Time is of essence in case of database failures and better we are prepared for it, more promptly we would be able to respond and resolve it. In order to proactively prepare , we would need tools for real time monitoring and we well as historical monitoring. Historical monitoring would help in identifying patterns/alerts before the issue actually hits the database. Once the issue hits, go to dashboard of real time monitoring ( via tools like IBM Data Management console ( for Db2)) and look for areas of focus/alerts. This would help you to align your focus on right direction and save lot of time. Sometimes the logs like nmon etc are also required to correlate the issue with OS/hardware/storage/network observation to get a complete picture.
