What do you do if your nonprofit leadership strategies are outdated?

Presumably your fundraising is failing. The presumption is that new strategies are required. Perhaps the first step is to review your team and their efforts. Make sure you have a team prepared to do the research and and execute your strategy. If it is not your people then your strategy requires changing. If your people aren’t prepared to change then new people required.

For mission based organizations - it can be difficult to get a grasp on the actual impact of projects, particularly in the short-term. Therefore, step back before declaring failure and be sure that your strategy is actually falling short. After this assessment, the key is first to go to your board, leaders, volunteers for their frank assessment. Getting consolidated and informed feedback from those who know your organization and are dedicated to its mission is best.

Evaluating nonprofit leadership strategies begins with a close look at strengths and challenges, identifying gaps between current operations and stakeholder needs. Additionally, an important lesson from my experience involves checking how engaged our internal staff and volunteers are. This extra step of evaluation can reveal critical insights into the effectiveness of our strategies, providing a fuller picture of where we need to make adjustments. This approach highlights the need for a leadership style that adapts by considering internal and external factors.

Life's not perfect. Your perfect strategies will get stale at some point. Given the complexities of our time, it's just super important to dig deep into what creates breakthroughs out of the slump, inefficiencies, or waste being experienced as a result of the strategies not working. For Big Strategies, get back together and pivot. For small strategies, take the time to create a postmortem and see where things slide or break from the norm and do a remedial measure. You don't have to throw the baby with the bathwater.

Instilling a culture of change is important at these shifts in strategy. Your staff and volunteers or board members may be wedded to the old way of doing things. You have to communicate your pivot, why you are doing it, and communicate it again, and again! Repetition is the heart of learning. And learning leads to growth change.

Important for the non-profit leader is to beware of quiet creative burnout. To sharpen the saw - don't necessarily look at the usual go-to offerings for practical professional improvement. Look completely outside the usual domain, and seek to build creative cross pollination.

Are we siloed in our work or finding new ways to engage multiple areas in creative or collaborative efforts? Are we growing as leaders or encouraging our team to grow? There are a number of leadership development programmes now available for leaders and middle-managers. Do tap into your networks and also probe organisations like Acumen Fund, Bridgespan, etc. that can point you to their specialised courses and support. Most of them require an application so be prepared to give that a good shot. Would also suggest creating a group of advisors and mentors that you can use to brainstorm, work through challenges, and share ideas. Different perspectives help you come up with better answers.

The essential competencies to develop are strategic thinking, digital literacy, teamwork, emotional intelligence, flexibility, financial management, leadership, team building, evaluation, and effect assessment.

As a leader, it’s important to set a culture that encourages questions/curiosity, professional development (and sharing learnings with the group), and academic enhancement. An example of this might be Leadership sharing their areas of growth with the team and expressing their plans to improve their practice(s). Additionally, developing a policy that promotes/incentivizes community engagement and volunteerism can inspire the team to refresh their work practices as well.

Engaging your team goes beyond just staff; include volunteers in the conversation too. Setting up open forums and decision-making roles not only empowers them but also fosters a sense of community. From my experience, people are drawn to a nonprofit because of its mission but they stay for the camaraderie and the sense of being part of something larger than themselves. Fostering a culture of mutual respect and shared objectives encourages staff and volunteers to deeply invest in the organization. It's crucial to build an atmosphere where all team members believe their contributions matter, and that they have a meaningful role in shaping the future.

Logos, ethos, and pathos - are the three modes of persuasion advocated by Aristotle. Empathy is one corner of the triangle to persuade your community to continue to support your mission driven organization, but it must be accompanied by logical thinking and factual evidence-based decisions and plans, as well as the experience and authority of a leader's character and everyday actions.

A number of initiatives that can be undertaken to engage the team: - Regular townhalls, preferably monthly - Smaller cohort meetings for leadership and mid-management - A structured L&D calendar - Office hours with HR - Project spotlights where project teams can share more detail about their work to the broader organisation - A clear rewards and recognition programme - can be non-monetary - Articulating career development and growth very clearly - employee profiles and team call-outs on social media channels

Leverage your funders as brainstorming partners. They have visibility across a number of organisations they support and can offer new perspectives and independent feedback on your work. Speak with and listen to your beneficiaries. E.g. track student learning but also speak with their parents to gain feedback about the work. Use the Monitoring and Evaluation team and integrate them into programme design and measurement. Use Monitoring and Evaluation to stay on top of programme performance and course correct when the data tells you that something isn't working.

This direct line of communication is invaluable for making informed decisions and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Tried and true leadership strategies do not necessarily outdate themselves but may need to be contemporized in a way that allows them to resonate with a modern leadership body. Old ideas can and should be considered when we are innovating. An approach that worked well may no longer do so, and an approach that previously failed may be ripe for implementing now. An organization's leadership typically changes with terms of office, and sometimes so must our leadership strategy, so that the leading body has the necessary tools at their disposal for success.

The term 'outdated' is not a helpful way to assess leadership strategies in the nonprofit sector. Setting aside approaches that are outright harmful, any strategy can be effective in the right context. Rather than fixating on what's trendy, we should focus on what works, for a given organization at a given time. What's really important are the assumptions that prop up your strategies. If your leadership strategies are based on faulty assumptions - scarcity mindset, white supremacy, paternalism - you have a problem. And even the trendiest approaches can be driven by unacknowledged assumptions that derail your strategy!
