I have a trick I use for identity and branding design. I start with a "web brainstorm" or a "word cloud"; I choose one word that represents the brand (or UI, or logo, or whatever product) and I start branching off with synonyms (Thesaurus.com) of that word and create a big cloud of words or small sentences that evoke a similar message. You'll eventually end up with wording far removed from what you started with, but ultimately inspire thoughts you would have otherwise overlooked.

Is there anything else your band offers that they don’t that could help you stand out? THEN move to looking at esthetics that fall within your brand personality and style. But don’t start there until you layout the basics of functionality and flow that you need for your site. You will find innovative ways to improve your layout through other industries, but it’s important to know what you NEED to showcase first.

If building a website for a smaller part of a larger organization, pay close attention to details on other sites within your organization. What color schemes and fonts do they use, and where do they appear? What design elements are most common? How do those sites highlight key information in eye-catching ways? Little design details matter, even if they seem insignificant. Paying close attention to them can help lend legitimacy to your site and create a more professional appearance. It’s sometimes helpful to look at the code on other sites within your organization to get the specifics (F12 on Windows). Note hex codes, font names, styles, and object classes. These are important for continuity throughout your overall organization.
