San Antonio Pets Alive moving animals out of rescue center due to broken A/C; fosters needed

Highway 151 facility will be closed for three weeks

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio Pets Alive is asking for the public’s help after an emergency forced them to remove all animals from its West Side facility.

The animal shelter said its air conditioner went out at the Building One Rescue Center, located at 4710 Highway 151 near Animal Care Services.

As a result, the building will be closed for three weeks, SAPA said.

SAPA said fosters are urgently needed.

“We need help from the community to help get these pets into foster homes Monday 7/3,” SAPA said in a Facebook post on Sunday.

Fosters were able to take an animal between 10 a.m. and noon on Monday at the rescue center.

The organization said it worked to evacuate more than 50 dogs into foster homes on Monday, but 10 still needed placement.

SAPA will transfer the remaining animals at 5 p.m. to its Medical Care and Adoption Center at 9107 Marbach Road. Fosters can also meet animals at the Medical Care and Adoption Center to take one home.

“We urgently need foster volunteers to provide temporary homes for these animals,” SAPA said in a press release Monday afternoon.

SAPA says the animals it continues to rescue from euthanasia will be put “straight into foster homes. We will need the community’s help now more than ever as these dogs will have a smaller chance of being saved.”

Stephanie Perez Paz with SAPA said, “(The) response from the community has been wonderful. We hope that they can still continue to foster since we do not have an immediate center to place these animals that are on the euthanasia list now that our facility is temporary unusable.”

SAPA is closed on Tuesday for the Fourth of July holiday and will resume normal operations on Wednesday. Those interested in fostering can still fill out an application during the holiday for faster processing.
