Poor Things (2023)
Feminine Quirky Vintage fairytale
As a fan of scary fairytale films, surreal films, the bride of Frankenstein and Lanthimos, I was looking forward to watch Poor Things along time now
Even so, I had the thought that the director couldn't do better/overcome The lobster. (My most favorite Lanthimos film so far)
But I'm glad that's not what happened.
An amazing production design, costumes, performances and original score (especially that!) that made a shockingly match to the film
I will not say again about Stone's interpretation because a lot has already been said and she was truly brilliant.
What really excited me was to change my mind about actor Mark Ruffalo, who I considered to be of limited potential.
I know now, how wrong I was. I absolutely loved and admired his acting in Poor things. (I declare a fan of him from now and on!)
And if I were a member of the Academy, I would definitely give him the actor's Oscar in a supporting role without a second thought!
And not forget to mention the Icing on the cake: the appearance of the iconic German actress Hanna Schygulla (Rainer Werner Fassbinder's protégé) in a surprising little role
The film had all the elements to make it a unique, exciting experience. Quirky, vintage and edgy, pushes the boundaries and opens new cinematographic horizons.
Not for the prudish or the squeamish.
If you decide to watch it, go see it with an open mind.
PS : not mentioned Willem Dafoe above, on purpose. The man is a chameleon. And above criticism. Who am I to judge this wonderful actor?
Actually, the whole cast was flawless...
PPS: If you liked this, speed and watch "the tale of tales" from Matteo Garrone.
Sans toit ni loi (1985)
french drama from a the gorgeous Varda
French film from the mid 80's-a harsh story about a homeless girl. By the Belgian director Agnes Varda who films realistically and courageous in a documentary style. We learn about the heroine through different stories narrated by people who met her randomly. She was a young girl with no job, home, money, friends or parents. Her attitude was weird. Someone offers her a job that she turns down. With the few coins some people handed over she goes to a bar and instead of getting something to eat she puts them into a jukebox and picks songs. And many other similar incidents. I can imagine this is what happens when someone confuses the virtue of freedom with the uncontrollable immunity Great film, recommended
Malina (1991)
Unique and extraordinary!
German director Werner Shroeter unfortunately never became as well known as other directors of his generation and origin (Fassbinder, Wenders, Herzog). I had the chance to discover him years ago and was truly impressed. It's hard for one to describe him. His films are strange, surreal, they are just too much! It's this kind my most favorite, that one I always seek It's as if John Waters, David Lynch or maybe Louis Bunuel dropped something from their uniqueness into Shroeter's mind and then he evolved it into something more special and personal! To all this, add the obsession of the director with opera and then we maybe can have a picture of his work. Anyway, about this film. This flick, "Malina", is a work of art. Isabelle Huppert is a great actress anyway. But, in this particular one, she overcomes herself. If the Oscar is the ultimate award to an actor then we are talking about an award winning performance. Unfortunately though - and this is a huge issue to be analyzed within a few sentences- there are plenty of times when these awards go to actors who don't deserve it. I think it would be fair to acknowledge productions outside and beyond the USA. Of course American independent cinema is amazingly worthy but sadly 80% of it is ignored by the Academy. I am going to rate this film with a nine though it doesn't need my rate. It's so extraordinary that it's above judgment.
