I would also recommend recording their practice, so when you provide feedback they can roll back the tape to see or hear exactly what you are talking about - it's easy for people to get defensive if you don't focus on precise moments to improve.

Effective feedback can almost never be reduced to criticism, however smart and insightful it may be. Effective feedback should always be followed by effective, compelling alternative-solution proposals, not to mention logical, relatable explanation why your proposals are better!

I like to clear that up at the beginning: a quick "is there anything specific you'd like me to watch for" can set the tone for any and all feedback that follows. Some folks want a full and honest assessment, and some just want to make sure they don't hyperventilate in the first five minutes. Once you've established what would be most helpful, start and end with the positive, be as specific as you can, and always tailor your delivery to the moment.

Timing is key for giving feedback. When someone has just left the stage, they will experience a drop in adrenaline and not in the right headspace to receive feedback. So wait. Also, ask if they wish to receive feedback. I always ask "How do you think the speech went?" first. You would be surprised at how much they already realise! Be constructive; this is not the time to have a list of "what went wrong" or "weaknesses in your speech". Combine what went well and focus on one point that will improve their speaking.

If you have any feedback to share, make it constructive. Don't share feedback just because. Do it with the intent to help in mind. Do it generously and with care, not with condescendence. Feedback given well can be the start of a great relationship. Use it wisely.
