If team members lack motivation to achieve project goals, I focus on understanding the root causes, providing support and resources as needed, setting clear and achievable objectives, and recognizing and rewarding progress and achievements. Additionally, I encourage open communication, actively listen to team members' concerns, and offer opportunities for growth and development to reignite motivation and engagement.

Lack of motivation in a team member will have one or more root factors behind: - Lack of clarity of the goal - Lack of clarity of the role - Lack of required skills & experience - Lack of direction & guidance - Lack of action Its important that as a Leader, one needs to ensure each and every team member has got clarity of the goal, most importantly its impact on users/customers once completed. Followed by ensuring unambiguous role/responsibility for each so that there is healthy collaboration. It needs to be supplemented by right training, direction and guidance ongoing basis. Last but not the least my favourite and often undermined, - "ACTION". Remember Action brings Motivation, so get team into Action as as soon as logically possible.

Communicate these goals transparently, highlighting their significance and how they contribute to the project's success. By establishing clear goals, you provide a roadmap for your team, instill a sense of purpose, and inspire them to channel their efforts towards achieving tangible outcomes.

I sometimes see important timelines get missed while less important items are completed on time. If project goals are not prioritized properly, you end up with the quick/easy things done first, followed by the things other people are yelling loudest for, with the hardest (and often most important) items done last. Helping the team understand the difference between what can wait, what should be done now, and what must be done now, then giving them the power to push back on the lower priority items, results in more effectively hitting targets.

Make the goals outcome (impact) focused than task focused. Create a clear roadmap that articulates how the goals add up to the overall organization vision. This helps the team to clearly understand how & what would their work impact.

Collaboratively set clear and SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals with your team members to provide clear direction and motivation. Break down larger project goals into smaller, achievable milestones to create a sense of progress and accomplishment.

The SMART criteria not only provide a clear roadmap for team members but also facilitate better communication and alignment within the team. By making expectations clear and measurable, it significantly reduces ambiguity, which is often a major source of frustration and demotivation in projects. This approach ensures that each team member can see how their contributions directly impact the project's success, fostering a sense of ownership and accountability. 🤝 When team motivation falters, fostering engagement is key to reigniting their passion for project goals. Cultivate an inclusive environment where team members feel valued, heard, and empowered to contribute. Encourage collaboration, recognize achievements, and involve them in decision-making processes. By fostering engagement, you nurture a sense of ownership, camaraderie, and commitment towards project success, motivating your team to go above and beyond.

I would like to share an interesting experience. During project meetings or stand-ups, my senior lead and I were the ones driving the discussion, resulting in mostly one-way communication. I wasn't receiving feedback from all team members. However, in a different call with an agenda that any member could prepare a talk or pose a question. It turned out to be very engaging and more productive with the inflow of different ideas, viewpoints, and thoughts. Here, nobody hesitated to share or felt any inhibition to open up. So for any change or policy adoption to happen in the workplace, it must happen at the grassroots level or bottom up, which can make the change simplified and accepted at team, business unit, or organization level.

Get to know the team prior to the project kick off. Building a personal rapport with the team members to create a sense of being a valued part of the team. People will do more for others they connect with and like to work with.

Often IT teams tend to focus on keeping focus on their sprints and the roadmap that was set out. And when releases don't result into the desired impact, customer engagement, feedback ... it's not up to the IT team to keep on adding features. Engagement has to be found with users by any means possible, not waiting for the feature that is supposed to be a magic pill. Founders / Product owners should have enough activity in getting more users, early adopters, leads to be able to talk about engagement. IT teams should be more powerful to push POs and marketing teams to work om this part of the engagement, or else all development effort will be in vain.

If team members don’t understand the why beyond a simple “it needs to happen” then you can’t expect the best from people. Everyone needs to understand they why of their role in a business.

Offering support frequently and letting your team know you're always happy to help, even when things are going well, ensures your team is comfortable coming to you early enough to address challenges before they become real problems

Find interdependency of the team members , if any co-ordination meet, identify and support if needed to speed up. Regular keep up with team.

Take the time to give individual recognition and genuine appreciation as well as public recognition in a team setting. If the individual is in a peer group let their reporting to manager and senior management know about their valued contributions.

By putting this plan in place and executing not only will you get a broader profile of your team members, but you'll also find various ways to keep them motivated in the future and forecast potential pits allowing you to reassure them ahead of time.

Articulate the big picture perspective of the project and the "Who" - who is benefitting out of the project outcome. Projects are undertaken for enabling change and achieving strategic goals. However, very often, the Project Managers may be great at articulating the goals of the project. However, they need to articulate for whom is the project aiming to make a difference. For example, for a project aimed at implementing Process Optimization Improvements for an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, the Project Manager can articulate that the ultimate benefit of the project is that the users of the system would be able to do more in less time than before, helping them to spend more time with their families.

Fire them! Here is why, motivation is two way effort. If these employees holding critical roles in the project and have a direct impact on the successful completion of the project then FIRE them. Intentionally sabotaging the project and risking the failure of the whole team can not be rewarding by giving them second chance and trying to help them, the only possible reward in this case is for them to exit.

- Identify the Cause: Talk to individuals, and have team discussions. - Address the Issues: Manage workload, clarify goals, improve communication, and recognize achievements. - Boost Morale: Team building, positive environment, offer skill development. So, keep passion and it is contagious.

The motivation for teams to go beyond one can achieve is dealt with handling humanely as possible even in those crunch deadlines and project heatmaps. Often the members are treated as human resources and productivity and others like machines are considered. Concentrated effort to keep the human touch and relationships bring better results than pushing the team into a hot couldron to cook the best recipe. The process of top and middle management to keep their aspirations at bay while bringing the best out of them is a skill few possess and more so often you have bosses beating the juice of the sugarcane teams. That's why you see organizations have no control of teams without giving proper treatment to bring the best out of them.

Being the role model your team needs. Your attitude and actions shape the team's vibe. Stay positive, show enthusiasm, and stick to the project goals like glue. Be the one who dives in headfirst, stays strong when things get tough, and tackles challenges head-on. When your team sees you giving it your all, they'll follow suit and give their best too!
