The only issue with always using the latest tools for research is that sometimes the company doesn’t have those tools. In those moments, we need to advocate for the use of new tools. If this happens to you, research the market to find the best tools for your needs and specific demands. Prepare a brief presentation of the pros and cons of these tools and advocate for their implementation, explaining how they will help you in your daily work.

Step 1 is to identify Your company’s Competitors by writing a list of Direct Competitors, Indirect Competitors, and Future Competitors. It is best to use google along with asking senior leadership who they consider as a competitor. Step 2 you need to gather data and information on each competitor and compare their strengths and weaknesses to your own through SWOT analysis. To gather information read their customer reviews, financial reports, pricing, and marketing / advertisement campaigns. Step 3 is to analyze the data and identify areas of improvement, quick wins, and points of differentiation between your product and competitors. Step 4 is to create plan to implement improvements by setting metrics and KPIs.

My advice is to define at the outset with the management not only the scope of the research, but also the available resources: having a defined budget per year for example allows you to choose which are the main topics to investigate and which research options are best in proportion to your portfolio. Look for the right balance between investigating, understanding and proposing user-centred options that your management can validate and support.

It’s easy to get lost in the sauce when doing user research. I’d value experimenting over hypothesis. Both are valuable if done correctly but a critical feedback to me holds more value than an assumption during research.

Follow global industry leaders such as NNG, IXDF Org, UXLibrary.org, etc. Read one article daily from any of the forums. Moreover, keeping a close eye on major technology launches, such as those by Apple and Samsung, can offer valuable insights into emerging interfaces and user experiences. However, true understanding goes beyond just observing technology; it requires actively engaging with people to comprehend their mindsets, behaviours, and how they interact with and adapt to new technologies.

In UX research, this source is usually the researcher(s) and other UX team members who present findings, suggest actions, lead workshops, and share design ideas. It’s crucial for the UX team to build trust with their audience, which often includes users, stakeholders, and designers.

Furthermore, initiating conversation about these subjects can be quite insightful.
