A parent undermines your authority in front of students. How do you regain control of the classroom dynamic?

Amazing scenario and I have had a few of these events occur! There are short- and long-term strategies happening here. First, stay calm in front of students and the parent if they are physically there. If they are on the phone with you, also stay calm because what they have to say is important. Then acknowledge their statement without sounding dismissive. Offer a mutual time to meet privately. The long-term strategy is to not comment about the event in front of the class after it has happened. In fact, explain to students that self-advocating is a useful skill. Students will remember your professional behavior and that is hopefully what they will tell their parents when they get home.

It is very important to remain calm if a parent gets angry in front of students. Acknowledge the parents concern empathetically stating that you see that the matter is really important to him/her. State calmly that you remain invested in building strong partnerships with all students & parents & as such would much rather have a discussion at a time & setting when you are both able to examine and discuss the situation with a view to resolving it. Offer the parent the opportunity to book an in-person conference online or using the schoolwide approach. Remain calm say nothing if doing so will escalate the parent's anger. Call for help.

Maintain composure and approach the parent after class. Briefly explain the learning environment's importance and how disruptions can affect it. Emphasize collaboration for the student's success. Thank them for their interest and suggest a separate meeting to discuss their concerns in detail.

It is imperative for a teacher to build a rapport in the class and play a pivotal role in generating motivation. When students trust their teacher, they are motivated to take risks, accept challenges and their involvement and engagement increases. Similarly involving parents as partners in their child's education by keeping them informed at all the times, seeking out their support, and empathizing with the challenges in nurturing a growing child, provides a firm foundation to the community of school, parent and student relationship, and benefits the ultimate educational goal.

In my experience, building relationships with families is where teachers need to start to prevent "undermining authority." This means that instead of focusing on "authority," I focus on serving my students and their families. This begins as late as parent teacher night where I make it clear that I'm there to help them and their children succeed. I listen to hear their concerns and discover their strengths. This includes student interests and talents and the aspirations they and their families have for them. When students and their families know that I'm in their corner, then my "authority" isn't going to be undermined by one incident. Students will see the disrespect and know that it wasn't right.

Letting a parent walk into your classroom challenge your authority, most of the time, is possible when you as a teacher have developed enough trust with your students that they do not see you as authority figure. They rather see you as their coach or a mentor who guides them in their learning journey on day to day basis. If a parent has walked in there aggressive, your students are capable enough to deal with them, let alone being afraid of seeing their teacher to be humilated.
