From my personal experience, I have always best retained information through direct hands-on training by continuous repetition and learning from my mistakes. The saying "if you don't use it, you lose it" is very true! Especially when it's something that was briefly touched on and never actually utilized. I personally benefit by teaching others. It provides me with an opportunity to better understand the material. This is a great way to get real time feedback on whether the information is being relayed correctly and/or address the areas needed for improvement. Role-playing exercises and real-life scenario discussions are great, but participation and comfortability may vary as these are usually done in a group setting or team building.
