Accountability is tricky and requires a level of agency for the person or group to which the bias has been leveraged. This allows, typically, a subordinate or fellow team member to be able to speak into a situation that has caused harm to themselves or others. Holding a ranking member accountable can also cause further harm where there isn’t a clear indication of trust from person-to-person. If indeed the team recognizes that biases exist, we must allow the opportunity for the affected to effect causation.

Encouraging accountability among your team members is key to overcoming unconscious bias. When individuals are held responsible for their actions and decisions, they are more likely to be mindful of their biases and strive to make fair and objective choices. This accountability can be reinforced through regular feedback, performance evaluations, and a commitment to continuous improvement in recognizing and addressing unconscious biases.

Cultivating diversity should be a primary goal for all businesses, we are working in a very multi-cultural world. There is a high degree of economic migration and cross-cultural pollination adding huge value to to every strata of business. Colleagues bring different ways of thinking and creative ways of problem solving. Cultural belief systems and work ethics can add much value to organisations but these need to be respected and welcomed. It is 2024, there is no place for racism and discord based on ignorance and prejudice - we are seeing a rise in fascism across Europe and the West - this is present in organisations and needs to be excised and removed permanently by enshrining policies that protect psychological safety for all employees.

You could try taking the free online Implicit Association Test (google it) but use it as a learning tool rather than a perfect diagnostic. Also, if you have inadvertently made someone feel bad or feel exclusion, and you have gotten feedback about it, that is a great time to do some self-reflection about your biases.
