Superman Returns (2006)
Superman Returns...................in style!!
Let me cast your mind back to a time where Superman was the top dog, he was the super hero of super heroes. From batman we had a poxy (yet somehow entertaining) series, from spider-man we had a cheap o' nasty series and some cartoons but from superman we had full-length feature films starring Christopher Reeve who for several generations will always be Superman. Now all was going well, Superman was a hit and so was Superman 2 but then by the 3rd film things started (as they usually do) to take a dive. Superman 3 was out of ideas, some pretty lame baddies and a bit more of a comedy than a proper Superman film, then Superman 4 : the quest for peace. Frankly the title says it all, Superman has to fight Nuclear man, a really poor enemy for the man of steel, it was a complete flop and Superman's 15 minutes of fame was over. So we enter the late 80's/early 90's Batman is the superhero to be but then he suffers the same fate after 2 good films comes a poor 3rd and an awful 4th, but as we get to the new millennium a new superhero emerges as the best. Spiderman comes out at the pictures and is amazing followed by an even better Spiderman 2, but Batman makes a come back with the best film of the lot, so with these to superhero heavyweights battling it out where is the daddy of superheroes?? Well he doesn't take it lying down and comes back with Superman returns, and return he does, after about 10 minutes of getting back to earth he's having a pint with Jimmy Olsen then he's saving a jumbo jet from crashing to earth, he puts on a show and a half not only does he have to stop a jumbo jet but after Lex Luthor (played to perfection by Kevin Spacey) hatches his latest evil plan he has to save the whole of Metropolis, now can Batman and Spiderman do that, I don't think so. Brandon Routh looking like the late great Christopher Reeve helps make this film seem like a sequel and with a performance like Spacey's it's got to be the best Superman yet. So I advise you to watch this film as you won't be disappointed, Superman has returned and he's here to stay.
Batman Begins (2005)
Batman has truly begun!
To start off this review I'd like to go back to the original batman series. Adam West hammed it up in what has to be the campest yet enjoyable version of batman. It was cheesy, it had the POW, WHACK, KABOOM, very very tongue-in-cheek which, brings me to my next point, is what batman eventually became. Batman, featuring Michael Keaton was a good film, keaton was a good batman, he portrayed the dark knight to a whole new army of fans, a darker batman, less camp, plus with a villain such as Jack Nicholson (turning in another great performance) as the Joker it was win win. Where from there? A sequel, Keaton yet again, Batman Returns, not as good as its predecessor but still a thoroughly enjoyable film with the villains being Penguin (Devito) and Catwoman (Pfeiffer) adding something different to the batman series. All is going well, then things start to go sour. Keaton is gone and in comes Kilmer who has to be the most wooden Batman ever, in come the clichés, the tongue in cheek one-liners and so on but Batman still has some credibility until, dare I mention it, Batman & Robin. This ruined the Batman series with Clooney just being the eye-candy for the ladies, the addition of Batgirl (oh dear Lord) and the villains just coming out with the most tongue-in-cheek one liners ever, example Mr Freeze "You're not sending me to the cooler", wrong, oh so wrong. Something had to be done and this was Batman Begins. This film rescues the Batman series single-handedly, it's a shame it didn't start off this way as it might not of died on it's rear. Bale is an inspired choice as Batman bringing a more serious side to Batman, the story is well paced, it's not all talk or just mind-numbing action, it actually keeps you gripped as you want to find more about Bruce Wayne's past. The only reason it misses out on a 10 is the quite pitiful bad guy scarecrow If you've not seen it I don't want to give too much away about the story but throw away all your perceptions about Batman because Batman is back and Batman has truly begun. D-man.
V for Vendetta (2005)
a V good film!
V for Virtuous, V for Vintage, these are but two words that describe V for Vendetta. V for Vendetta is a surprise package as, in my eyes, it is a lesser know DC comics character but it by no means is punching above it's weight by entering the film world. It can be compared to another DC comics favourite Batman, as Batman Begins is very similar to the way this film is laid out and how the story is told, it's dark, it's mysterious, it's awesome! I have never read the V for Vendetta comic, but I want to now. For a start V (the main character) isn't your average muscle bound, chisel jawed hero. He never takes his mask of, he is very well spoke, loves Shakespeare and isn't your goody goody hero as some people might perceive him as the villain depending on your point of view. The best bits of the film have to be whenever there are loads of bad guys trying to gun V down and he just whips out the knives and slashes a cap. I would of give this film a 10 but it has its flaws namely Natalie Portman's quite lame English accent. All in all a damn good film that I could watch time and time again.
The Football Factory (2004)
Biggest load of sh*t I've ever seen!
Where do I begin with football factory? For 1 there is no actual football in it so that's a rip off, another point about it is it's just full of scallys wearing the same clothes at each other just shouting abuse at each other, why don't you just watch jerry springer? It's far more entertaining cos at least in that someone might turn out to be a man when they've always been known as a woman, or they may turn out to be a horse, or a broom! It starts as it means to go on really, it starts off rubbish and carries on being rubbish for the whole, and I say this lightly, 'film'. Even better it's spawned off loads of football factory wannabe's walking round in stone island caps and burberry this and other overpriced scruffy looking clothes calling each other c*nts which most of them actually are. To sum it up Football Factory is the worst film I've ever had the displeasure of watching and I was very disappointed that I couldn't give it a 0, giving it a 1 is being kind.
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
What a way to go out with a bang!
A long time ago in a galaxy far far away arguably the best trilogy of all time was made, Star Wars. As a trilogy it had it all, the characters (namely Vader and Han Solo), the plot ("I am your father") and the 'out of the box' mentality, Star Wars really did set the world alight. With the trilogy ended and fans hungry for more what next? Prequels, based on the film's best loved villain Darth Vader.
Now at the time this seemed a good idea, you'd have to have lived under a rock your entire life not to know about the release of the 1st star wars prequel, everyone was excited, the back story of the galaxy's most evil villain but optimism soon turned to disappointment as the original trilogy had made people hold star wars in such high regard that the phantom menace was quite frankly a flop. It was such a flop that people weren't really that excited about attack of the clones coming out due to it's lame predecessor and daft name, but it was better than phantom menace but still didn't live up to the original trilogy, but the best was yet to come.
Revenge of the Sith, bridging the gap between old and new did live up to the star wars name from the opening shot over coruscant (the best special FX ever) to the emotional ending it left most fans a lot happier. The film starts in spectacular fashion with Obi-Wan and Anakin racing to rescue the captive chancellor from the evil general grievous, and it starts as it means to go on with no fewer than 5 lightsaber battles between the fiercest of enemies and the best of friends that takes you through so many emotions, fear, anger, hate which ultimately lead you to the dark-side and is such Anakin's fate as he makes a great sacrifice to save his love Padme.
The film is so well constructed with outstanding performances from Mcgregor and Christensen that really make you feel the pain and anger that the characters are going through. I, personally, think this is not only the best of the prequels but the best of the lot and gives star wars the credit it deserves, the saga is complete and what a way to end it! Just ask Big Al. D-man.
