Lynch will play Thomas Laffont, according to a statement from Amazon, “a retired former police partner who comes back to help Ballard run the Cold Case Department. A kind, seasoned detective, and crack interrogator — he’s a rock for Ballard.”

In the parlance of the times, The Bear absolutely ate in the week of its third season premiere.
The FX-produced Hulu show had its biggest streaming week to date for the June 24-30 period. The Emmy-winning series, whose third season premiered June 27, racked up 1.23 billion minutes of viewing for the week — beating its previous high of 1.01 billion minutes shortly after its season two premiere last year.
The Bear was one of seven shows to score more than a billion minutes of viewing for the week, a rarity in the four-year history of Nielsen’s streaming rankings. Former Showtime series Your Honor continued its strong run, leading all titles with 1.58 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix and Paramount+. Another Showtime title, Dexter, saw its viewing rise by 84 percent from the previous week to 1.48 billion minutes.
The Boys (1.18 billion minutes), Bridgerton (1.14 million), Bluey (1.1 billion) and House of the Dragon (1.05 billion) also...

Before David Simon debuted his groundbreaking socio-political tapestry “The Wire” to audiences and helped garner the prestige HBO now only reserves for “Game of Thrones” and superhero spinoffs, he wrote the book on the world of crime and law enforcement in Baltimore. Published in 1991, his non-fiction book “Homicide: A Year of Killing Streets” pools two years of research from Simon’s time spent observing the Baltimore Police Department, which itself followed four years spent on the police beat for The Baltimore Sun newspaper.
Wishing to adapt the book into a feature film, Simon got a copy to filmmaker and Baltimore native Barry Levinson, who felt the material was better suited to a TV series. Levinson shared with Paul Attansio, a former Washington Post film critic whose would go on to write the Oscar-nominated “Quiz Show,” as well as “Donnie Brasco,” and together the team brought the project to NBC, where...

Exclusive: The producers of a buzzy Edinburgh Festival play about J.K. Rowling’s trans views are preparing for protests ahead of the show opening next month.
Penned by Joshua Kaplan, a Hollywood writer whose credits include HBO’s Tokyo Vice, Terf imagines a confrontation between Rowling and the stars of Harry Potter over her views on transgender rights.
The production is topical given Rowling’s near-daily pronouncements and hardened rhetoric on how trans rights have come into conflict with women’s rights. Her posts on X (once Twitter) have put her further at odds with Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint in recent months, and Kaplan sees Terf as a “family conversation” between loved ones with differing views.
In the real world, there have been public exchanges between Rowling and the Harry Potter stars as recently as this year. In April, Rowling accused Radcliffe and Watson of being “cosied...

Let’s be honest. As a Democrat, last night was not great. There is no sugarcoating it. From the first few minutes into the debate, my incoming texts and social media feeds last night were rough. This morning’s are not any better. If there is one thing Democrats are good at, it is panicking. To be fair — and I am a Joe Biden supporter with every bone in my body — it is hard to argue it was a good night for him. Well before the debate even wrapped, Democrats were handwringing and suggesting possible replacement candidates. The messages are coming in from all over — family, friends, top political strategists — indicating a five alarm freakout.
I could only think of the similar incoming from another night: Oct. 3, 2012. This was the night of President Obama’s first debate with his opponent, then-Gov. Mitt Romney. Similar to today, conventional wisdom was that Obama certainly lost the debate,...

We spy with our little eyes something that has our curiosity and our attention — the first trailer for Netflix's new spy rom-com The Union. Hailing from Giri/Haji writer-director duo Joe Barton and Julian Farino, alongside Designated Survivor creator David Guggenheim, this one sees Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry star as Mike and Roxanne, one-time high school sweethearts brought back together when Roxanne — now a super spy — reunites with Mike, spikes him, and recruits him for a high-stakes mission. As you do! Check out the trailer below;
From its meet-cute opening to its high-octane, car-chasing, rooftop-skipping big finish, The Union's trailer tees up a tantalising genre hybrid driven by Wahlberg and Berry's palpable on-screen chemistry. There's a flirtatious frisson to the duo's dive bar banter — "You can handle your liquor now?" chides Wahlberg's Mike; "I could always handle my liquor" Berry's Roxanne claps back — that looks to carry...

Jane Fonda is speaking out about the passing of Donald Sutherland, her co-star from the Alan J. Pakula crime drama Klute.
In an Instagram post on Thursday, Fonda recalled how much she enjoyed working with Sutherland and the many adventures they ended up taking together.
“I am stunned to hear that Donald Sutherland has died,” she wrote. “He was my fascinating co-star in Klute and we loved working together. In this photo we are on the Klute set with director Alan Pakula. Donald was a brilliant actor and a complex man who shared quite a few adventures with me, such as the Fta Show, an anti-Vietnam war tour that performed for 60,000 active duty soldiers, sailors, and marines in Hawaii, Okinawa, the Philippines, and Japan in 1971. I am heartbroken.”
In Klute, Sutherland played opposite Fonda as New York gumshoe John Klute, who is hired to find a chemical company executive who has disappeared.

Eric Schultz knows his way around politics. The Washington, D.C. consultant served as deputy White House press secretary during the Obama Administration from 2014-2017. He’s also worked for Sen. Charles Schumer and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee
But in the last few years, he’s been getting very familiar with Hollywood, consulting for shows like “Succession” and most recently Alex Garland’s A24 drama “Civil War.”
But now, he’s going in front of the camera. Schultz makes his acting debut with a cameo on Thursday’s season finale of Max’s “The Girls on the Bus.” He plays a press aide who Sadie McCarthy (Melissa Benoist) must convince to let her into a VIP cocktail party at the Democratic National Convention.
“They reached out of the blue and asked me, ‘Would you like to make a cameo?’” Schultz tells me. “It took me probably a nanosecond to say yes.

Exclusive: A little over a month after Season 3 of Resident Alien wrapped its run on Syfy, the future of the quirky sci-fi comedy-drama is up in the air. And there is some intrigue over where the series starring Alan Tudyk would continue should it get a fourth season.
I hear there are talks about Resident Alien moving from Syfy to NBCU cable sibling USA Network, which currently doesn’t have scripted originals besides Chucky, which it shares with Syfy. According to sources, a return to Syfy appears unlikely, so USA is Resident Alien‘s only feasible destination within NBCU, whose UCP division produces the adaptation of the comic book by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse.
But a potential Season 4 pickup by USA would come with a major budget reduction, as much as $500,000 an episode, which will be challenging, I hear.

Michael J. Fox says the celebrities who became famous during the 1980s were much “tougher” than the ones rising the ranks of stardom now thanks to social media. Fox become of the most popular stars of Hollywood during that decade thanks to the sitcom “Family Ties” and his role as Marty McFly in the “Back to the Future” movies.
“There’s an expression I referred to when they gave me an honorary Academy Award — somebody said to me the day before, they were talking about getting this award and being famous and they said ‘You’re ‘80s famous,’” Fox told People magazine. “I thought, ‘Wow, that’s cool.’ ‘80s famous. Right, we were different. We were tougher. We didn’t have social media, we didn’t have any of that crap. We were just famous. Left to our own resources. And it was an amazing time.”

Michael J. Fox’s retirement from acting might not be permanent. The actor recently told Entertainment Tonight that he’d be open to returning to the profession bearing the right role. The “Back to the Future” and “Family Ties” star stepped back from acting in 2020 as his Parkinson’s disease made it increasingly difficult to remember dialogue.
“My biggest goal, I think, was to raise a family. We have four amazing kids, and that’s been the big thing,” Fox said about retiring from acting. “And then the other is with the [Michael J. Fox] foundation…[however] if something came up that I could put my realities into it — my challenges — if I could figure it out.”

When news of Adan Canto’s death broke in January, The Cleaning Lady was already well into production on its third season.
At the time of Canto’s death, it was revealed that he had stepped away from the Fox drama before filming commenced.
The plan was originally to bring the actor back as Arman Morales during the latter half of the season.
The Cleaning Lady Season 3 got underway on Tuesday evening on Fox, and much to the fans’ surprise, Arman was present for one of the opening scenes.
He was caught up in a shootout, but before fans saw whether the character perished, Thony (Elodie Yung) and Nadia (Eva De Dominici) had to leave the scene.
There’s no telling whether that signals the end of the road for Arman or if the series plans to reveal he escaped from the situation unscathed down the line to safety.

The family of Tammy Wynette’s fifth husband George Richey has filed a lawsuit against Showtime, alleging that the network’s George & Tammy limited series disparaged Richey as a “villain.”
