San Antonio firefighters say the entire front side of the home, located in the 400 block of Brandywine Avenue, went up in flames shortly before 6:30 a.m.“The occupants stated that they just woke up to fire and smoke in the house,” said Capt. Multiple problems plague San Antonio fire crews, keep them running 36 hours straight
SAN ANTONIO – An overnight fire in a duplex on the city’s Northwest side was only the latest call in a string of non-stop action for one set of San Antonio firefighters. When they got the call after 2 a.m. Thursday, they already had been running for about 36 hours straight on everything from fires to flooding caused by broken pipes. Fire crews, working for 36 hours straight, handled a number of house fires that started in a fireplace. “There (have) been a lot of these fires,” Philipp said. While there are widespread water outages in the city, firefighters were able to tap into a working fire hydrant on that street.
Dozens find shelter from the cold inside convention center in San Antonio
SAN ANTONIO – A place known for hosting meetings became the spot for heating and a shelter from the cold for dozens of San Antonio residents whose homes are without electricity due to the wintry weather. The city of San Antonio opened up the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center Tuesday night to use it as a warming shelter. The convention center will remain open Wednesday, city officials said. Anthony Grey was one of the 220 people who showed up at the convention center, hoping to escape a harsh reality at home. Laura Mayes, a spokeswoman for the city, said the warming center will remain open throughout the day Wednesday.
Duplex fire forces 8 people, cat, out into cold weather
SAN ANTONIO – Members of two families are trying to recover from a fire that destroyed the duplex they called home. The fire broke out around 2 a.m. Friday, forcing eight people and a pet cat outdoors into frigid temperatures. Bexar County firefighters say one resident had called them after noticing smoke in a garage in the 6600 block of Montgomery Drive. “Shortly after we arrived, the flames broke through the roof,” said Chief Robert Hogan with Bexar County Emergency Services District, #10. However, because of the strong winds, Hogan says they were fighting a losing battled.

Bikers were racing before deadly Loop 410 crash involving 18-wheeler, SAPD says
SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – Two motorcyclists involved in a deadly crash that also caused an 18-wheeler to overturn were racing just before it happened, San Antonio police said. One of the bikers, a 30-year-old man, was killed in the crash on Loop 410 South between Interstate 37 and W.W. White Road late Monday night. It does not appear the big rig driver suffered serious injuries. According to one worker who was called to unload the big rig’s cargo, the truck was carrying a load of cacti. At one point, Loop 410 was shut down in both directions in that area.
Fire marshal suspects heater caused fire in East Bexar County storage facility
SAN ANTONIO – The Bexar County Fire Marshal is blaming a heater for a fire that damaged several units at a commercial storage facility. It caused damage to as many as six units at the business, located on Highway 87 East near Stuart Road. Fire trucks lined the highway in front of the business as firefighters worked to put out the flames. Wednesday morning, some of the renters of the burned storage units returned to sort through the debris. However, a report from the fire marshal said there were six units as well as several vehicles that were damaged.

San Antonio Fire Department set to unveil new investigative unit
SAN ANTONIO – A call crackles over a two-way radio with an announcement that normally would get multiple fire trucks rolling. Instead, the dispatch, about a house fire with victims trapped inside, is only a drill meant to get the attention of a brand new investigative team with the San Antonio Fire Department. The recent drill capped off weeks of training, that included the team members becoming state-certified fire investigators. Team members will have to document the scenes with photos. Preventing fires is the main goal, Arrington said, and with the new investigative team, that may be within reach.
San Antonio man arrested again on federal drug charges had prison sentence reduced by Obama
Hilario Nieto, 41, who once had his federal prison sentence commuted by President Barack Obama, was arrested, along with seven others, on federal drug trafficking charges, according to the Department of Justice. In 2004, Nieto was sentenced to 248 months in federal prison on drug charges in the Western District of Texas. Scheduled to be released in 2021, President Barack Obama commuted Nieto’s sentence in 2016. “It is truly appalling that a man whose sentence the President previously commuted chose to flout that generous gift after being released from federal prison by resuming gang-related drug dealing in the San Antonio community,” said U.S. Attorney Sofer. If convicted, the defendants are looking at anywhere between 10 years to a lifetime in prison, according to authorities.
San Antonio father and son arrested for defrauding investors, federal officials say
SAN ANTONIO – A father and son were arrested and charged in connection with an alleged Ponzi scheme that defrauded investors out of more than $800,000, according to U.S. Attorney Gregg N. Sofer and FBI Special Agent in Charge Christopher Combs of the San Antonio division. Earl Roberts Sr., 76, and Larry Roberts, 50, were charged with one count of conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud, two counts of wire fraud, and two counts of mail fraud. According to court reports, the duo owned and operated a company “engaged in the business of ‘factoring’ invoices and receivables from other companies.”Their business ceased operations in December 2016 but continued to solicit investor funds until February 2018, according to authorities. Reports said that “investors were told that their money would only be used to factor receivables when in fact the defendants used investor funds to pay withdrawals and interest payments to previous investors.”The San Antonio residents were arrested Monday without incident, and they have both been released on bond, according to reports.
