Suspect dead after standoff with police at Rio Grande Valley Walmart
WESLACO, Texas – According to Weslaco Police Chief Joel Rivera, a man with a rifle wearing all black clothing, entered the Walmart and had a confrontation with a customer. According to Rivera, the suspect made his way toward the back of the store and officers on the scene ordered him to discard his weapon. The suspect fired at officers and the officers returned fire.”Rivera confirmed that 17 Weslaco police officers and four deputy constables responded to the call. Rivera said the customer who was engaged in a confrontation with the suspect should come forward and offer their testimony to the department. Greg Abbott will travel to Corpus Christi and Weslaco on Tuesday to survey damage brought on by Hurricane Hanna over the weekend. He will speak at the Texas Department of Public Safety Headquarters in Weslaco. Texas Department of Emergency Management (TDEM) Chief Nim Kidd will also be in attendance, according to a news release. On Sunday, the Federal Emergency Management Agency approved an emergency declaration that will provide federal aid. It knocked out power for tens of thousands on residents throughout South Texas into Monday evening, according to the Associated Press.
DPS: Man’s disappearance in South Texas could be a threat to his own safety
SAN ANTONIO – Authorities are searching for an 85-year-old man who disappeared in Weslaco on Tuesday evening. According to a Silver Alert issued by the Department of Public Safety, Hilario Torres Perez disappeared around 6 p.m. Tuesday in the 700 block of Agostadero Street in Weslaco. He is 5-feet, 7-inches tall, weighs 170 pounds, has brown hair and has brown eyes. DPS states he was last seen wearing a flannel button-up shirt and khaki pants. Officials believe his disappearance “poses a credible threat to their own health and safety.”Anyone with information is asked to contact the Weslaco Police Department at 956-968-8591.
