Data engineering, in general, is not as fast changing as other fields such as web, mobile app development etc. A constructed building may go for number of renovations and make-overs but the foundation will have to be eternal and the same is applicable for databases, to a larger extend. However, the modern application architectures and tech stack demands a renewed look at the foundation hence it is very important to understand the various flavors of databases such as document DB, file DB, vector DB, graph DB, distributed DB etc... each solves a different set of problems and has its own merits and demerits. Staying updated with current trends will help data engineers decide lay the right foundation.

Crawl the web in a constant base. There isn't any DB knowledge potion (unfortunately), that you'll consume and live happily :) In my experience, the best thing is to go after important tools updates (e.g. TechX rolled out version x.y which provides z) or up-to-date advanced courses if you are interested into sharpening your skills even further. Once you do that, the last and most important step is to apply them. No matter how much you read, if you do not apply them you'll eventually forget them or miss important parts. So, 1. Expand Your Knowledge, 2. Apply What You've Learned in your projects, 3. Validate Your Changes, 4. Iterate and Improve. p.s. do not ship such changes to production before completing step 3!

Wer viel automatisieren möchte, sollte sich auch Python anschauen, da Python, in Verbindung mit den vielen einzelnen Modulen, viele Aufgaben der Datenmanipulation (Konvertierung etc.) sehr sicher übernimmt. Aber auch bei den Tools kommt es meines Erachtens immer auf den Einsatzzweck und der sich daraus ergebenden Ansprüche auf Performance, oder Anpassbarkeit der Skripte, an.

Understand the underneath indexing structures and data storage patterns for your database. Some databases use structures such as btrees some use lsm trees and some hashmap. Knowing the data pattern and choosing accordingly will help. Look at the memory pool, query caches of database and make sure they are at optimal level.

Database performance optimization can be approach in a number of manners, here's a category of approaches (not an exhaustive list): 1. Optimize the Query: -Utilize advanced SQL techniques and regularly analyze query execution plans to identify and address inefficiencies. - Implement appropriate indexes to reduce lookup times and enhance query performance. 2. Optimize at the Index: - Managing cardinality and designing indexes aligned with query patterns to improve data retrieval speeds. 3. Optimize the Design and Config - Partition logic and storage, columnar data etc can enhance data locality and minimize disk I/O. - Implement efficient concurrency control mechanisms to maximize throughput and minimize contention, etc.

Some developers may have thought of doing query like looping like programming coding. You can do that with cursor. However, SQL is optimized for getting data in bulk, not iterating row by row. Instead of using cursor, try using Common Table Expression (CTE), Row_Number, Subquery (in Table, not in Select!). If you are using MySQL, use the latest version 8, because it has all features I have mentioned above. Do not use cursor, unless it is something you cannot do without. It may all seems daunting, but soon you may learn that 1 second query is barely acceptable.

Data security is most challenging and complex topic. Securing data with two-factor authentication is not option for any digital business. The password are not irrelevant. As data scientist we should focus on encryption and other relevant techniques to secure the intrinsic data.

A DBA should always take Proactive measures to secure the DBs. He /she may opt for speacialized monitoring tools that have threat detection and user profiling features that make it easy to report vulnerabilities and non compliances. Few tools coming to my mind are IBM guardium, Imperva SecureSphere etc.

A big challenge is to shake the idea of monolithic databases as a good thing - they are fine if you need to generate reports that cross multiple business boundaries and want to drill down to the lowest possible levels, but that's not really a common thing. More often than not, different applications will be better served with small databases tuned for their needs, that can be quickly changed and iterated to better serve the business changing needs without cross-application or cross-business dependencies that can limit release cadence.

Even if you specialize in a database, be sure to learn how to run and manage it on different infrastructures. This way, you get different perspectives and experiences and can easily meet different situations when you need.

The first challenge is to understand the databases we build and keep serve a purpose: they exist to keep data our users generate and need to do their activities through the applications they build and use. This is key - you serve the applications, not the data. Your job is to ensure the applications have timely access to current and correct information, in a way it's convenient to access.

That one single silver bullet that still works for me is learning internal architecture on any database management system. Sometimes if you can get hands on the codebase of such a system, try to make notes of the critical component.
