What does success mean for you? This is a question I use every time there's a new project, whether it's a website, a big event, or a marketing campaign. You have to know what success looks like in the eyes of your customer. Is it getting a ton of signups? Selling out every week? Getting hundreds of thousands of readers every month? There are situations where your customers don't have an answer; it will be your job, as a stellar web designer, to communicate with them and walk them through the sea of possibilities. Communication is possibly the first skill you must master to reach your and your customers' goals. Keep them in the loop, update, ask A LOT OF QUESTIONS, make them part of the process. The results will be game-changing.

Before you even start you MUST: Do competitor research Understand the clients audience Ensure their brand identity is complete (this is not just visual, but written) You understand WHERE their clients are coming from (Google? Social media? Etc) You factor in content and visuals and speed of loading as absolute minimum considerations There is no point having an over complicated website with crazy functionality, if no one is going to visit the website... so making sure they understand that making the website is only 1 piece of the puzzle!!

Training, people often forget this or sometimes choose to as it creates dependency. But for me a client who knows how to use the basics of a site, be it adding emails or products or making changes to content will become your biggest promoter and will come back to you for the big things they need.
