As a leader, you have to adapt constantly! Your goals are constantly building upon one another, all while your team is changing, all while the world and the market are changing around you. However, as a young leader, don’t discount those older, experienced team members. Trends tend to be cyclical and what you see as new and innovative, they may see as something they’ve tried in the past. You are the leader for a reason, so don’t cling to the experienced members, but never discount them either! A good leader builds teams with multiple viewpoints and takes each into consideration in every decision they make. By knowing your team and building trust with your team members, that perspective becomes second nature.

Communication will either make or break an organization. Too much or too little, you slow progress and frustrate people. Clear concise communication is key. Don’t drive the ship! Let the pilot drive. Let the navigator navigate. Let each member do their job so that you can quickly scan the team to see who needs help before they know they need help. Scan the waters so you know what’s coming. Develop a plan with your board of directors, which in the case of a team may be the whole team! In a group of 30 employees, you simply can’t give everyone a say in the decision making process, but you can get ideas from your team leads or department heads. Then get your eyes back on the group, the water, the group, the water and so on.

One of my favorite books was a self help book a leader made me read when I was like 22 was “How to win friends and influence people.” Don’t just ask the question, listen to the answer. Don’t just listen so you can take your turn to speak! As a leader, any time someone says something to me about their personal life, I always follow up with a question derived from what they just told me. It forces me to listen and shows them that I care. Some people want you to know everything about them, and that’s ok. Others conceal their middle name, which is ok too. Let your team divulge to you what they want, and care about it. But don’t get offended or discouraged by those that don’t.

The Army Non-Commissioned Officer Corps has a motto, Be-Know-Do that is imprinted on my heart. Don’t be a lazy leader! You don’t have to be smarter than every member of your team, but you sure better work harder than all of them! If you find yourself leading in an industry that is new to you, then learn it! Like right now! Yeah, it’s hard and it’s gonna take some long hours probably, but that’s the job. If you have a team member that works harder than you, you are failing.
