-Stars’ Winner Buddha Lo on Host Padma Lakshmi’s Exit: ‘I Wish Her All the Best’
Recently crowned “Top Chef” winner Buddha Lo has nothing but admiration for Padma Lakshmi, who last week announced that she was departing the Bravo cooking competition after 17 years and 19 seasons.
“I wish her all the best,” Lo told TheWrap one day after being crowned “Top Chef: World All Stars” champion.
“I look at some of my cooks or some of my mentors who saw me leave,” Lo continued. “You know, [Michelin-star chef] Clare Smyth was extremely upset when I handed my resignation because I wanted to move to a different kitchen and learn more. And then you just have to realize you’ve got to go off and try and do better. And the same thing with Padma, she’s on fire right now.”

The ongoing Hollywood writers’ strike casts a cloud over what otherwise promises to be a solid Cannes film market. Most buyers and sellers came out of Berlin this year “cautiously optimistic” as the (partial) resurgence of the theatrical market alongside a slowly but steadily growing digital ancillary business offers reason to believe reports of the death of the indie industry — widespread in the wake of the Covid theater shutdowns — have been greatly exaggerated.
“I see the investment by Amazon and Apple TV in the theatrical business as a real positive,” says David Garrett of Mister Smith Entertainment, “because it shows they recognize the real value of the theatrical experience.” Amazon’s success with Ben Affleck’s sports-marketing biopic Air, which grossed upwards of $80 million worldwide in theaters before going out online, bodes well for the upcoming rollout of Apfel’s Cannes title Killers of the Flower Moon from Martin Scorsese,...

“Who are we going to trick into making our bats–t movie?”
That’s the question Adele Lim said she faced as she and her partners puzzled over how to get their travel comedy “Joy Ride” made. The answer, the “Crazy Rich Asians” writer said at the movie’s SXSW premiere, where her film got a warm reception, turned out to be Lionsgate. “Joy Ride” — which follows a young Asian woman who travels to China with her friends on a business trip — became a highlight at Lionsgate’s CinemaCon presentation in April.
After years of seeming to fear the funny, Hollywood studios like Lionsgate are making a concerted effort to bring live-action comedies back to theaters. The problem is that comedy now pervades theatrical genres. Superhero movies, romantic stories and horror movies all seem to require a wink and a nudge these days. With so many ways to get a chuckle,...

Sebastian Stan and Maria Bakalova, both veterans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, are attached to star in a new spy comedy for Paramount Pictures with Paul Feig attached to produce and potentially direct, TheWrap has confirmed.
Jenny Bicks, a screenwriter known for “The Greatest Showman” and “Rio 2,” is writing the script based off of an original pitch. Plot details are currently unknown.
Feig is probably best known for directing “Bridesmaids,” which began a string of profitable, high-concept, female led comedies like “The Heat” and “Spy.” In 2016 he directed the all-female “Ghostbusters” reboot, which became a cultural flashpoint, cutting short a potential franchise and leaving Sony to quickly revert to a more traditional approach with the release of “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” in 2021.
Since “Ghostbusters,” Feig directed the delicious dark comedy “A Simple Favor,” “Last Christmas” and most recently “The School for Good and Evil” for Netflix. Feig is currently in production on “Grand Death Lotto,...
