Networking outside of those groups provides new perspectives, career advancement opportunities and more. You'll often see people who are between jobs at networking events looking for a new job, but similar to gardening, the time to be planting seeds is not while it is raining, but before. If you wait to build a network until you need it, it's too late. I strongly encourage people to volunteer in the professional or networking organization, even if it's just checking people in at the door, active involvement makes a drastic difference in the benefits you will reap from networking.
