You should have that information handy right after that first interview. And, be sure to focus on what is important to you in the total compensation and take all of it into account - 401(k), time off benefits, incentives, etc.

It needs to be carefully developed AFTER there has been at least some establishment of mutual interest in moving forward. It just makes sense to handle this in the “middle” of the process so as to not waste either the employer or the candidate’s time going forward if in fact there is a mismatch on likely compensation. With the pay transparency trend continuing to become the rule rather than the exception, employers and candidates are well advised to become comfortable dealing openly with this topic before any offer is extended.

Express you excitement for the position and show your skills that suits for the position and creat a sense that you are the best person for this position. Eventually the hiring manager will seek some fall for the salary negotiation. Always try to create a best image of yourself and be ready for the position that receives for you

One has be reasonable and realistic in expectations, employers know the worth of the candidate so if he/she has performed well during the interview rounds, good compensation will be offered. My personal experience is that many times candidates compare them with their friends and sometime ask very high salery which in the range of more than 150% jump, this should be avoided. It creates negative impact and might work in negative. Candidate should give logical reason for hike, if someone has worked for more than 5 years and now looking for a change, he/she can always ask for market correction if their current employer has kept his/her compensation low. If someone is moving from tier 2 citi to tier 1, then asking good hike is justified.

I agree with being reasonable with yourself and the company you are negotiating with. Sometimes companies just don’t have the budget. If able, get the salary question out in the open early on so there are no surprises when it comes time for the offer and no time is wasted between both parties. But always make sure you are true to yourself by making it clear what value you can bring.

Work life balanace is key. Money obviously bring financial benefit but does not always offer you a worklife balance that is key to your life outside of work, both physically and mentally. That is what creates job satisfaction

Besides your salary, think about other good things and advantages that you can talk about when you're getting hired. This might be things like chances to learn more in your job, being able to work flexibly, getting more time off, or extra money based on how well you do. If you look into these things, you might make your whole deal better and meet your needs better than just with your salary.

Look beyond base salary and consider other elements of the compensation package, such as bonuses, incentives, benefits, equity, and perks. Evaluate the overall value of the offer, including non-monetary benefits and opportunities for advancement.

Authenticity is key! Consider where you are in your career and where you want to go. Forward progression in salary and title, isn't always forward progression. Sometimes taking a step back or leaning into another industry or role will pay dividends far beyond current comprehension.

It's even better to provide two options like, "If you can provide me with $75k in base salary, and $100k in equity, OR $90k of base salary, $60k in equity, and two extra vacation days, I can sign."
