What do you do if your team members are in conflict and you need to resolve it as a supervisor?

There are four sides to every issue. It’s important for supervisors to take a tactical pause and ensure they properly understand the issue prior to taking action. Nothing impacts trust and credibility faster than action informed by imprecise information.

Don’t be so quick to quell the dispute. Pause. Evaluate. What is the nature of the conflict? Are the parties in dispute over something operational? Technical? …or is it a personal dispute? While we tend to reflexively reject the notion of conflict, a dispute between colleagues can be a sign of mutual trust, investment, and diverse perspectives. Nurture the conflict. Listen carefully. Make sure the conflict remains topical and doesn’t digress into anything personal. As long as the conflict remains aboveboard, validate the behavior. Share your approval for the airing of varied perspectives and for the manner in which the engagement occurred. If appropriate, highlight the productive and prosocial nature of the interaction when appropriate.

Also look at the evidence, this depends on the circumstance however may include; - KPI’s - Grievances - HR files - Sickness - Performance - Other stakeholders statements Each situation is different and needs to be based on its own merits.

Take all perspectives into account before moving on with other procedures as all story’s will no doubt be very different and that’s where your experience should come in

Conflict resolution doesn’t require hasty decision or judgment. It’s best to make all parties involved understand the effect of their conflict on the job. Diplomacy is a key factor as a leader or a supervisor

It can be difficult knowing when to remove yourself from the situation. Very rarely are people Neutral. Everyone has life experience which will create an unconscious bias. However when you know there is a conflict of interest be confident enough to remove yourself.

Impartiality is a very key part of conflict resolution. The supervisor must be fair and be seen to be fair as well. There should be a conscious, deliberate effort not to take actions that could be misconstrued as being biased. Listen patiently to each party, get their point of view (side of the story), weigh all the information prior to deciding on how to resolve the situation. Partiality alienates the team members, destroys trust and set the stage for future conflict.

its best to sleep over it and figure out a way to resolve the issue and stay neutral bearing in mind that your way of resolving the problem could cause a split or division among team members

Always important to not provide an answer at the spot, tell them to return to thier spots and that you will make sure to resulve this matter after going over the details. however, also address the fact that drama in the office is not accepted and any issues should be addressed in the right way through the person in charge.

Some people are just adverse to everything you represent. They can spin up belligerent attitudes and be cantankerous to all employees. You cannot please all the people all the time. Take a moment and survey the scene. Using the fruits of the spirit may glean understanding and respect. Give the rest to God and do not carry the burden.

All parties must be free to say their minds without fear of being intimidated. It is only in the atmosphere of free and open communication that the parties can really say what they intend to say, and not what they are 'permitted' to say. There can be no proper healing if the issues are not aired out.

First as a supervisor i have to be neutral and make sure im not seen as biased. I will call them to a round table talk where everyone is free to talk about what hurts them and why they are in conflict. Resolve the issue and we are back to work

It is important to resolves conflicts however considerations need to be given to certain factors which affect effective resolutions: - Don't be in a rush to immediately intervene as a Supervisor. Trust your team. - Accept that conflicts are necessary, useful even, & are best retooled as "ice-breakers" for effective understanding of team dynamics. - Accept that conflicting parties may feel their grievances are/were not properly heard. This view can be subjective & might need to be 'thin-sliced' extensively with an effective approach with the aim to suss out niggles & hidden factors. - Pushing for an outcome that seems amicable enough but fails to address re-occurence of conflict-generating situations/scenarios can be a potential limiter.

One thing I have found helpful is to encourage feedback and openness. Foster a culture of feedback and openness where team members feel comfortable providing constructive criticism and suggestions for improvement.

Hear out each team member involved in the conflict without interrupting. Understand their perspectives and emotions behind the issue. Check in with the team members periodically to ensure that the conflict has been resolved satisfactorily. Offer ongoing support if needed. Clarify the expected behavior and boundaries moving forward to prevent similar conflicts in the future. Reinforce the importance of professionalism and teamwork.

Listen and adapt your working methods which can be hard, especially if this conflicts with the organisations aims and objectives / mission statement.

Try pacifying waring partners. Make it restore work Learning full about issue and then make small healthy moves to calm down

I have found that sometimes coworkers just need someone to vent to, someone willing to just listen. They may ask for advice but the key point is to remain neutral and just listen. Be the person they can rely on.
