What are the best ways to start a speech confidently?

You want to ALWAYS have an attention-grabbing opening? Here we go ... ......................... The very very best way to open is .. to use silence. Take time to feel that your are in the right physical position. Look around at your audience. Smile. Give them time to look you up and down (and decide if they think they are going to like you). Pause. Make your audience wait. They will be all the more eager for you to beging

Two most used methods I use in my talks are: 1. Starting with an event / incident,, for example ,, “last night when I left for home, I told my wife sitting next to me that oh! I forgot something,, She asked, what did you forget? I said I forgot …… gets the audience thinking 2. Going on the stage and look into the audience at a glance with a friendly smile and ask in a soft tone , “how are you this morning / evening? Lot of them say they are ok. Many times I would ask them to nudge their person on the right, and tell them their name and how are they feeling. I find this as a great energy booster and fills the room with warmth.

There are many ways to start but my own favorite is to use something like a word or a number that is a bit of a riddle and gets the audience guessing as to its relevance to the talk. It gets people thinking and engaged much faster than any of my other starting techniques.

Aside from the usual attention-getting openers mentioned by my peers: ➔ stating a statistic, ➔ defining a term, ➔ or quoting a well-known person, I love to follow that with a confident: "My name is Jill Diamond and today ➔ I'm going to show you... ➔ We're going to explore... ➔ I'll convince you that..." Versions of the above show your skill and control.

However, it is extremely important to adjust our stories, facts, or questions to the audience that is listening. Ask yourself these questions: - Will they understand the fact/question as I do? - How can I tailor the story to address one of my audience's pain points? - Is it appropriate to start with this question or story? By following this approach, you will ensure that your audience is more engaged and ready to listen to your message.

Another option is to network with the audience beforehand if possible and then include a story someone told you to show that you understand the group and what they need. Doing this helps the audience embrace you and warms them up to hear what you have to say. A great speaker can gather a few points prior to the presentation and add them in so the group feels the program has been tailored to them. If you can't network before the meeting, sometimes you can call people days before the event to gather the intel you need.

Lembre: sua voz não pode parecer um lago calmo e parado: precisa ser um mar revolto, com ondas.

Yes, to clear structure in design, BUT not always in delivery. Think about a great call back at the end of a comedy set, the more unexpected it is, the more rewarding it is. Or a great moment in a novel when stories converge. The brain loves a story, and it loves patterns it can recognise (structure) but it really LOVES a bit of novelty too. So I'm all for structure and signposting so audiences don't feel lost. Still, if you can also weave in a few surprises where stories overlap, or you answer earlier questions at unexpected moments. The audience sees the structure behind the structure, it will elevate everything.

Before you write the talk, find your core message or through line. Then ask yourself if every sentence is helping that, if not cut it. Your story should resemble a 3 act structure with a beginning middle and end. Sometimes you might say that act 1 is you setting up the story, then act 2 is the meat of the story, act 3 is the summary or repeating the highlights. There are some that will say tell them what you are going to say, they tell them what the content, then tell them what you just said. It is a simple format to keep you focused until you be come a more experienced story teller.

Rehearse and rehearse and rehearse until it seems like you did not rehearse. Remember that rehearsal and repetition are not always the same thing. In a rehearsal you will explore options, find new ways to tell the truthful subtext, test your body language and blocking .. then you will repeat what is working well. Learn the story and never memorize it. Memorizing will get you into trouble if you get distracted but learning will always allow you to say calm and get back on track!

When it comes to delivery, the goal isn't to memorize every word, but to become comfortable with the flow of your ideas. Start by creating a simple outline of main themes and key points rather than writing a full script. This allows for more natural, conversational delivery. If you're just starting out, try developing a simple formula, such as beginning with a relevant quote or thought-provoking question followed by a problem, solution, outcome structure. Practice until it feels effortless, then gradually expand your comfort zone. Remember, the key is to internalize your message and key points, not recite them verbatim. This approach will help you sound more authentic and confident, even if you don't recall every planned word.

Pauses, like each word or movement, is a tool. Do not over use them as it will create a pace issue. Use them with purpose. Think of it like feeding someone food, you put it on a spoon and give it to them, little by little. You would not just throw a bowl in their mouth and hope for the best. You give them a bit and let them chew it, swallow it then you give them more. Information is the same, your pauses are the time when they close their mouth to take in your message. Keep in mind that pauses are a tool in your talk which means that where you place the pause also matters. Use it carefully and only when it is the right time to do so.

When coaching beginners, I advise them to look slightly to the back of the room if they’re nervous about eye contact. Also, taking a long breath before starting to show the audience your present and calming yourself. Lastly, placing your hands comfortably interlocked near your stomach can help stop fidgeting and remind you to use gestures effectively.

Your audience is thinking three things when you walk on that stage: Who is this person? How are they going to solve my problem? And why should I care? Start by giving them a reason to care—hook them with a story, a question, or a compelling statistic. Then, establish your credibility by briefly telling them who you are. Finally, explain how you will solve their problem. BOOM!

Show up authentically as a speaker is important. Years ago, I emceed a diversity conference and one of the main topics was 'showing up authentically'. While I normally wear professional attire to conferences - I asked the planning committee if I could show my personal side by having different outfits on during different transition points. They approved. As a result - I rode my bike on stage, wore cowgirl hat and then wore my typical work outfit. It was a fun way to engage the audience and live out our theme by showing up authentically. To date, I have people come up to me and remember how unique the conference experience was.

Depending on your experience, consider the audience, the size of the room, the layout, maybe check out the room and stage, or podium before you speak. You need to prepare for the moment up there, and when you walk up, realise the room is huge, hundreds of people, plus hot, bright white lights are on you, it is too late. And yes, rooms can be impressive, an audience of a few hundred+ is impressive, remember :) Then all the above is true, but also, as a small hint, start easy, with something you identify with, maybe the question from the top, a nice joke leading into the topic, maybe a good pic, if they can be used, and go from there.
