Students are competing for your attention in class. How do you prioritize and manage their needs effectively?

Según mi experiencia, el docente debe poder discernir cuál es el objetivo de la pregunta por parte del alumno. En mi opinión se pueden dividir en tres grupos: 1. El alumno quiere demostrar que conoce el tema. Consejo. Elogiar el conocimiento del alumno y construir sobre su respuesta a fin de enriquecer la discusión en clase. 2. El alumno quiere comprobar si el profesor conoce realmente del tema. Consejo. Mantener la calma y proporcionar una respuesta bien fundamentada. Si no se sabe la respuesta, admitirlo y proponer investigar el tema en conjunto. 3. El alumno quiere ampliar su base de conocimientos. Ofrecer respuestas detalladas y contextuales, y sugerir recursos adicionales para que el alumno pueda seguir explorando el tema.

De acuerdo a mi experiencia como docente en el nivel universitario, advierto que muchas cátedras son llevadas en forma teórica. Considero que la práctica es fundamental para el buen aprendizaje como así también la mejor formación para los futuros profesionales.

It is important to acknowledge the diverse needs of students in your classroom. I had a few students who interrupted while I was speaking during lecture to have my attention and feel good about themselves in front of the whole class. As a teacher, it was important for me to not let that student feel bad/judged about himself or herself. I try to be impartial with each student and allow only relevant conversations during the class. This way it helped me reduce the unwanted interruption.

Balancing the diverse needs of students can be tough, but recognizing their individual needs is a necessity. In my experience, I start by observing students very closely. One student, Riya, juggled with reading comprehension, requiring extra guidance and patience. Meanwhile, Rahul sought guidance in his problem-solving skills. By actively listening, I identified these needs. I made peer-support groups where students like Rahul and Riya could help others, allowing me to focus on those needing extra attention. This wmethod not only managed their demands but also portrayed a supportive classroom environment, fostering each student felt valued and heard.

En una clase donde los estudiantes compiten por la atención, como el Burro en Shrek diciendo "¡Pregúntame! ¡Pregúntame!", es crucial gestionar y priorizar sus necesidades de manera efectiva. Shrek, como docente, establecería expectativas claras desde el principio, fomentando un ambiente de respeto y turnos para hablar. Utilizaría técnicas como levantar la mano y rotar las oportunidades para que cada estudiante participe. Además, ofrecería actividades en grupos pequeños para que todos tengan la oportunidad de expresarse. Shrek también sería atento a los estudiantes más tímidos, asegurándose de que todos tengan su momento para brillar, no solo los más entusiastas.

Establishing clear boundaries is essential for maintaining classroom control. Let students know the appropriate times and ways to seek your attention, such as raising hands to speak or writing down questions to be addressed later. This approach teaches respect and patience while allowing you to address their needs without constant interruptions. By setting these boundaries, you create a structured environment where learning can flourish, and everyone understands the expectations, contributing to a more effective and harmonious classroom.

Setting boundaries at the start of the course and revisiting them throughout the semester is so important. We talk about appropriate expectations for communicating with me, their classmates, and other teachers through email and in class. I also let them know that if they email me at night that it may take up to 24 hours for me to respond. I encourage them to plan ahead so that if questions do come up, they aren't looking for an immediate answer the night before a project or large assignment is due.

I find classroom management to be highly effective in maintaining a balanced and disciplined learning environment, gaining students' attention, and promoting a smooth flow of communication among learners. Studies show that students tend to perform better when they understand the limits and expectations within which they operate.

Todos los grupos de estudiantes "miden" a los docentes desde el primer momento que entramos al aula. No se comportan del mismo modo con un docente que con otro. Funcionan de forma diferente con estímulos diferentes. Por eso, creo que nuestro ejercicio docente tiene que ser cercano a los alumnos, acercarse pero sin romper las barreras que sanamente nos hacen ser "docentes" y "alumnos". Quizá la mejor imagen que se me ocurre es la del Maestro y los discípulos, que aprenden conviviendo y compartiendo juntos. Los limites que siempre son necesarios para no confundir una relación que se puede vivir sanamente, sin confundir los roles de cada uno. El respeto se da y se exige. Los docentes tienen que respetar a los estudiantes y viceversa.

The Self-Determination Theory (SDT) posits that fostering autonomy, competence, and relatedness in students can lead to more intrinsic motivation and better educational outcomes.

Some classrooms have a ‘help yourself shelf’ or an ‘enable table’. This contains many useful resources that students can independently go and fetch as and when needed to support them if they become stuck. Establish a boundary by where the student has to go and get something and have a go at self-supporting before asking a peer. If they have exhausted the resources and a peer can’t help then they can come to you.

"3 before me" was always something I told my middle and high school students. If they had a question that I probably answered sometime in class, or that they can find the answer to within the class materials, I encourage them to "ask a friend first." Obviously, if they are looking for direct support on something specific, I encourage them to ask those questions if they are stuck or need clarification. The more we can encourage students to do some critical thinking and collaboration, the more independence and confidence they will develop as they practice working on different skills.

Allocate your time based on the complexity and importance of each need. Address simpler issues quickly to free up time for more complex ones. I usually use timers in my class to complete a given task on time. This can make them less distracted and more focused.

Balancing student attention in class requires a strategic approach to ensure all students feel heard and valued. Begin by setting clear expectations for participation and use a system that allows equal opportunities, such as rotating who gets to speak or using technology to manage turn-taking. Prioritize urgent needs by addressing questions that benefit the whole class first, and schedule one-on-one time for more personalized concerns. Effective time management and active listening are crucial; they show students that their voices matter while maintaining a structured, focused learning environment. This approach fosters an inclusive atmosphere where all students can thrive.

We should allocate specific times during the lesson for addressing individual questions, such as during group work or independent study periods. This ensures that instructional time is maximized, and all students receive the attention they need without disrupting the flow of the class

A timer is a good way for students to visually see what their deadline is.Visual Learners also can push your class forward if other peers see them on task

Make yourself very available by electronic means like text and then accelerate the contact interval and type of contact until the student in need can hear your voice and see your face. And recognize that many of these students are in crisis. So it’s not about making them better until you are sure of their behavioral stability. But they must have stability to progress from exam week to graduation to employment.

As an educator, I've found that keeping the entire class engaged is essential for meeting the diverse needs of my students. Para mantener a toda la clase involucrada, el sistema que mejor me funciona es tener a todos los alumnos activos, todo el tiempo. Para conseguirlo, les propongo un cuestionario individual acerca del contenido que acabo de impartir (ya sea online o presencial). Disponen de un minuto por pregunta, y una vez han contestado y sin que todavía sepan cuáles son las respuestas correctas, los coloco en grupos pequeños (de 3-4 personas online, de 5-7 personas presencialmente) y resuelven el mismo cuestionario en grupos. Los grupos entregan sus respuestas simultáneamente (disponen de 1.5 minutos por pregunta). A continuación, guío la discusión de las respuestas, centrada en que cada grupo justifique su respuesta. Esta actividad impide la distracción.

If you plan engaging lessons that have activities that are student paced it provides opportunities for all learners. Directions and practice examples are direct teach parts before students engage in activity. Using various levels of questioning encourage students to explore deeper understanding.

In my experience as an online teacher, I only like to work with small groups of maximum 4 students, so that everyone is taking their turn to interact with the exercises. I also take it in turn for every student to speak, so that no one gets the chance to get bored or confused.

In a class of 30 students using different methods of teaching atleast 6 to 7 students can be dealt with... All students are of course attention seekers. Using flipped class rooms, paired activities , group activities we can guide these attention seekers in a week. Students too know that a single teacher cannot encourage all at one go .

Any new teacher is being recruited in a school and when they start teaching ,most of the students want to get attention. In such cases I feel that the Head of the Depatment,class teacher subject advisors should brief them about the students. Generally as a teacher, should have a class room management to make sure all the students are taken care equally. Also set the class rules which will help all the students to be attentive too.

Every class or section that you are taking is different from others. Some may have all high achievers and/or some may have few talkative and differently abled children. So you have to change your teaching strategies and time allocated for lesson planning accordingly.

It is easy to learn from failure because failure is obvious. It is important to try to improve on perceived success as well. A good opener for this type of reflection is to ask the question "was my lesson as perfect as it could possibly be", leading to an obvious "no". Well, if it wasn't perfect then there's room for improvement, and now you just have to find where that room is and strive to fill it. Little improvements add up. If at any point you are similar to the teacher you were 5 years ago, it means you haven't improved in those 5 years. If you look back a few years and remember mistakes you've made, you should not feel shame. This means you've improved. Perfection is goal not to be achieved, but striving for it will get you far.
