Two coachees clash over work styles. How can you bridge the gap and find common ground?

Understanding each coachee's work style is essential. One might be analytical and structured, while the other thrives on intuition and flexibility. It's important to acknowledge these differences without judgment and emphasize the value in both approaches. By encouraging them to share their perspectives, they can gain a deeper appreciation for each other's methods, which is key to finding common ground and fostering effective collaboration.

I apply the "And what else?" question 3 times to ensure open communication. I know it's hard. We all have the "advice monster" that closes this communication stream. At this stage, we must be more "coaches" than mentors or advisors to get deep into the source of the problem. And advises, closes it.

This is a common dilemma so long as there are people. In high performing teams, the differences in styles is what helps create additional value. So, rather than try to make everyone the same, both allow for and encourage the leveraging of differences to enable more creativity, more opportunity and more unity. Recognising and respecting each other's differences is as important as recognising and celebrating each other's similarities. After all, your legs can't functionas effectivley without your feet and vice versa. When everyone works together is when the magic happens.

Several models may be used to pursue common ground. SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats), GROW MODEL (goal, reality, options, and way forward), and mind mapping between others. I'd like to ensure both parties participate, but I wouldn't pressure them to obtain results in the first session.

Creating compromises is key to bridging gaps between conflicting work styles. It’s not about one party conceding entirely but finding a middle ground where both can agree. This might involve adjusting timelines, redistributing responsibilities, or alternating decision-making roles. Effective compromises should be fair, respect each coachee’s work style, and align with the team’s best interests, ensuring a balanced approach that serves everyone’s needs.
