As a leader I see my success as being dependent on those around, behind, and in front of me. I’m only one person, I can’t do it all and I can’t know it all. But is this how I show up as a leader? Am I teachable? Am I accountable? Or am I bossy, derivative, and aloof? A mentor taught me to ‘preach what I practice’, if I can’t back up my words with outwardly observed actions I’m failing in my leadership roles. I believe the cornerstone of culture and values is always centered in my actions, not my words.

If you are below market with salary or benefits, is there an area you can strategize to begin walking closer to the market? Finances are always on the mind of non-profit leaders. When we ensure we are taking care of our employees, they take care of the people we are serving.

We can't have them feeling like cogs in a machine. We gotta give them room to grow, to use those awesome talents they bring to the table.

A challenge that many organizations have is spreading staff too thin. For example, let's say you hire a graphics designer. But then you have events so you ask this employee to help plan the event (after all, they're creative, right?) Next, your web developer quits so you ask your graphics designer to double as your web developer. Then, you get a new grant, and you need someone to write impact reports, so you assign this task to your graphics designer. Now you have an employee who is a graphics designer, event planner, web developer, technical writer. Next, that person quits. Hire people for a specific purpose and resist the urge to give them completely different jobs.

For young people today there is a prevalent attitude of ‘doom and gloom’, and why not if you constantly find yourself in no-growth scenarios? All my managers have been “boomers”, but my experience is that they encourage my professional growth. They weren’t afraid of losing me or of me underperforming due to distractions. They recognized that I was an investment and made the decision to invest. Even when I have moved on to other opportunities I continue to make a point of ‘paying it back’ because of what was freely given to me and I still root for those organizations to win.

Anytime I’ve looked out to see if I might want to work at a non-profit my first thought is ‘are they living their mission’? In my opinion my generation was so saturated with branding that leaders in my cohort don’t really even look at it. I want to know your reputation, and I’m going to ask around to find out. If it’s all flash and no substance…I’m out. Branding is easy, reputation is hard. But when the ‘audio matches the video’ you will attract top talent because people want to make impact, that is why they want to serve in your mission. Own your shortcomings when they happen and work to repair them. Integrity is the cornerstone of success.

I tasked my team with analyzing job listings on platforms like Indeed and LinkedIn to identify the skills required for their prospective roles and pinpoint areas where they lacked proficiency. Subsequently, we devised a plan to acquire those skills, regardless of whether I was the optimal instructor. This proactive approach fosters the individuals' growth and establishes a mutually beneficial relationship, leading to heightened job satisfaction.

Start by prioritize clear communication of your mission and competitive compensation packages. Hear out their heart and understand the need and either fulfill it if it is logical or else , if it is not too logical, then, make them feel important and let them recall why they joined in.
