Upon discovering a cybersecurity failure, my immediate response is to contain the incident, such as disconnecting affected systems or disabling compromised accounts. I gather all available information, including logs, access records, and security alerts, and document everything meticulously. This thorough documentation is crucial for later analysis. Acting swiftly and decisively helps minimize the impact of the incident, ensuring a more controlled and effective response.

Having a strong Incident Response Plan that includes IR Playbooks (documented processes for responding to common cyber incidents) is one of the best ways to help you handle anything a cyber attacker can throw at you without having to scramble to figure out what's going on during what might be the worst day the business has had. The first step once an incident (minor or major) has been identified should be to triage the situation - i.e. form a hypothesis and use the OODA loop to test that hypothesis. Having a proven process to identify what's happening, then leveraging a Playbook to help you Contain, Eradicate, Respond, and Recover, are invaluable tools to getting back to normal as quickly as possible.

Gather all relevant data and logs to understand the scope of the failure. Identify the affected systems and the extent of the damage. Analyze the root cause to prevent future incidents. Communicate findings clearly to stakeholders and outline steps for remediation and improvement.

Right after a cybersecurity incident, it's important to ramp up real-time monitoring across your network. Start using advanced threat detection tools that look for unusual behavior and system operations. This helps catch any ongoing malicious activity or secondary attacks that might be happening. Make sure everyone knows how to quickly report any new threats, so they can be dealt with right away. This proactive monitoring not only helps prevent further damage but also ensures your network stays secure as you work on recovery.

Be sure to include individuals from all over the organization (not just you!) and document this Lessons Learned meeting. Update policies and procedures accordingly. Create Action Plans with owners and deadlines for making improvements, lest things get written down and then forgotten until next time.

These meetings must consist of security executives and the teams responsible for responding to and mitigating the incident--SOC teams, forensic teams, etc. Information that should be discussed should include: - Who is responsible? - What systems were accessed and how? - What did they do? - What did they compromise? - What were their goals/motivations? Did they accomplish them? - How quickly did the various teams respond? - How quickly was the threat mitigated since detection? - What types of malware did they use? - How can we prevent this kind of attack in the future?

Was it due to human error, outdated software, misconfigurations, or other factors? Understanding these root causes is essential for implementing targeted improvements.

While initial response is critical, the lessons learned become more imperative to prevent future cybersecurity failures. Create a video or PDF of the 'Lessons Learned, How You Contained It,' and share it internally with all your employees, from the C-Suite executives to your office boys. So that next time any incident happens, your employees know what they have to do contain the incident.
