Monitor materials transactions to identify the root causes. Establish procedures for counting, and double-checking amounts that are moving from one location to another. Communication is crucial, mistakes happen, but everything can be fixed. Let coworkers know how important is to have the inventory in shape.

Don't stuff the channel by selling beyond consumption. Sounds good to sell excess up front initially, but the end result is a customer base that is (too) well stocked, resulting in a death spiral regarding pricing and margins. The customer's need is now out of balance with yours and your pricing leverage has dissipated.

SIOP. Start there. Have real discussions with your suppliers and share as much real time information with them as you can. Have a sales and marketing team that is in the trenches with your customers and has real conversations with them about their buying priorities, not just their buying preferences. Rigorously root cause the smallest inventory discrepancies found in your daily processes and cycle counts, and drive those gaps into to oblivion. I agree with some of the above if you are discussing retail inventory though. Normally, you determine min/max levels based on non-demand tracked items to ensure there is no potential stock out opportunities due to normalized usage patterns.Then establish a robust cycle count practice to ensure the inventory is always accurate. Demand oriented items you setup the ERP to evaluate for demand vs stock. This would need to be taken into consideration vs manufacturing lead times to ensure you have adequate time to source/deliver.

One thing I find very important is relevant stakeholders allocating enough resources for inventory management that is both human and material resources.
