Respectable movie to a degree, but script faltered
As other reviewers point out, there's a retro feel to this film- it's set in 1987. Even though I'm a 1990s kid, it was fun to see the old style cars and diner that lay on this stretch of boulevard, and to hear some of the music of the era. The esthetics were good, but the story pivoted in a weird direction once the main duo stole the car and handed out the drugs. My rating started at a 9 and worked its way down.
The idea for this film mirrors Greece or West Side Story. We have a greasy-haired, confident and blue collared Italian American who crosses paths with a college educated and financially well-off Jewish American. Their love story has some steam (no pun intended), but you don't really see a much potential in a long term relationship. The drag racing scenes also were repetitive.
The writers probably could have done something more creative - such as having both families meet one another or adding a plot twist. This was an okay and slightly funny movie to watch on a lazy Sunday, but not one that's worth revisiting.
