Here's how you can capitalize on your transferable skills after a layoff.

When considering what transferable skills to speak to or highlight when switching job titles or even industries, first look at what skills are being asked for and what the primary tasks or responsibilities of the role are. Then think about what the base need of that skill or duty is and look to see where you've applied it elsewhere. Customer Service, Cross Collaboration, Project Management and Time Management are often easier to speak to. They correlate to, "Providing timely and accurate support to internal/external stake holders, building and maintaining positive lines of communication with functional units, while working towards strict deadlines across competing priorities." Highlight growth in abilities even if no change in title.

To effectively showcase your versatile skill set and adaptability on your resume: Targeted Resume: Customize your resume for each job application to demonstrate how your transferable skills align with the role's requirements. Achievement-oriented: Rather than just listing duties and responsibilities, emphasize your accomplishments, quantifying the impact you've made in previous roles. Strong Summary: In the professional summary section, briefly outline your key strengths, and transferable skills. Be concise and purposeful in conveying the applicability of your skill set to the role. Showcase Versatility: Illustrate how you've successfully applied your skills in various contexts.

Begin by contacting your network of colleagues and business associates. Inform them about your present circumstances and that you are looking for fresh prospects. Don't be afraid to seek their assistance for job opportunities, references, or guidance. Participating in professional groups, whether online or offline, is another successful method to broaden your network. Take part actively in conversations and gatherings hosted by these organizations. Revise your social media profile to show your current situation and professional objectives. Engage with individuals in the industries that pique your interest and interact with the content they share. Demonstrate your expertise by sharing your personal insights and experiences.

Volunteering is a great way to gain experience or exposure with/to an industry, skill, or responsibility that your paid opportunities don't currently allow for. You can test the boundaries of your strengths, "taste test" a role you have interest in but not sure about, take on roles that add weight and responsibility through team leadership and project management, and get exposure to different working environments (and personalities) without risk to your paycheck if it doesn't work out. Volunteering is also a great way to give back by tapping into your professional strengths within more personal settings.

Define the "through line" in all that you enjoy with your work. When I realized every role I took or held interest in had the through line of helping people, I was able to identify career growth opportunities that built on that desire to serve others. That allowed for a more strategic and tailored approach in not just positions I applied for but in education and training. I could then outline my requirements for the job or knowledge growth to be worth my time and effort. The results included increased satisfaction for me and better performance from me.
